"What Uber Drivers Really Make (According To Their Pay Stubs)." Johana Bhuiyan BuzzFeed 20NOV14. There is a wealth of info available, and much to consider. The articles I have identified are simply examples. It appears one of the biggest differences between the Taxi industry operators and Uber is that the local Taxi industry operators contribute more in taxation revenue to State and Federal Government authorities, and are better held to account by various legislative measures. Taxi operators are required to charge and collect GST on every transaction (ie the $75000 income threshold/trigger does not apply). I do not know whether all Uber drivers genuinely declare their income for taxation purposes as required. The significance of taxation in all of this is self evident (isn't it?!) If Government expenditures are fixed (in legislation and/or actually growing) whilst revenues decline (due to tax avoidance planning, tax evasion, or even simply dwindling numbers of employed workers)... It appears to me that both taxi drivers and Uber drivers put in long hours for relatively small actual net returns. Taxi drivers are better protected from exploitation by industrial relations/labour laws. Media reports from various locations suggest dissent by Uber drivers in respect of industrial relations (contract vs employee status) matters, and remuneration levels. In light of the broader implications, I've got to acknowledge Uber's shake up of the Taxi industry is a good thing, but I'm not convinced at all that Uber is the positive force it would like us to believe.

I agree in part with what she says but she doesn't appear to have a deeper knowledge about Uber, glosses over it, there's no facts to support what she's saying. Does she realize Uber drivers would, I'm most cases, be below the tax free threshold? I can't see how tax is relevant when they don't earn enough to pay it anyway. And her suggestion that Uber drivers hide their income, don't declare it?? Like to know where she got that informion. It sounds like she did no research, just gave a general uneducated opinion. Uber pay, if you are an owner driver, is done automatically, they work out from your time and kilometers, area etc., how much to pay, the money is then direct deposited. How does she think that could happen without coming into the view of the tax department? No cash changes hands, ever. Just a bit of an empty comment IMO And she talks about charging GST again, that is something everyone is required to do, as a registered business, but you only register as a business over certain earnings? Shit, my little brain is hurting talking about this stuff. Let's go back to sex and sausages 😛 I didn't have a sausage tonight, 2nd one disappeared during a midnight snack attack last night 😉

Did you read the articles I referenced? (Your post suggests you did not). They are very clear. Neither purport to be all-encompassing, nor I do not hold them up to be. I did not quote from these articles. The second article pertains to US Uber drivers (and was written in direct response to claims by Uber's New York General Manager). However, you will note from the first article I cited, the same business model is applied across the globe. Uber drivers are engaged in a contract capacity. Uber does not withhold and forward drivers' tax contributions to the ATO. As is the case with all contractors and business entities (and even employees with additional income sources), it is the responsibility of ABN/ACN holders (in this case, the Uber drivers) to declare their income, withhold and remit PAYE tax to the ATO. A business entity is normally required to register for, collect and remit GST if their income exceeds $75000 (GST is additional and separate to PAYE). However, Taxi/Limo business entities are required to register for GST irrespective of income level (ie even if earning less than $75000). I said I don't know whether all Uber drivers will be truthfully declaring all of their income for taxation purposes. There has been extensive discussion of the financial/economic drain of tax evasion in many nations. (Note tax evasion is illegal, tax avoidance is not illegal).

Whoever is the governing body regarding taxi driver needs to get off there case and ensure their competiveness to keep Uber honest. I don't think that will work. The casualised driving market already has players like Lyft as well as Uber. When I was in LA most drivers did both, picking whichever had the best fares at the time, and quite openly said they switched allegiances depending on the conditions of each company. They're all just funnels to supply them with work. If Uber jacks up the price, Lyft or someone else will drop their price by a bit until the two reach parity. Uber and Lyft can be considered straight up commodities, with the same drivers on both platforms, and the only differentiation for the bulk of people will be price. (But always check the pricing, the surge pricing is a killer, I priced up one Uber out of the city on a super busy night during Christmas party season, 350 for what is maybe a 100 taxi)

