  Really you should be making up these rules as you go... Generally speaking i find that if you are non pushy and relaxed things tend to go better. So some people adopt the "meet first play later" idea. Get phone numbers, msn contacts get to know each other, naughty conversations on the phone, naughty webcaamming...whatever you can do to make you more comfortable. Along with everyones physical attributes comes thier personalities and idiosyncrasis and sometimes you are not going to like everything about the person. So make sure before you get together and "scratch the old itch". Thats just my two cents

  You would defenitely both meet because if you looking for a MMF or FFM your partner has to be attracted to that person,and people can be attractive but they could be sleazy and thats not a turn on.So meet for coffee or a drink and it will come naturally you can always go home and think about it then get in touch.
