uniquely themed bars/cafes/restaurants

August 20 2016

thought this would be interesting to find out, seeing as we are all quite a diverse cultured bunch. what are some of the most uniquely themed bars/cafes/restaurants you have been to? anywhere in the world, still around or no longer. i recall in my younger days, before the mustang bar appeared, it used to be Planes Trains & Automobiles. quite an americana themed family restaurant, you would sit in half-car booths, it was awesome, sad that it is no longer. Machines in morley, which I am yet to visit with the miss, but Koko has advised it is quite a treat and the images on their site and facebook would certainlly agree with that. also, when i finally visited europe in 2012, in sicily (in Castelmola) there is a cafe place called Bar Turrisi, which is pretty much Penis themed, very unique indeed, 3 or 4 storeys (including the rooftop where we got to enjoy the view for the evening). im sure theres otheres that will come to me, obviously cant forget places like Hard Rock Cafe/Hotel, and the Ice Bar in Amsterdam. then last night on tv, for the second time I got a glimpse of the Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas....better eat what you order there or youll get a paddle spanking from the nurses! look forward the responses, still many fun places to see and enjoy.

HatsYears ago I used to go to Tharen's in Sydney's Darlinghurst/Kings Cross area and everyone has to wear one of the many hats all over the restaurant. Its a great icebreaker and conversation starter. I think it still exists but sadly I don't live in the area anymore.

I used to enjoy the Bakehouse I think it was called in Freo, the soup served in the scooped out sourdough loaf, and that was in the 90's. Now peeps serve a dip in the same thing when they bring something to a barbie. Then close by, there was the New Edition Bookshop, where you could browse for a book and then read it over a snack. This was way before Borders got the idea! Thanks for the topic! Andy - Posted from rhpmobile

Miss Kitry's in Perth. Eclectic chairs, fabulous Americana scattered around, bed Spring light feature, and candied bacon. Mmmmmmm. In Sydney, I love Sappho's on Glebe Point Road. Cafe, bar and bookstore. It's quirky and wonderful.

The Stoned Crow, North Sydney, must have been the cider, so many women frivolously vivacious. The thing with 'The Pig. And. Whistle' was, too much of a gap between Pig and And and And and whistle Mado Mado Tara xx

Is sadly now closed but used to be in the valley. You walked through huge wooden doors surrounded by forest foliage. And it was a restaurant of curtains. They were white, not sheer but just see through enough to let light through. Every dinner party had a curtained off area. You sat on the floor which was full of cushions at low tables. And all shared plates of food. It was very intimate being cucooned in our own little area.

...in Reykjavik, all the bookstores were coffee shops too. Made sense, and I took full advantage while the snow fell gently outside. Must be a European/Winter thing..

The Swallow Bar in Maylands. Its like taking a trip back in time. Art Deco themed and there are booths like train carriage seats that you can sit in, complete with overhead luggage racks. Great small bar.In Amsterdam, the now gone Rockery. Going through the back was like walking into a cave. The only light came from small candles in rocky ledges. You sat on big cushions on the floor.

Quoting 'PatchworkGirl' Adding Reykjavik to my Nerd Girl World Tour Itinerary. Sounds fabulous. Make sure you go in winter...February was nice, the days getting longer again. The coffee is good, the wi-fi is free and on a clear day the prams will be parked outside the cafe's as the locals get out.

....the Tournament of Kings - Excalibur in Vegas if you happen to be there. Circus Circus in either Reno or on the strip are also quite a treat with great food and very live entertainment. In Melbourne, the iconic Gin Palace has a theme all of it's own.

My favourite Chinese restaurant in Perth is Uncle Billy's. When I lived in San Francisco, my friends and I would rate Chinese restaurants on the likelihood that a kung fu fight could break out there at any time. Uncle Billy's looks appropriately cinematic for this and has a great menu, too - including the surprisingly good Marmite Chicken. Perth doesn't have very many 24-hour restaurants that are not Macca's - I can count the ones I know of on one hand. U&I Cafe in Northbridge is one of these few. Great Vietnamese food and because of it's proximity to a number of Perth's strip clubs, it's a popular breakfast spot among the girls from the clubs when they end their shifts at 5 am.

But my Mum used to go to a nightclub in Brisbane when she was young. They had tables with tall poles displaying numbers. Each table had a phone on it. So if someone took your fancy, you picked up the phone and dialled their table number. Pretty novel idea - not getting a knock back face to face!

I agree! It's a pretty awesome place. I've had a few meets there and even played the space invaders and pin ball machines (up the back, near theatre). That was fun for a first meet I haven't been for about a month, but I'm sure they are still there!!! Ms Foxy

...if you like international cuisine, try Lalibella's here in Melbourne. It's genuine Ethiopian at it's very best and served completely traditional....the food rocks, the staff rocks and you'll have to break you neck to spend much over $20 for a meal that will blow you away. They also have quite an interesting drinks menu tool

a cool cafe in Northbridge called The Nuclear Cafe. It looked like a nuclear fallout shelter and served fairy bread and yellow cake. It was run by a couple of comedians. They had actors in there who at first looked like regular diners, who would suddenly begin to act strangely. There was another cool place where all the floors were an aquarium but I can't remember the name of that place. In Fremantle they had a cafe called Chatterbox where you had a phone at each table and could call randoms at other tables - think that's called Tinder now :) Overseas I love the themed dining places at Disneyworld - especially Mama Melrose's where you feel like you have walked in to a kitchen from the 1950s and the waitresses tell you off if you don't eat your greens.
