Whoops, I've upset the wowsers again.

November 02 2012

From my workplace, I have to go through the main street, when I'm driving home. It's a busy street with a roundabout at almost every intersection. When I'm riding my motorcycle however, there's a shortcut I can take, through the park next to my work, which avoids the traffic altogether. There is a road through the park but it has a locked gate, near the oval's grandstand, to stop through traffic. You can still drive your car up to this gate from either direction, it's not a restricted area, but then you have to turn around and go back the way you came. On my bike, I just go around the gate, between the posts placed there for pedestrians. I don't hoon through, I idle through, in first gear, moving no faster than the cars. I stop and give way to pedestrians and keep a good eye out for runaway youngsters. I don't know what law I'm breaking, riding through the posts but I'm sure they have one.Still, I've been doing this for quite a while and while I get the occasional filthy look, no one has ever challenged me. Let's face it, I'm not doing any harm and I'm not a hazard while the cars that drive up there and park or drop kids off then do a three point turn can be. If anyone is upset by what I'm doing, it's because I can do it while they can't. They're not inconvenienced in any way. Well today, when I rode down that way, I found that the posts had been pulled up and several new posts put in their place closer together. As far as I know, I'm the only person who rides through there, I've never seen anyone else go that way so that seems like quite an expense to go through just for little old me and the posts weren't too close together so I rode through anyway (hehehehe). There were a couple of workmen nearby, possibly the ones who set the new posts in. They didn't look impressed either. C'est la vie.

You've help to keep employed serveral err post diggers not to mention all the bureaucracy that goes behind receiving the complaints, processing them, putting it to council. The approval process, the enviromental impact study, the community consultaion. And that's before you even get to the manufacture of the replacement posts; the removal of existing said posts and then installation of updated and firestandard "biped traffic flow channeling and control devices".   Then again maybe they just need to be replaced.

There is a cycle way that runs around the river that I use to commute along. I still ride that way almost weekly. At the snobby East Perth development there is a 100m long bridge with wooden planks that rattle as you cycle across it. It's not a lot of noise, just a dull rattle as some of the planks move. The rich people that hang live near the bridge got signs put up saying wheel you bike. A pedestrian maze was put in at each end and one in the middle. I refuse. We have an attitude in Australia that people are something that needed to be constantly watched and controlled. I think we inherited it from the Poms who are so incredibly class driven. Don't ever let the lower classes have their freedom or they'll revolt!!Pretty sure that's not what my granddad fought for.Why is it called Shit Creak? Some years ago their sewage main, that hangs under the bridge, burst turning their little Venice into a stinky pond for a few days.

You are doing the right thing and reducing road congestion and people just persecute you.   I lane split at the lights and the amount of people who object to this is amazing.   I am not slowing them down, I am not sitting in my car playing with my iphone, I have actual fun going to work, I am not taking their place in the que and I don't rattle through at a great rate of knots.   Yet I still get abused, people open their door and call it "karma", I ride to the conditions and after getting a bit of a lead from the lights and am sitting on the speed limit I have people come roaring past from 50 or 60 metres behind. Then more abuse when I pass at the lights and they are stuck in traffic.   Bugger me what is it with people?   Mike

Sorry - but councils totally f*cking shit me to tears! Heaven help us if someone uses a little short cut!?   Why not do something better for the community like make sure your library is stocked, offer better community children's services or aged care services, or fix pot holes that break my car, or fine me for parking on my friggen lawn (oh sorry, no it's the "council verge") to wash my car and not install new poles to stop one from using a nifty short cut.   Get the EFF over it!   I dunno about your area, but here is SA most councils are JERKS and need the sticks up their arse's yanked out hard and fast!   end. rant.

You have all made me smile...Actually I just ride slowly and quietly. If I make too much noise those rich buggers are likely to start shooting at me from their balconies.. You know what those rich folk are like? The vast majority of cyclists ride sensibly across the bridge.. It was funny a few years back when somone unbolted the pedestrian mazes and stole them though. ~laughs~
