for all the peope who ride motorbikes, and have had the near misses

December 03 2011

and for all the car and truck drives who dont see us on the roads .. I saw you hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line. But you didn't see me put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday. I saw you pull your child closer when we passed each other on the footpath. But you didn't see me playing Santa at the local mall. I saw you change your mind about going into the restaurant. But you didn't see me attending a meeting to raise more money for the cyclone relief. I saw you roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by. But you didn't see me driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window. (and haven't we all worn a lit cigarette but at some time or other )I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your children. But you didn't see me when I took time off from work to run toys to the disadvantages children in hospital . I saw you stare at my long hair. But you didn't see me and my friends cut ten inches off for Shave for a Cure, and raise $3000 in the process for the cause. I saw you roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. But you didn't see me and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none. I saw you look in fright at my tattoos. But you didn't see me cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart. I saw you change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere. But you didn't see me going home to be with my family. I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be. But you didn't see me when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane. I saw you yelling at your kids in the car. But you didn't see me pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me. I saw you reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road. But you didn't see me squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn. I saw you race down the road in the rain. But you didn't see me get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date. I saw you run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time. But you didn't see me trying to turn right I saw you cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in. But you didn't see me leave the road. I saw you waiting impatiently for my friends to pass. But you didn't see me. I wasn't there. I saw you go home to your family. But you didn't see me. Because, I died that day you cut me off. I WAS JUST A BIKER. I AM A person with friends and a family. But you didn't see me.As we are approaching the so called Silly Season .. ( Xmas drinks, parties, mind on the next xmas present to by .. I ask .. keep an eye out for everyone on the road .... for every one has their space and has a reason for being here .. and it keeps us all safe so we can continue to play and have fun ... (Yes I ride a bike , and drive a manual car) STOP LOOK LISTEN and live to play again ...

That was amazing!! THANK YOUMy husband rides a motor bike to and from work everyday, it is his little peice of joy daily and it has it's economic benifits as well but i have my heart in my throat if my phone rings around the time he is on the road worried about the fact this could be the day i get "that call" he has had so many near misses (one on our wedding anniversay just last year) that i have had to ask him to stop telling me about them because i just get too scared.Sadly there are a few reckless riders out there that give them all a bad name and people are just so damn busy with thier own lives that they dont think about the consequces of thier actions on other people's lives. It sadens me to think how many men and women die on our roads and not just on motorbikes and it really is a preventable situation.

Watch out for the oldies still driving beyond their abilities, and likely loaded with codeine to the eyeballs. They're unpredictable at best.

Excellent post.I am also a Motorcyclist as well as a Car driver. I'm also a truck driver as well.Being in all three position, it just amazes me that majority of drivers just dont know how to drive on the road without causing ... erm... issues.Especially when pulling in front of a moving truck?... and stop suddenly? Not checking to see if there is a Cyclist/Motorcyclist before changing lanes?Be aware of everyone. Even Pedestrians

My first introduction to "bikies" was about a week after I started my first job. Driving to work and a German Shepard ran out onto the road and under my car. The dog was still alive so I sat with it for over an hour waiting for the RSPCA to turn up. About 20 minutes in these 2 bikers stopped. I have to admit I was scared and was not sure what was going to happen. They asked what had happened then they sat with me till the RSPCA arrived. One of them even canvased the area looking for the owner. When the RSPCA finally turned up, they asked the gathered crowd who was responsible for the dog, so they knew who to send the bill to. Everyone vanished except the 2 bikers. They gave their details and said that if noone claimed the dog they would pay all its bills.   The next day I applied for my bike licence.   Now if only they would change the law so you could not get your car licence until you had a bike licence, then maybe people would learn to look.

This is a great post I'm sure we have all had our near misses. Especially to and from work on a daily basis. Myself and my family have always riden bikes and we have had our share of scraps and falls. We hope all road users see us at the MRA (melbourne) toy run this sunday. My favourite charity event. When you know the bikers you realise we are generally a happy bunch. A xx

I ride bikes, drive a campervan and sometimes I drive trucks or buses for work.Bikes liberate the soul, they make a rider an integral part of the landscape rather than merely a traveller over it, and they bring me inner peace. But yes, this is the silly season, take care out there everyone, and I'll see you out there somewhere

Moment_In_Time, thanks for the fantastic post and I agree, a motorcycle license for a period of time before you could take a car license would massively increase driving awareness and therefore safety and perhaps even help reduce road congestion as some riders find driving the "Windscreen TV" a less satisfying experience. There are good, bad and irresponsible riders as well as drivers, but with less "gotta be somewhere" mindset and more "enjoyment of the journey" attitude, the road would be a better place. That's also a good attitude for life generally :)