Hence, I am curious to know how much would it cost if I was to get there in an Uber? Would it be cheaper? Similar cost? Or more expensive with Uber? 😊 you can download the app and request a quote for any journey. Uber is distance based, but they have "surge pricing" - so when it is super busy, it will cost more. When you sign up you give it credit card, and it charges the card once your journey is finished, no tipping, no need to handle money/cards. Circular Quay - Fish Markets is giving me $9-12 in UberX (regular car) at 9:37pm on Friday night. e.g. daytime trip through the city = normal cheap pricing. night time after a big concert/footie game when there is lots of demand = more expensive. With Uber you can get the cost before requesting it, so you know how much it would cost. Make sure you give 5 star ratings for normal service, Uber actually drops drivers if they go under a 4.5 (4.6 or 4.8?) star rating, which is tough because if you think 3 out of 5 is average, and 5 is amazing - well, mostly you'd rate 3 or 4 without realising how wrong/unfair the Uber ratings are to the drivers. Don't forget, drivers rate passengers too - so its in everyones best interests that unless the driver fucks up, everyone plays super nice.

On the super busy nights where they apply the surge pricing, do you still need to wait two hours for an Uber like you do for a taxi, or does the price you pay, actually pay for a service? Eg to get a ride within twenty minutes where you might wait two hours for a cab? TIA.

I view this as yet further reason not to view Uber with some scepticism, and I think it would be a mistake to aid what appears to be unethical and disingenuous business behaviours (beyond their "aggressive tax planning" (by use of shell companies in tax havens as described in articles cited earlier in this thread). In saying this, I aim to point out the outcomes you might expect by offering falsely elevated rating scores: For one thing, (obviously) Uber uses these ratings in it's marketing endeavours. Therefore by falsely elevating the rating scores (such as you suggest), passengers would aid Uber in setting unrealistic/untruthful expectations in the minds of potential other customers. For another thing, according to an article by Harry Tucker in Business Insider Australia (20MAY16), Uber's use of the star rating system is actually being used to financially manipulate their drivers. By setting such high performance score thresholds, Uber appears actually to seek to extract a further 5% commission from the fare. The intention is to transition their drivers from the old 20% commission structure to the newer25% commission structure. To furnish anything but a genuine rating (for any/all endeavours) renders the performance measure utterly useless.

I don't need to catch a cab much. So I won't bother with Uber as I can easily get a cab whenever I needed one, and the coating isn't that big a difference. On the side note, it was a busy day on the day that I caught a cab from Circula Quay to SFM, and the slow traffic around George Street due to the new road infrastructure. So it was as busy as a night after some kind of event in town, but it didn't break my bank 😜 so yeah, sticking to cab is easier for me. - Posted from rhpmobile

Once it's picked up you're booked and confirmed, you're not waiting on the street where the guy somehow doesn't notice you and drives to the 2 girls further down, or "sorry mate, off duty" then clicks it on as someone else walks up. Obviously you can't guarantee absolute availability - but when the surge is on, that's the best time for drivers to make money, so extra drivers are likely to make themselves available. Price aside, Uber is convenient for the certainty and the "to your location" service. You don't find the taxi rank, the car comes to you. It shows you on a map the cars position as it drives towards you to pick you up.

  • sweetgem

Taxi service in Sydney does come to customer too :) so one doesn't need to find a taxi rank, plus there's an app to track their position as well. So Uber business in Sydney is very competitive, unlike in Melbourne where you can't just hail a cab on the street, but must go to a taxi rank. Hence, Uber business in Melbourne is more welcomed and popular. - Posted from rhpmobile

This is what I saw.... in a room is a bed (like a staged room with just a bed) and big screen in front if it. The man is waiting for the lady (dressed), the woman enters the room (dressed) and introduce each other. Then on the big screen flashes instructions like, "undress each other". So they do right down to their underwear. Then they sit on the bed and get to know each other. Instructions are given on the screen with questions or instructions, to get to know each other...this happens over 1/2hr period. Lastly, they are asked (via screen) if they would like to see each other. They press a button thing on each side if the bed, the answers are put up on the screen. It's sort of like a big brother is watching you, blind first date undressed....type of thing. It's made here in Australia (I think?). Ms Foxy

