cocktails and came across this Hurricane Cocktail not sure if I'd order one, has anyone tried one maybe if someone else ordered one I might have a taste. . The Hurricane Cocktail has an interesting history --- The creation of thepassion fruit–colored relative of thedaiquiriis credited to New Orleans tavern ownerPat O'Brien.[3]The bar allegedly started as aspeakeasycalled Mr. O'Brien's Club Tipperary and the password was "storm's brewin'".[3]In the 1940s, he needed to create a new drink to help him get rid of all of the less-popular rum that local distributors forced him to buy before he could get a few cases of more popular liquors such as scotch and other whiskeys.[4][5] He poured the concoction into hurricane lamp–shaped glasses and gave it away to sailors. The drink caught on, and it has been a mainstay in the French Quarter ever since..I read that it is legal in New Orleans to walk along the streets while drinking alcohol as long as it's in a plastic cup.
-
Seachange73

When I worked and lived in New Orleans many moons ago, yes it was legal to drink alcohol provided they were in plastic cups. Saves people from glassing each other and littering the streets with broken bottles as most nights the street would be full of drunk people. Well, at the French quarter anyway. It's exciting at first, the bayou heat, syncopated music from every corner and alcohol filled euphoria from tourists and locals alike. But the novelty wears off for the locals as the nocturnal shenanigans kept the locals awake and makes for an awful start to work the next day. Tourists couldn't care less as they don't have to bust their chops at work early nthe Next day. 😕😤😣

11.28 here in Perth so 1.28 for most of you and there is only a couple of posts gone up in Hot Topics, just a quiet day or is everyone a bit gun shy about posting these days ?Seems like freedom of expression is a dying art.I was watching an old Q&A, September 17 2018, towards the end David Marr was proposing a link between blocking on social media and the new activists tool of de-platforming.Interesting since de-platforming is pretty rife on here. What say you?

After a quick google it seems like a word invented by people who want to say hateful things complaining about not being able to say hateful things unopposed.First point is these are private companies they can make whatever guidelines they want, if you don,t like it don't use their platform.Second please find me an example of a positive, inclusive loving opinion that has been de-platformed.And how do you think de-platforming is happening here? I don,t see it.

Is shouting people down so they can't be heard, so, loud hailers at lectures or talks, pressing the fire alarm, orchestrating campaigns to get previously invited guest speakers uninvited.etc so people who's opinion differs from yours can't be heard.Recent example, The Red Pill documentary, Germaine Greer. It's probably a bit strong a term to use here, but I'm sure you can see where I'm coming from. I don’t think the men’s movement is/was about opposition, particularly in the USA where men face a draconian family court situation. It’s just about representation. But unfortunately it is divisive. We keep being told we have to communicate more and not bottle it up but when we do we’re told to shut up. Have you watched the Red Pill ? It’s nothing like the bogeyman it was made out to be. I suspect very few people who opposed it have actually seen it. But that’s another issue.

How refreshing to see our horizons broadening with the performances by Kristy Sellars, this season's winner on AGT. Kristy Sellars is a pole dancer with a major difference that gives real appreciation for the strength and artistry involved. Funny how many people think pole dancing has to be sleazy but it's getting to be a real thing for workouts now and the results can be amazing. I've seen a complete turn around by young women who went from bbw to toned and fit, their mental health improved. Good stuff. Maybe Foxy will get her in for us to appreciate. Peachy

If people consistently shoot the regular posters, they will find other outlets. Those doing the shooting don't realise the regulars keep the forums active and turning over. Thus generating conversations and new topics. The shooters have their own form of grandstanding going on, the short sightedness killing the forums in their search for their patch of Pleasantville as their personalities struggle with life online. My take on it anyway.

following my daughter just shared to me it is just so heartbreaking I am in in tears to see such cruelty. Humans can be so fucking cruel!! EXPOSED: Mass slaughter in Australian horse racing..Animals Australia -- Oct 24, 2019..you tube ---------------------- EXPOSED: Horse racing = cruelty and mass slaughter. The dark side of the horse racing industry has been exposed on ABC's 7.30 program. It was the culmination of a gruelling two-year-long investigation — that gathered damning evidence of the mass slaughter of racehorses who are deemed no longer 'useful'. Lashed, kicked, stomped, killed. The final harrowing moments of racehorses is now exposed for the world to see.