Lord those stickers shit me ! .Any way ....... I ride ....not an enormous amount but I ride enough and have ridden long enough to know that drivers dont hear or see you..I also drive a large car. The amount of idiot riders who zoom within millimetres of me and overtake on the inside etc ....... It makes me undertand how we all get a bad name. .My bike is big , its incredably niosey , (cars now hear me .......from a long way off) I have done a number of advanced riding courses etc ....so I can be in the right place at the wrong time .... and still live ! . Good luck fellow riders ..... and remember nod your head its just freakin rude not to ! .Brae

I fitted my Trumpy with some 139dB airhorns.... so they know I am in the viscinity of their careless daydreaming and happy wandering. I think cab drivers are by far and above the worst risk to motorcyclists. they will swerve from lane 3 into lane 1 and slam their brakes on to pick up a fair. The safest place to be is in front of a cab driver.... and never.. ever.. go around them on the inside lane.Second, are 4 wheel drive vehicles.... many of whom think it is their perrogative to swerve to the left (into your driving line) so that they can turn ... you guessed it... Right....Then of course... the third most dangerous fool on the road is you. We can and do accelerate rapidly.. .too fast for the average cager to notice us.... do yourself a favour and make yourself visible or heard... and always have a planned escape route should the inevitable happen.HugsStalky

happen too frequently.... have had a few...too many really....last one was real close, clipped the rear of a 4wd kid carrier that pulled out in front of me....another, i opened an 18 inch gash in the rear quarter of a camry....with my bar-end mirror mount on the ducati... i had a gemini hit me from behind when on an old 750/4 i had, and rode home...they didnt. hit a dog another night, and took out a timber fence as a result.... wounded pride for me, twisted forks n frame for the FJ1200, but rode it home.....now I'm a bit older, i try to be a whole lot more cautious, the bikes very loud, has a bright blue HID headlight, is 400kgs of shiny black and about 3 acres of chrome....rebuilt the motor this year, so it goes better than brand new....so i really dont want to see it damaged and i dont fancy picking it up, or having it fall on me...my backs not as young as it once was.......   we are looking at a new bike for my 50th though, a Harley even...undecided as yet whether it will be the new Road King, or the Street Glide...both are beautiful bikes, two different takes on the 'touring' theme...ahh...choices lol...

I ride bikes too and have near misses all the time I don't even bother noting them anymore. I have always had bikes and bikes to me are like my feet. I've had everything from old scooters to new harleys. I've had people actually attempt to run me off the road before because it was a one lane road and the 20 clicks over we were already doing wasn't quick enough apparently, mind you that gentleman got a broken nose for his efforts. I've recently had to throw a one year old Harley into the dirt in order to avoid a T-bone collision from some asshole running a very red light. I've crashed two major times over the years and have broken my collar bone. My advice to other riders is always this: you will have an accident sooner or later and when you do the most important thing to do is decide on what your plan of action will be and stick to it. Throw the bike, collide, hit the gutter, whatever it is decide, committ, relax and go with it. Change your mind half way and you will come off worse. The road is full of idiots an that's an understatement.

A well thought out post. All road users need to be aware ALL the time. Yes I had to get my bike licence before I could get my car licence as I was too young and had to travel. Many misses, much abuse. Then as I got older and had been driving and riding for 15 years or so I took up cycling as well. You know, I dont get abused on the roads by motorcyclists, but by Jimminy Cricket, car drivers give us what for. Australia appears to be one of the few countries where car drivers feel the need to be abusive towards cyclists. Even our Kiwi neighbours are accepting of cyclists. I know this was more about motorcycles, but I think this can equally apply to cyclists. Stay safe, it's a jungle out there.   Lets

did the xmas kids toy run on sunday, from a shopping centre in ipswich to the showgrounds....we did a slow ride through the town , in a group of perhaps 500 bikes. the police had intersections closed the whole route, and the public stood on the foothpaths and in their driveways and alternately clapped, waved or cheered as we all passed........ the ride was a long one, in and out of many suburbs...........and it was a great joy to see just how well the general public took it all in, and how they shared the morning, and expressed their gratitude........ well done Lockyer Ulysses, well done Ipswich and well done Qld Police! its now going to be our annual xmas ride! Hats off to the men, women and children who took part in the ride.....thanks for being so considerate, and generous!! merry xmas all!

I have been riding bikes on and off since I was 11 years old and have never been hit or had a big fall, more luck than skill. Started out like most of us on dirt, road and for a short time tried road raceing. For the last 5 years I have been riding a Harley and changed the pipes 3 times to ensure that people hear me coming. To all the people who enjoy riding and this life style have a safe Christmas and sexy New Year.   Mr NQ
