Would you want to meet an alien?

I'd love to meet an alien, I'm sure there are aliens out there - probably also wondering "is there anyone else out there". I don't think it is likely to turn up anything though, but if you've got the money, why not throw it at cool moonshots (no pun intended) and see what comes out of it. If nothing else it will probably spin off a bunch of algorithms for examining signals that will be useful later on.

Alien civilisations? Not happening for me in a sexy way that I can imagine Freya and I think I've read too many sci fi stories and watched too many movies. Plus maybe had too much experience of our own 'civilisation. It's scary. Peachy :-)

Take a look at the topic "Worst message ever". These people aren't from this planet. They're from Planet Retardatron.

I'm sure we're not the only ones around - and I'd love to have the opportunity to meet a true alien. But as for the project, I don't really give it much of a chance of success - after all we've already been doing this kinda thing for many years already without any 'known' success. If you already have an inkling that we have previously been observed by aliens in their UFO's, then they already know we are here, so it's just a matter if they want to find out more about us also. We might not just be up to scratch for them at this point in time, or they might deem that we are too primitive to encounter ? Tall

...I wouldn't have anything against meeting an alien. But people paying for the privilege? I'm not so sure...it kind of feels like ET tourism or something, blown out to the nth degree. What if Yuri had spent his spare 100mill on building a hospital...I don't know, is that enough?...in some less well off part of Russia. It seems to me that the stupendously wealthy really should try to think about social responsibility. When you have enough money that you can change many peoples lives for the better here and now, shouldn't that be the responsible thing to do? Thumbs up to Bill Gates and his wife, and others like them. But it's Yuri's money to throw around...maybe it's ego, and he wants his name to live on...give him a plaque on a hospital wall somewhere.

hmm not sure if I would like to meet one or not. It would have to be one of those in the moment decisions; albeit if they travelled to Earth I may not have a choice in the matter. For me the whole 'finding intelligent life' thing can be summed up in what Hawking said: "We don't know much about aliens but we know about humans," he said. Historically, contacts between humans and less intelligent life forms, or between civilisations with different levels of technology, "have gone badly for the less advanced"."A civilisation reading one of our messages could be billions of years ahead. They will be vastly more powerful and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria." There is a good chance we won't want to be on the receiving end; I doubt it would turn out like Independence Day

Met an illegal alien and her family once, they were lovely. It took several years for them to get citizenship, but thankfully in the end it worked out for them. I wonder how they are. :-)

... what would happen if we woke up one day to discover that we have been overtaken and our very existence was at the discretion of a divided alien species. To some, our sole purpose was for exploitation as they saw fit. To the rest, we were deemed nothing more than pests - fair game for eradication, cruelty and/or torture. I wonder, if on the other side of that (say a few generations or so), what kind of an impact that experience would have on humanity on the whole and if, after their departure, we learn from it or continue as is.

We humans tend to "humanise" everything. We like considering human characteristics onto other animals... and even inanimate structures.... (like a potato with a "face").... and go "awwwwwww". And through movies, we have accepted this principle upon life from other planets. The likelihood of life existing elsewhere in the universe is, I believe.... inevitable. However.... if we apply the general principles of evolution from our own planet, to another planet, several things become very obvious: - * other life will be far older than we are.* if their planet has been subject to the kinds of climatic change as Earth, which drives evolution..... older planets will have life which is likely to be far more evolutionarily developed, than we are.& * if life from another planet (galaxy) was capable of overcoming the significant obstacles of interstellar travel, to land on our doorstep.... they're going to be way more advanced than other life forms where they came from, and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more advanced than we are. They are also highly unlikely to take on a form anything like humans..... two arms, two legs, walks upright, intelligent..... which covers all humans (except Rugby League players). In which case.... meeting them would mean we are very under-evolved, very under-prepared. Earths history tells us that when more advanced life meets less advanced life..... the lessor form is pretty much rooted. I'll take my chance with that life already on Earth, thanks. DG

the difference between species is established when members can no longer reproduce with eachother - have sex. Such as a bird and sheep cannot have sex with eachother therefore they are different species. Now, if there was life outside of our solar system (e.g. aliens) then most likely they would be a different species - having sexual intercourse with the intent of reproduction with them would be impossible for our species wouldn't it? So I don't understand the question...:)

Think you'd be hard pressed finding a human species in RHP with the intent of reproduction. Mado Mado Tara xx

So I don't understand the question...:) From my reading of the OP's question, there was no intent to actually reproduce - just merely the act of intercourse. It would have to depend, of course, on whether there was any possible likelihood of intercourse in the first place - their biology may be so completely different to ours and might not even be possible anyway ? Will time tell ? Tall

Why not meet them, as long as they didn't want to eat me or kill me. As for sex, would have two wait and see. You never know though, they may have breasts on there back ;-)

Quoting 'Freya70' My question was a little facetious..but definitely some interesting answers..maybe we need to master time travel to have the answer xxFreya I know.I tried to approach the topic from the angle appropriate for RHP - sex :) Not focused on the point reproducing but on the basics of "intercourse". If it is a different species to us how can we be confident we could "interact" on that or ANY level for that matter. I do crack up laughing at any sci-fi where aliens speak English :) :) :) Especially if these "aliens" are actually just single-cell organisms...then we can wait for the signal for a couple of millions of years :)

Want to know the truth, if we do contact them. What does the Starship Enterprise and a roll of toilet paper have in common? If they answer, "They both hang around Uranus looking for Klingon's" Well we then know they are fair dinkum and likely worth a shag.

I think attempting to contact Aliens has some serious risks. Only an intelligent life form could listen and respond to any signal we send. If this intelligent life form is similar to us, but far more advanced technologically, than we are fucked. Death Star fucked. Goku spirit bomb fucked. The list goes on. Now; if I was to come face to face with a sexy alien - if Avatar is anything to go by, than yes I would definitely have sex with it's numerous orifices.

I don't just wonder. In a lot of ways, mainly in terms of attitude and treatment towards other animals (and even ourselves), we are the equivalent of that alien species here on earth. On a bad day, when I'm ashamed to be human, I actually find myself wishing it would happen (not indefinitely, just as long as it takes), if for no other reason than to give us a taste of our medicine.