Madeleine West: 'Why I can't bring myself to attend the Melbourne Cup'.. 2 days ago --- ninemsn --- 9Honey---------------------------------------------- OPINION -- It's the race that stops a nation, and has done so for 158 years now. The Melbourne Cup is essentially a collective noun for fun, with its attendant sea of suits, flotilla of frocks and fascination of fascinators steadily growing every year. ..Fun fact: Recent studies indicate horses can tell the difference between happy and angry human emotion, and act accordingly when faced with them...Psychologists at Sussex University, who last year compiled a dictionary of the facial expressions that might indicate emotions in a horse, report they have flipped their focus and can confirmed the equine capacity to read a human face..Researchers showed 28 horses photographs of angry faces, and observed both rising heart rates and an increase in stress-related behaviours. The horses also tended to turn to look at the pictures with their left eye, a common behaviour in many animals when confronted with a stressful situation..This is the first documented study demonstrating that facial expressions have a direct effect on heart rate across the species barrier — the horses were able to recognise a perceived threat from just a photograph of an angry person, with no other stimuli, something researchers haven't observed in any other animal. Revolutionary!..The emotional intelligence of horses is well documented. Equine Assisted Therapy has been popular for years, with participants claiming the big, warmblooded animals help them slow down, relax and combat stress..."It should be of no great surprise that horses are the first animal to definitively recognize human facial expressions...Horses have been domesticated since 3500 B.C., and so it seems logical the animals would have evolved an "ancestral ability for reading emotional cues and reading faces. "..Horses figure prominently in the iconography, sacral imagery, popular literature and imagination of some of the most pivotal moments in the evolution of mankind: the Trojan horse, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the light horsemen, the painted horses and horse gods of indigenous America. Phar Lap..The cinematic homage to the first female to take the Cup, Michelle Payne, Ride Like a Girl. Brumbies epitomise unbridled (no pun intended) freedom. The Man from Snowy River. Simpson's Pony is a fitting parable for notions of utter and ultimate devotion. The 'clothes horse' symbolises domestic servitude and the empty aesthetic of the fashion eclat and all their requisite show ponies (the puns would be funny were the subject not so dire...) ...They have carried us into war, to liberation, entertained our children, ploughed our fields, been our soul companions, broken their backs under our whip, and now it is revealed (something anyone who has spent much time with a horse will attest to and has long suspected) they can intuit our emotions..."The racehorse's lot is not an easy one. They are feted and admired, but the physical cost is exponential...One snapped fetlock will end a career, and we have all seen footage of a maimed horse on the track being dispatched when a broken leg dictates that proud head will never raise to its full hand height again...I am the first to admire how the pomp and pageantry of a racing festival can translate into a healthy boost to the economy of wherever it lands, promoting businesses from hospitality to architects to milliners, creating new networks and new communities, and offering a whole lot of frocked-up frivolity...As lopsided as the equation appears , there was always some small degree of succour knowing that despite the trials and tribulations our equine friends suffer for our reflected glory, cash and pleasure, they were guaranteed a luxurious retirement grazing picturesque pastures and doing what nature intended.....Which is why the recent revelation of the brutal slaughter of retired racehorses cuts so deep. It slices to the very core of mankind, for these are mankind's closest true companions, and forces us to question the very nature of what we call 'humanity'. For me, it's not just the images, but the screams of those magnificent animals, smelling blood, sensing fear, that I can little comprehend let alone forget... or forgive...We can gain some relief from assertions that this is an isolated incident but, as human nature has demonstrated time and again, where there is evidence of rot, you can be sure there is a whole lot more spreading beneath the surface...This is not to demonise an entire industry nor, for that matter, an entire culture. But this IS a call not to turn a blind eye and allow those with the most to lose in thoroughly investigating this horror to lull the community with platitudes...Hush-a-bye, don't you cry Go to sleep, my little baby When you wake, you shall have All the pretty little horses Dapples and grays, pintos and bays All the pretty little horses!..Even having Nick Cave croon the words doesn't make them any more palatable. Transparency is all I ask, and all that's needed...So, I won't be attending the carnival this year. Each to their own, and we are all responsible wholly and solely for our own actions, but I for one would struggle to enjoy the haute couture glamour, the largesse, the sheer expense necessary to create a luxe carnival atmosphere replete with designer frocks, hats, drinks and canapés...Not when the penultimate reason those beautiful animals were slaughtered, the champions of the sport of kings dying an undignified death in pain and bloodied terror, was to save money. I sense that reality might spoil my appetite...Hard to choke down even a sip of bubbly when your heart is in your throat — particularly when you consider the Latin root of the word equestrian is equi-, meaning 'equal'.

I'm getting pre-Christmas jitters and need to open a bar tab please if that's ok Foxy. The shopping in the lead up is a nightmare! Every year we go through the same thing where we agree not to spend too much and then all these delicious treats present themselves for the enjoying during the Chrissie break. But the time to look at books, the stores to visit and the storing of the food. Not forgetting the $ involved. That's without going into details. And it's not till the end of next month with more than a week to go of this one. Sigh... Anyway, I don't suppose a bar tab will help all that much but at least I'll be somewhat insensate for most of it? Peachy, cheers

Why single out race horses? How many dogs and cats etc are abandoned and put down? Far more than racehorses. It's a human trait that needs to be looked at, not just 1 industry because the rich are involved. Pro rata, more animal misery is way outside the racing industry but maybe that's acceptable to people that can't afford to be in the racing industry. Any animal misery/neglect is not acceptable, but look at the big picture.

I happen to love horses and have owned quite a few. But it interests me that we as humans prioritise some animals more than others. For example pigs. They are just as intelligent as a dog, possibly more so, and have huge personalities but its socially acceptable (for the most part) to eat them and mass slaughter them (and other animals) but not a horse? Even I have that bias, but I still think it's weird. I'm not a vegan BTW, but I rarely eat meat these days.
