When were you last tested?

August 31 2020

This topic came up recently chatting to a new couple when they mentioned they'd never been tested and thought it wasn't something they could ask their regular GP. Coming out of winter and with covid restrictions lifting in some states it's the perfect time to find out your current status. In Adelaide at least, we have clinic 275, it's attached to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. All they do day in and out it's std screening. No Medicare card needed, if you're really uncomfortable they don't even need your real name, it's just about getting people in higher risk populations like ours tested. It's a judgement free zone too, while taking my history last year and mentioning that my last encounter included a bi couple the female doctor asked when I'd last had sex with my wife... as a lot of us would answer, it was at the same time... the Dr's response was, "oh, nice!" Now, that's what you want to hear from your health care provider, not judgement. In SA at least, Shine SA have a list of GP's that work with the LGBT community and are very used to this sort of thing and will give you quality judgement free care. Those in other states, please add your recommendations on where to get judgement free lifestyle friendly testing and healthcare. Get tested before summer hits! Play safe with your friends folks😘

Spicy kale as always a good post . Such an important , not often spoken about topic . We do have STD clinics in Melbourne . Like most people , we are time poor and the clinics , from what I know are located in Melbourne CBD and Carlton . This is far from us and only open Monday thru to Friday . I stand to be corrected on this. In Melbourne we a spoilt for choice with Bulk Bill Medical Clinics . It’s a good option to seeing your regular GP , obviously free of charge with weekend and late night openings . Stay safe everyone . Ax

In Queensland North of Brisbane we are happy with Clinic 21 attached to the Nambour Hospital, confidential, non judgemental , and true specialist in their field. After Blood, urine and physical examination, we recieve a text a few days later saying " All tests were negative" Last visit they suggested we look at "Prep" on demand that is the day of play and a couple days later which is way more effective than condoms with the HIV risk for viginal sex. See: https://hivrisk.cdc.gov/risk-estimator-tool/#-~mb|rvi.prep

Testing is so important, even amongst couples who play 'safe' (I use quotations marks as condoms for penetration is only safe to one extent). I don't think bi-annual is necessary unless playing without condoms but an annual test puts minds at ease. There are good sexual health clinics in Perth (and mostly free) so not wanting to ask one's usual GP for a test isn't good enough a reason to not get tested IMHO.

I didn’t answer part of the question , my apologies . For us , it would depend how active we had been with others . Condoms are a 100% must. So far this year no testing needed . I use my regular G.P. If I can’t see her I will use a BUlk bill clinic as I suggested .

An advantage of attending clinics such as Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (apart from anonymity) is that are so experienced in sexual health because they see so many people each day. The nurses are super professional and the experience is painless. But you do need to dedicate a couple hours on a weekday to your visit.

In Adelaide at least, a number of doctors that have worked at clinic 275 have gone out into private practice specialising in sexual health. Both clinic 275 and Shine SA have a list of those for people that prefer not to use the walk up clinic and make appointments. As ReyandJean said there’s something to be said for seeing someone that does this all day, every day. You'd be scared if you knew how little time new doctors spend on sexual health at uni, finding someone that's passionate about it helps.

Hi guys, Great post and amazing the number of people that don't get tested. Be aware that with current covid restrictions Clinic 275 is only checking people with active std symptoms therefore a regular 3 monthly check needs to be through a gp or as suggested by Spicey via one of the Shine listed gp's. Clinic 275 can be found on Facebook under Adelaide Sexual Health Centre.

Hubby and I regularly get tested to which it’s become a habit now. We do it around every 4 months or so. When I go in all I say is that I have multiple sexual partners and would like to get tests done. Have not had any issues at all

Always between different partners so the potential people we are playing with can see our results and know we are health conscious

One of the times I wished I lived in a city. It was super awkward for us as there isn’t any clinics where we live. But necessary. I also think it depends on frequency of play as to how frequent testing happens.

We go to metro north sexual health clinic on Roma Street Brisbane. Have also been to PASH satellite clinic at Logan Hospital. At Logan Hospital my general testing appointment was with an infectious diseases doctor which was pretty impressive. Free and the parking is easy!

I’m all for protective sex only. Some STI are not cured with a simple antibiotic....., sure on the LS ocassion I get extra frisky n can’t help myself- but regardless of this I get tested Everytime I have unprotected sex 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s the right thing to do.

I had one doctor say I had to pay because I wasn’t taking reasonable precautions and had multiple partners, I used condoms, so I guess he was referring to the 2 guys I had slept with... he actually said why should the government pay for your stupidity? What did he expect? Abstinence?

I go through GP but never see same doctor and I just straight up ask for STI check, get it done every 6mths. Oh, in Perth here 🤗 Some doctors even ask if I wanted HIV test and or others, I always just said yep I will take them all while I'm already there, no harm done from losing a little blood 😋 Hardly doctors ask the reason why, I think they see my medical history, a repeats 😂
