I'm sure you could browse the ABS website to find what is officially considered to be the "average" height, weight, BMI, muscle-to-fat ration of men/women/teenages/mature-aged/caucasion/asian/spanish... But that's not really what's at issue is it?I suspect in this context the original profile holder (not the OP) was meaning something like "middle ground". There is a point at which a person looks at another and labels them as 'fat'. At the opposite end of the spectrum they look at a person and label them as 'thin'. The middle ground - where a person is neither 'fat' nor 'thin' - is (mistakenly or otherwise) called 'average'.So the OP's question, "What is average anyway?" might be interpreted as "What is your middle ground? At what point is a person neither fat nor thin, just somewhere in the middle?" You will not, the question does not ask if you are attracted to fat, thin, middle ground or anything else. The question does not ask what weights are healthy or not. The question does not ask responses to refer to specific people and their body size, shape or weight. It is asking for a stipulative definition, a personal definition which will necessarily be subjective and judgemental (but does not have to be mean, spiteful or cruel).Personally, I have no idea what I think is 'average' except that I think most people are average; I look at them and I just see people.Cheers,MS

"Dangerously skinny" is not as skinny as people think it is, and it has a lot to do with weight-to-fat ratio (a lot of professional athletes don't have a healthy weight-to-fat ratio and it interferes with things like menstrual cycles, bone density etc). In a more everyday situation, my sister's metabolism is so ramped up by breast feeding that she has to go on to diet after pregnancy to put on weight! However she is probably in the minority, and it is already common knowledge that obesity is much more prevalent than emaciation. Although I prefer a woman with a 'Curvy Kate' figure (probably what is considered by most to be 'average') I have met many, many whom I have found attractive when the person next to me said they were "too skinny". In those cases the women in question were definitely smaller/lighter/skinnier than average. Anyway. I think it's time this thread died. Cheers, MS

Average is a quick way of comparing groups but does not make much sense when you draw conclusions about individuals... Reading people's comments above there are already a few examples of where muscle mass and height are two factor that make a BMI an unreliable measure to compare your body weight to. I am 175 and about 85kg which I believe is over weight but due to weight training have a low body fat percentage. That aside tha idea that beauty and sexiness can be measured by body weight is totally absurd... Generally guys prefer women curvier than women think... Even this observation is a generalization that does not hold in every individual. The point I guess I am taking too long to get to is that every person has an idea of what they find beautiful and those ideas are as varied as there are people. I am not going to criticize this guy for desiring slim women... All power to him... But I do not agree with anyone devaluing the person they are not attracted to... Whatever the reason. I think curves are delicious and lil angelic is the perfect example of the exquisite goddess that I think epitomizes feminine sexuality... Attractiveness based on height is ludicrous, even based on purely physical appearance is misguided. If you are a person who judges people solely on such superficial grounds will end up surrounded by very superficial people... Cause and effect... I doubt that voluptuous, confident and friendly women will ever fall short of adoring admirers...

I really have no idea what the average height for a man is. Im guessing it would be around 5’10”, 5’ 11” BELOW average in height wins. ABOVE average in weight is a death sentence. Above average in weight would sound better to you, because you are well and truly above average weight. So you are well and truly doomed. You got absolutely everything wrong but kept going believing you were right none the less. You keep ignoring that your initial post was so universally offensive that you deserved every rebuke that you got. You love to make a big deal out of a figure of speach, I guess you needed to as you had no legitimate arguements to back your stance with. Where do I come? Australia. Most of Australians would call you a pencil necked wimp. When did you claim your vocabulary was good? In your third post of Jul 19 (from five posts on this thread on that one day, you really need a life don't you?) you wrote, " I keep my vocabulary low key." That suggests a deliberate effort on your part to keep it simple or maybe you're not even able to comprehend your own writings. Your occupations could only be considered impressive to a little boy like you. They are actually only average but then, you have no conception of the meaning of "average" so you could never see that. I'm actually starting to pity you. One last thing, no, I have never noticed the short bloke getting all the hot babes. Another example of how delusional you are.

just a question for people to think about - why is it that when someone states their personal opinon (no matter how obnxoiously or politely) that they dont like what they consider to be larger/overweight women everyone gets upset but when the same is said about larger/overwieght men barely a peep.... That is what it is all about to me, if a woman is in proportion I don't care what size she wears or tall or short, actually I lie, when I think more into it, it is all in her eyes. My 2 cents for what it is worth. Michael

It seems so crazy to judge someone like this and categorise them. Most people put themselves down as average because they are being modest. What does it really mean? People put themselves into categories such as athletic and padding and all this rubish as well. It seems a little crazy to me. Everyones opinion really differs anyway so why categorise yourself right? A simple picture of a person is fine. In the end it is only in the hands of the person looking at you right? I have no idea why this is done. People shouldn't even bother really. I see women clasify themselves. My personal opinion defers in alot of situations and mainly I think they are better than how they look at themselves.

When I first came onto RHP I had "a few extra pounds" as my body type. I figured....okay, I am carrying about 2kg too much to say average or slim...2kg is 4.4 pounds, therefore a few extra pounds is the right choice! Wrong! Recently I was told I should be saying slim or athletic, but I feel about average so that is what I out on my profile. I guess either through a face to face meet or a pic is the only way to really know because we all have different ideas in what is athletic, what is slim, what is average..etc. I wish we could define the brain the same way, I find the way people think has more of an impact on whether I find them truly attractive than their exact body shape

The man is obviously an idiot as there are many beautiful women on this site, who for some reason or another believe they are average or have a little extra padding. It is upsetting to say the least, but we as a society have created a body image ideal for both men and women that is at best unrealistic and for those who take a bit to far dangerous. I have put average on my profile for the following reason and nothing else, I'm not as fit as I would like, but I am happy with how I look.