The horror movie, The Ring, has been remade and will be released in cinemas soon. I hope it's as good as the original Japanese version 😁 it's been a very long time since I've watched a good horror movie! 💀💀 - Posted from rhpmobile

I googled 'Undressed'...looks interesting from the little I saw. I think with the questions prompting them it looks a little more interesting than that show "First Dates". Sweetgem...you can keep your horror movies! I refuse to watch any type of scary movie, I'm a wuss! :)

Today I headed to the beach. It was the first time in ages - decades, almost. My ex hated it, so we would never go. Today was lovely - high temps with a beautiful sea breeze, wonderful company, and a good book. Just what I needed.

Quoting 'Eiliethiya' I googled 'Undressed'...looks interesting from the little I saw. I think with the questions prompting them it looks a little more interesting than that show "First Dates".It almost feels clinical in parts and I have a niggling feeling that I've seen a show that was similar, or a short web series that was like this - but I can't think of what it was. Very different type of entertainment to First Dates (AU, UK, CA), Dinner Date, Naked Attraction or any of those. I like it, and I wanted to see/hear how they responded to everything - but it was nothing like the investment you get with First Dates. It felt quite detached. What's with all the sock wearing? (and some of those pairs could not have been more of a cliche if they'd used paid actors) I got irked hearing "social experiment" over and over - blame it's overuse on Married at First Sight for that (AU, US, haven't watched the NL version) Foxxy: it is an Aussie remake of an Italian show Peachy: it is free to stream on SBS ondemand website/app

Their system somehow refuses to accept my reports, and declarations, that my parent is still living at home and under my care on 24/7 basis! So, they have just sent me a letter to say that I am on my own now (as of 17 Jan) and they won't care to help me out anymore, simply because their system says that I am no longer caring for my parent! I don't know how am I suppose to react to this piece of advice from the Almighty government! I feel like my dignity has been walked over and crushed to pieces! 😢😢 a very well begin into 2017 for me! 😳😳 - Posted from rhpmobile

I have never ever dealt with our mighty government departments/agencies over the phone or online, except to read their correspondence. So as usual, I went into one of CL's branches, on separate occasions, to make the reports and declarations. Every staff of theirs, whom had seen me on my visits, had all assured me that they have noted my reports and statutory declarations in their system! But still, the same shit keeps on happening every 2-3 months! So yes, this is not the first that CL did this to me, and not the first time that I must go in person to deal with them and get looked down like as if I was never a tax payer in my whole time since I arrived in this country! 😢😢 I do not wish to disclose too much details about my circumstances (as it is my privacy and respect for my parent), but for those who have met me and/or know of my circumstances, will know what challenges I am currently facing and that for me to return to the workforce now, to regain my financial freedom, isn't the best option for my parent's interest! Therefore, I need the help and I don't ask for much! Just the basic assistance so that I can focus on giving the most precious person of my life the best care I can give! 😢 Thanks to CL, this is really insulting and dignity crushing! 👎🏼😡 - Posted from rhpmobile

Hound them, meaning ring them every day and ask for confirmation emails. I met this lady once who told me a parent had passed away, and numerous attempts to cancel the pension and have the said parent's record updated to 'deceased', failed time and again. Pension cheques continued to be sent?? (going back a few years here but nothing has changed with how useless the system is) which was also upsetting for the family. Actually last I heard they were on a world cruise 😀😉 Now we know where our taxes go 😉 The um cruise bit was just a joke 😊

Brace yourself. Our wonderful government departments have this motto "why do our job smoothly and efficiently and save the customer unnecessary angst/grey hairs/therapy, when we can completely fuck with their heads causing extreme stress over a long period of time" 💃

Sweetgem, like b_o_b said...try going in person. It's a hassle, but may make the process go faster, and get things sorted for you. I know from previous personal experience, no 2 centrelink staff will give you the same answer! At least in person they have to deal with you. Over the phone, they keep you on hold or keep transfering you to different departments if it's "too hard" for them. I have a friend who works in one of their call centres...oh, the stories I've heard! lol
