Your front door..

September 11 2012

When was the last time you walked somewhere you would normally have driven. Did you notice new things along the way? Feel like you were visiting a new place? All just outside your front door. Gardens, houses, parks, unusual cracks in the pavement, smells and shadows. Things you miss at 60km/h as you send that last minute important text message. It's easy to get trapped in confined spaces. In front of the television, in the auto, sitting at the PC. So lets move! Get up open your front door and stand there for 7 minutes and just soak in what you experience. Then come back and report. For me;Smells of last night's rain. Lawn mown but full of weeds. Trees across the road rustling as gray clouds drift east. Parrots and other birds clamour and screech. My rusty box trailer rests and the limestone letterbox fights to escape the rosemary threatening to drown it.Now you....

I tend to walk quite a lot coz I really don't feel the urge to put on a helmet for 2 mins so I carry a bag for those grocery items I need to carry back home.   I also walk to work about 9ks coz I'm trying to lose weight (so far 10kg) but I can't drag myself to walk home after a 10hr shift.   Yeah the smells can be pleasant but I remember when I moved down from the bush it was sooo overpowering the smell from the cars and heavy vehicles....   Mike

Whats that?   I dont drive so I do walk just about everywhere....and you get to see the most amusing things..and some inetersting things too.   On my way to work is a huge billboard, I like seeing the change in it quite regualrly and often wonder if those driving along the motorway often notice the change in it as quickly as I do (or if at all).   The same walk each day has me passing a very friendly cat at 5:45am every day. I am finding myself leaving just that little bit earlier so I can stop and chat with the cat, give it a quick scratch under its chin and continue on my way (yes Im that crazy cat lady standing outside your yard every morning lol)   Kisses Focus

I've been thinking about this and I guess I'm always in too much of a hurry to get to where I need to go, but after moving to Victoria nearly four years ago I noticed a few things about my home town when I visit there. I'm from a town with a strong Italian based community and coming up to about 6ish at night, the smell of pizza wafts through the air in the main street, blended in with the smell of espresso coffee. I love to go there when I visit just to breathe it all in.   I still get homesick from time to time.

I always go for long walks and look up.I love looking at the facades of old buildings ,often lots of fascinating detail, old painted signs ,especially in country towns. But the prize goes to Venice, nearly every door with a cat motif ,a knocker or gargoyle ,so beautiful. In Venice there is a great incentive to walk those beautiful old streets,no cars.

I walk the dog every morning,... hear see and smell the ocean , it is good for the soul ....and then I see the familiar parade of old and young , the fit , the over weight , happy , sleepy people that choose to start their day the same way. Life is good Minxy x

I've just moved to a new place and am discovering a whole new environment. I spend some time every morning and again every evening taking in the awesome views. Misty mornings are gorgeous looking towards the hills and then the evening with the lights it looks like Christmas.   The sound of the birds in the morning reminds me of a holiday long ago in Singapore when I stayed near a bird park.   I've been walking across the road and visiting the local cafe and small shops and diiscovered my new walking route has a park which has ocean views.   I've never lived near a main road before so the sound of all the heavy traffic is taking some getting used to but its starting to fade into the background.

we have a 55 kg horse, we call our dog...hahaso everyday exercise is paramount....we mostly take turns walking him...sometimes we go together, to enjoy the experience hand in hand...we have a HUGE park where we live, right by the river....it feels as if you were down South..it is a bloody big park...undeveloped and rural...oh, yeah...it's a bird sanctuary too!so for me..it's nature...the Sun on my face...the beautiful surroundings....the birds.....and we do take the occasional stroll down the shops too

...the nearest cross street is half a km away. When I go for a 'walk' there's usually a horse under me.

So walked at least 10kms. I live in the country, I just adore visiting Melbourne. The buildings, the busyness, the food, the diverse people everywhere, the interesting shops.   Was lovely, sun was shining, had urgent business to take care of, but once that was out of the way, went to Southbank and checked out the lovely shops. Lots of people down beside the Yarra today catching water taxis etc, alternative type people hanging out around Flinders Street Station - including one man who had a face covered in tattoos and piercings, loads of construction work going on, cute hardhatted men everywhere... that's what I saw today.

lurks suburbia in all its stereotypical glory. The kids playing in the street, the dickhead who lives across the road shouting at the TV, lawns being mowed, things being built in garages with power tools, my needy-as-fuck cat who has everything he needs yowling for no reason at my feet.Good thing I brought a bottle of wine out with me, this place is noisy, I probably should have put on a robe or something tho.xx Sarah

So when I exited it as per LRE's instruction I turned right and looked out of my garage door and there I saw Mt Wellington. Not a lot of Mt Wellington though because it was cloudy. I saw my neighbour opposite was at home because her car was in her garage. Unlike on sunny days, there were no little birds darting in and out of the garden. I do wonder where birds go when it rains, do you? Given the bleakness of the day and its impact on my view, I turned left and looked into my courtyard and marvelled at the beauty of the camellia tree and how beautiful the red camellias are and how the smaller flowers have a compact beauty where the more open flowers have begun to look blowsy and their colour is changing. I saw that my silverbeet hasn't grown at all since I planted it and I admired my one yellow freesia. I couldn't help but notice the dead leaves that have blown into the garage and how the garage floor needs a good sweeping. The most prevalent sound was the wind in the eaves and the rattle of one of the gutters. That was my seven minutes. When I walk to work I usually discover a house I have never seen before. Do you think houses take on cloaks of invisibility?
