When you install FB on your phone, it reads all the contacts from your list, and keeps all of the numbers. So imagine I give you my mobile number which you dutifully enter into contacts against my username. FB notices that and stores my number against your profile. When I log into FB, it is going to look for anyone that has my mobile number in their contact list, and find you. FB will assume we know each other and suggest we be friends. They have not disclosed your mobile number to me or vice-versa. They have just made the assumption that you already have my number, so I probably know you. If I didn't enter your number into my phone, or don't install FB, or don't allow it access to my contacts, then it won't work in reverse. Think that through, and it means that all I have to do to find out who you are is give you the mobile number I have stored in my FB profile and be charming enough that you keep it. If I don't store your number, you won't find me. Diabolical isn't it!

Not storing your own number in FB just stops you from finding people that have it. You should store it in FB, but make sure you have it set to private. It's only useful to you then. You will then be able to find people who have your number. To avoid the reverse happening, you need to block FB from accessing contacts on your phone. This prevents FB from letting the people in your contacts list know how to find you. For most people it's not an issue. But if you are collecting numbers from people and don't want to disclose your real name, then disable access to contacts on your phone pronto. Giving someone your number is safe as long as you have it marked as private in FB (which most people do). Collecting numbers is only safe if you have disabled FB access to contacts (which most people don't).
