lubes and urinary infections

May 12 2012

Hi all, just a quickie (lol), my wife seems to get urinary tract infections whenever we use lube or condome. Do many other women get this, if so, can you recommend any brands of lube and condoms that are safer to use?

It could be an allergic reaction. Use only water based plain lubes like KY that don't contain extras like flavourings. You can also get plain unlubricated, latex free condoms either from a pharmacy or online. Saliva is an obvious choice for an alternative lubricant. Also check to see that the lube and condoms are not out of date.If you can rule out allergies then it may be that she has a mild thrush/candida infection. The itching is minimal so you don't realise you have it but it can cause all sorts of problems with condoms and lubes making it feel like a UTI.Either way I would suggest a trip to the doctor who can get some swabs done and recommend the right treatment.

Try going to your local Woolworths. In the same isle wherein resides KY and condoms (Health Isle), you will also find a product called, SYLK. It is made from Kiwi Fruit, is all natural. Works very well for anal so should work equally well as a vaginal lube if that's your need. Is also edible, without having an overpowering taste. Also, it doesnt soak into the skin very quickly, so stays around to keep doing it's job.

Though not specifically from lube or condoms. Sex itself used to always trigger severe UTIs for me, for a long time. I discovered a very simple solution - drink lots of water generally eg be well hydrated, and always have a glass or two straight after sex. Voila, no more UTIs, no more anti-biotics, no more thrush due to anti-biotics. Yay! I also use oil as lube, preferably a high grade organic edible oil - avocado, jojoba, almond etc. I prefer natural products around my girlie bits :) Hope that helps a little x

Note that in the post above natural oils are not condom-friendly, they can cause condoms to degrade and become mostly useless, which is why all the condom leaflets say to use a water-based lubricant instead of an oil-based. Oil's great for condomless sex with a regular partner though! Or so I'm told, having always used the little rubber caps myself.   I agree with Mistress T's suggestion, try a non-latex condom. If it is an allergy in disguise, repeated exposure to the allergen can make allergic reactions worse and worse each time. One thing neither of you want is anaphlyaxis.   You could also try a silicone based lube if you've only been using water based. When I tried silicone I haven't looked back since, the stuff is wonderful. PJUR is a common brand. I have also used Swiss Navy. You could get a small bottle or sachet to try before investing in a larger container as those can be expensive.   Also make sure you wash your hands and any toys very well before they're put to use and never go from anal play to vaginal play without a sterilisation party first.   Lastly, maybe there's something your partner can do to help things along. Cranberry juice (in the long life section of the supermarket) and little capsules of cranberry extract from the chemist may help prevent UTIs. There's also an over-the-counter at a chemist product called Ural that makes urine more alkaline and therefore less likely to cause infection. I'm sure her mother taught her well, but I'm told women need to wipe "from front to back" when using toilet paper to minimise the risk of introducing nasties where they don't belong. Suggest she checks the labels on her underwear. Natural fibres - cotton, bamboo, linen, silk - are much better at breathing and don't cause as many infections. Synthetic fibres - polyester, rayon, Spandex, Lycra etc - can encourage fungal and other infections.   Wishing you happier humping!

Keep away from all the flavoured lubes as well as the silicon ones too. Pjur makes some fabulous lubes of medical grade that are well worth trying and have been made with sensitive women in mind. Try using a latex free condom as well, you can get them from your local adult store readily.

Except for the Pjur Aqua which is water-based, but we're assuming it's water-based lubes that are the problem, hence recommending something else.

The goal is to avoid stagnation post coitus n flush out the urinary tract by hydrating well. That said it should be a good habit to wash (both men n women) before, after sex...for women perhaps with a good douching solution (note over douching is not good as it reduces natural "beneficial" bacteria). Also, if you go anal, remember to change condom as quite often bacteria such as E.coli (from the gut) commonly causes UTI. That said it might seem kinda difficult after an intense love making session, but having good habits in place makes things easier especially for her. There are hypoallergenic condoms...usual durex, 5 seasons etc...but quite often the allergic reaction will occur within 1 hour...but worth trying out to eliminate the likely causes.
