going round in circles

May 26 2010

I am on my third session at the beginners course at the kayak club, it has been great fun so far but i still cant get the kayak to go in a straight line. I start off paddling ok for a while then as i get to a certain speed the boat goes uncontrolalby to the left or right, and it doesnt matter how hard i try to correct it using sweep strokes !!!!! CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE Russell

One arm is obviously stronger than the other? I suggest you practice stroking at every opportunity with your weakest hand. Apply a little lube. :p Hugs Stalky

Thanks for the laugh, babe. As a very bad rower, I have no suggestions of my own. I'm so bad that I lost the oar over my head during a race - not sure how, but teammates weren't impressed... Don't think that's why they decided to soak down my tshirt at the end of it though xxILTS

Customer69, I am shocked....... after reading the detail in your profile , which read like a small novel. Its a Kayak!! not a canoe there is a big!!! difference. Russell

It is actually ur body position, you are moving you body to much which makes the boat lean and go into a different direction, its not all about the paddling.. Try to keep your body postion central and keep you paddling even and consitant.. i hope that works..

Personally i dont take paddles when i go kayaking i prefer to let the currents and wind take me on a mystery tour.

I agree with Out4, kayaking is about your body movements as well as your arms. In fact the power comes from a combination of strength of your arms AND your body.... a tight core really helps. You would actually find it easier in a canoe as the deeper hull isn't as sensitive to your body movements. Hence, it's always better to fuck in a canoe than in a kayak or you both get VERY wet ! Would be happy to give you a lesson (in the kayaking technique) if you fly over for the Melb Drinks Night ! Good luck, anything on or in water is fun ! xx Miss Saturn

Nah ..................I think Stalkys on the right track...............................much more humorous interpretation lol happy paddling of the ...ah...kayak that is not a canoe.......altho having a thicker hull....is surely more desirable ?

Russell! I've just been on a Kayaking Forum and read a post that was posted around the same time as this, but the one on that site was going on about "A real fantasy" it's very detailed and has nothing to do with Kayaking but I think you woke a few kayakers up!! Did you post that too, and if so did you get them mixed up? TOO FUNNY!
