World Gone Dead

October 24 2014

Recently having a chat to a really nice young lady today, we stumbled across the topic of how the world is so overcome with Technology these days, unlike when some of us grew up. That got me thinking, what would you do, if the world should just suddenly go dead. No phone, no power. I'd take the time to go outside and look at the stars without all the street lights affecting it.What would you do?

A book by the lake with dogs sounds awesome. What breeds do you have ? I remember chopping firewood when I was younger!! House I grew up in had an open fireplace. When I was sick I was allowed to sleep near it, fall asleep watching the flames was always one of my favorite things. Both awesome idea's!!! Oh, I've also hunted, killed and skinned rabbits on a friends farm when I was younger as well. Teaches you a few things about life.

Got the veggies and livestock a farm that's totally off the grid. Water and power wise and produce. A seventy foot boat full iff fuel and a hunter gatherer husband that can build it fix it or kill it. Plus I would be happy as can be. As a lot if my life was in places that had no power. Read when the generator was in ir Kerro lamp. I can shoot and skin an animal. I can fish and clean and scale it. I can kill a chook and pluck and cook it. I can knit and sew( the latter badly) . I hate tv and hardly watch the news. But medical wise I would be in deep shit without technology. And I used to write with an inkwell and quill I am that old! - Posted from rhpmobile

First thought was spend most time reading. No power, I'd have to go to bed at a more sensible hour and get up earlier. Keep warm there with lots of sex and cuddles. I love to cook. I got some vegies in the garden. But it could still get complicated. Fires aren't my strong point.

As I work in the power industry, I'd be out of a job (early retirement - woo hoo!!). The only thing to do is go back to nature, sleeping under the stars, skinny dipping in a fresh water creek, living off the land (which maybe 95% of people these days would not have a clue as to how to do that). Massive withdrawals by those hooked on technology (and I may even be one of them):) What an interesting question, thanks Insomnian.

looked at the stars without all the streetlights affecting it and it is absolutely beautiful !!! You can see the Milky Way !!! I avoid many things "Technological" by being a "technophobe". Apart from my laptop, I don't own a Smartphone, iPhone or iPad though on Public Transport, I sit and watch all the other people using theirs. Sometimes I start up a chat with the person next to me, if she/he looks friendly and also has nothing to do. If the world went dead, my husband and I would pack our camper and head out into the bush; away from all the people and distractions of the City.

As I work night shift (on the road) I get to see the sunset and sunrise every time I go to work, but agreed, they're so forgotten, but always so loved! SensualAries - I think it'd do the current younger generation some good actually getting out and learning even just some little things like how to chop firewood and skin rabbits. Good on you Miss Meander for adopting from the pound! I'm sure they're awesome dogs. ( saved two lives, human or otherwise, a good deed!) I work security here, so I'll always have a job as well. (maybe more so if the power went out ) Mr Fun - You could always impress the ladies with your firewood chopping skills! I'm sure that's how they used to do it in the old days, before computers and RHP. If that fails i'm sure just charming the ladies with your wit would work just as well given your many varied and clever posts. Board games used to be soo much fun, I've forgotten the last time I played a board game. Awesome news about the book, hope it keeps you enthralled like it has so many others!

Hmm but there would be panic.....just go shopping no one would be able to count what you have to pay for your food items....could you see young once today without a calculator. I am still a bit of old school and scribble a lot on paper.....my mind is full of names properties and It would work still well without a computer. On the bright side...................we would again stand outside or sit at the front of our homes and talk to people....make eye contact and talk to each other....................wow. The world would be a bit slower again.....:)

my dad teaching me to chop firewood, where to hit it how to use a spreader. Even how to fell a tree. if we lost all power and mod cons I would take the kids to my parents property and become one of those self sufficient off the grid type properties. It nearly is anyway as they have wind and solar power only and back up generators and its rain water only. They have meat and eggs and veggies. Sounds pretty ideal actually!

Insomnian you are, to my mind, portraying a type of doomsday scenario. Anarchy would be the norm fresh meat may well be the most available...long pork. But there again lets just put the rose coloured glasses back on and see it as an exercise in who's got the skills and imagination to keep themselves fed, watered and comfortable until the power comes back on...

Inthekiss - That sounds awesome. I used to go up to a farm up north that was pretty much the same. Self sufficient.Good on you for having everything sorted for just such an occasion. TheSaint83 - Reading is always good, and fires take next to no time to learn how to start and keep going. Being a good cook is always a strong point. Enjoylifealways - Never even crossed my mind a Hippie Commune, but sounds great !! I dare say if something like this happened there'd be a few communes pop up where people with varying strengths came together to make a place of prosperity. Withoutaclue - Going back to nature sounds wonderful. As far as early retirement, I think most of us could handle that!Living off the land would be something to get used to again, for a lot of us. Some as I've noticed in this forum already seem to have that under control. Amylee2000 - How wonderful people watching is, isn't it ? To actually find someone that's not caught up in their day to day technology ( a complete stranger ) and start chatting - Good on you, that's awesome. As far as looking at the stars without the streetlights, I to have done that. I used to travel up to a farm every couple of weeks, such a different look away from the hustle and bustle of city life.Packing up a camper sounds like a treat.

