are beautiful and Airlie Beach is nice (well last time I was there, lol) There are a lot of islands out there and you can visit a few different islands I think as part of package. There used to be a 3 island cruise from memory. I don't think anywhere is cheap in Queensland, tourist $ on everything.
I used to live all over Queensland and was up in Cairns for years, love it up there too and you can go out to the reef from there, Port Douglas is beautiful as is Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands.
I always check Trip Advisor to get honest feedback about places to stay so do some research through there before you book anything.Missb4u

I have found this to be a great website for booking flights and accommodation deals.
It's a beautiful area with so much to see and do.

TQ has a website called Queensland Holidays which has some generic info on the regions which may help as a starting point. From memory, the main streets in Cairns and Townsville have businesses sprinkling daytrips to the Reef.

Hi, There many places in north qld to visit, plenty of nice places to stay that offer great deals as well, port douglas, cairns, townsville, airlie beach, yeppoon and others that you can visit the barrier reef from and offer deals on hotels and breaky meals. Let me know if you want to know some hotels as well.

Mr Luvsilver Yes Magnetic Island is nice, but I would recommend you either go south of Townsville and stay in the Airlie Beach / Whitsunday region, or go north to the Cairns region. You can access the reef from Townsville but apart from that there is not much here or in the surrounding area for tourists. It's just not a tourist city, no matter how much our 'leaders' and the local Murdoch rag try to claim that it is. Cairns, however, makes most of its living from local and international visitors and it shows, the area in general is aesthetically more pleasing (being the start of the wet tropics), and it has a lot more in its vicinity that you could also check out if you had the time and inclination - Kuranda (and the skyrail and / or train to travel there and back), the Atherton Tablelands which is a beautiful area, Port Douglas, etc.WhitsundayGuy

As LuckDragon said Cairns is more geared towards tourists. They have been struggling for a long term so you should ask about any specials once you pick a hotel.
I also agree that drives around Cairns are beautiful. You can head north to the Daintree river and visit Mossman Gorge & Port Douglas whilst the coastal road has sweeping views of the Coral Sea. The Atherton Tableland to the south is more rustic but very peaceful. There are some popular lakes around that area.

Whitsunday 1 is right. The Whitsundays is the place where you can visit the reef with the protection of the islands. You are also quite close to the reef compared to other area's.

I use to work on the GBR in a previous life. Access to the reef is not all that great, its quite some way offshore generally. You will likely need to go via a tour operator (eg Quicksilver out of Port Douglas) which will visit one of the pontoons set up for tourism/diving/snorkelling. These are OK for a novice and well supervised.
If you head north from Cairns to Port Douglas, I also recommend a visit to Mosmann Gorge, inland to the Atherton Tablelands and the Daintree world heritage area (access across the Mosmann River via car ferry!). Depending upon your adventure levels, the Tully River White Water Rafting out of Cairns, which traverses the World Heritage Area, is a must do for mine.RHP User