Levieux - That leaky hut definitely sounds like a challenge. I almost envy your great Aunt. Sounds so peaceful and serene on her farm! Your current place sounds as if you have just about everything you'd need should the world go dead. Fresh honey, eggs, veggies just need a few cows for fresh milk and you'd be set! Litonya - Yes, a lot of us grew up with a lot less gadgets. In-fact my generation came through just as the '' green writing black background ) computers came into play. Interesting idea about the going shopping. Would be a sight to see, the younger generation struggling without their tills, but I think a few might surprise us.Would be very interesting to see people standing outside communicating the old fashioned way again wouldn't it ? You have a better memory then me as far as having everyone's names and numbers on hand. Missb72 - How lucky you are to have had a Dad teach you those things! I could see you teaching your kids what your Dad taught you and them just staring in utter amazement as you felled a tree!!Moving off to a farm as some have suggested seems to be the way to go. Idea indeed, is funny how we take such things for granted these days. Cavey50 - I have taken down the name Immanuel Velikovsky and will definitely have a look at some of his books. Should be a very interesting read. Thank you for shedding some light on someone that may have already put pen to paper on such a subject. As always, a valued source of information!! AGuyWithRespect - Right you are. There is a reason rich people are usually rich, and it's not usually due to dumb luck. Maybe they see something most of us don't. Sad but true - Yes, but who do we really have to blame for it in the end. After all, aren't we the ones polluting the world ? SimpleNeeds2 - They must just do so. What a different world to the world it is right now though. Jack_Denials - Ah yes, a Doomsday scenario ( maybe ) and Anarchy may well be the new fresh meat. At least for a while until people managed to get their head around it. Rose colored glasses can be fun, but don't always allow for the reality of a situation.I think you have valid points in both parts of your post. I guess, should such a thing ever happen, we will see exactly what happens. Although I hope we as a race come together and learn to live and prosper. You may be right and all may fall to Anarchy, lets hope should things come to pass that not be the case. Thank you all for your contribution, has been an exciting eye opener to how many of us have the skills, the places to go, and the knowledge of authors who have covered such a thing before.Sorry If I missed anyone's post, was not intentional.

I reckon people would have a lot more sex than they do now in general. Things like TVs, smartphones, computers, etc. get in the way of intimacy for many people way too often.People would probably be less stressful too. Technology is meant to help us work fast and better, but in many cases it just means we work harder and longer which makes us more stressed and tired. There would be less of that I'd say.

I personally would run for the hills and bunker down. Society as we know it would crumble and fall, law and and order would be non existent and the government would fail, having no way to communicate with the nation and maintain order. The economy would grind to a halt and currency would be worthless. There would be a mad, panicked rush for people to gather supplies and food. Rioting, looting and crime would prevail. Those with the best chance of survival would be those with access to food and water, which will fiercely fought for by those with the guts and firepower to do so. But yes, after all of the chaos dies down, it would be nice to stop and look at the stars :) - Posted from rhpmobile

We've systematically created a world that we can not stand. Be fantastic to switch it all off. Yeh, there would be some conflict as those who can survive do (not necessarily those currently with "the power" or most degrees). Having to band together, share resources...... shit, actually speak to ones neighbours. Oh for the day. Feel sorry for the Rocckafeller's, Rothschild's and the like...... power to the people. Some veggies int the garden, few chickens..... and no multinationals!!!!!

  • RHP

I'd agree with that one, I have a backlog of alcohol in the fridge, what a shame it'd have to be consumed rather quickly. Miss Meander - Ah, I stand corrected, never got around to seeing that movie, but from what I remember of the trailers, you hit the nail on the head!! TheBurninator - Agree whole hardheartedly. That which was supposed to make our lives easier, has to an extent made our lives more toxic. They was an article in the last year stating that kids these days were getting less sleep due to them not '' shutting off'' because of the ability to access the internet via their phones. Sydneycpl88 - Very valid points, and yes, I think there would be to some extent chaos. All goes to I guess each individual, as you can see in this thread, there's a few different ways people would react if something like this should happen. Violence, Anarchy, all of that would eventually end. Would be like a forest after a fire a few years down the track. After the carnage comes solace, peace, rebuilding. Jimmie4412 - Now that sounds good. I don't know how to make my own butter, but even just bread toasted over an open fire would be nice. I used to do that on my monthly visits up to the farm. Back to nature as a lot of stated in this thread is so under rated. More people should try it. Guess that's why so many people love camping! BradBi - I actually do take time out and speak to my neighbours. I like to know the people I'm surrounded by. Is something like neighbourhood watch, but given i'm away from my house for up to 14 hours at a time, gives me some peace of mind, should something happen, they'd call. The calm after the storm would be a nice thing.

Loved ones, food, water and defences....... A romantic notion, but I fear the reality would be somewhat different. If the world went dark, it would go feral for some time, the "preppers" would actually be in the best position to survive the initial panic. No way of feeding the masses due to our artificial over population would cause people to resort to any measures to be able to eat, it wouldn't be pretty. Mr ABC.

People who have never had to shoot or kill a thing to live, nor grow food would panic. Half the kids today don't even know where milk comes from. You would have to be ruthless, if you want to survive. I lived and worked on a Kibbutz in Isreal, that's how they survived by banding together but they are also ruthless. and everyone is taught to use a gun, they all have to join the army. Once the dust settles and people are no longer in survival mode, then it might be idea but that may take a while as there are to many people and not enough food. I even store seeds. I guess I have lived in places when there has been nothing to rely on by yourself. Try working on a cattle station when your 19 out there in the NT bush. A bar of soap was a treasure.
