When I was young I dreamt of being a garbage man, then a doctor, even a famous sportsman - the list was pretty much endless... I'm currently in a line of work that I really enjoy, but I think I may have missed my calling as a fluffer in the adult film industry........ Mr Kinkster

I was at school reading was my passion and so was social justice, even though I hadn't heard that term used.In my late teens and early twenties I worked in bookshops and met some amazing people. One of my then colleagues became a famous and somewhat infamous photographer .Many famous actors, dancers, writers ,comedians, artists etc were either customers or came into the store for book signings. Then my career took an entirely new direction and I began working with people with a disability.I became involved in the Self Help movement and developed and impemented employment options and arts based projects for disadvantaged people. I also spent many years living in and being actively involved in Tibetan Buddhist communities both here and in the USA for a short time. My life has taken another new turn, now I am working part time at a local school tutoring young people who have learning disabilities and pursuing my love of writing.I have recently met some fellow writers who live locally and we are in the process of organizing a writers festival. I think that basically I am an adventurous opportunist,I have been fortunate in that amazing opportunities have come my way and that I have taken full advantage of them.I have definitely followed my passions and lived my dreams.

Was and still is to become a member of the police. I used to work as a security guard, and have also worked extensively in crowd control(not a bouncer...I hate that term), but I lived every minute, every time I would go to work. Helping people, protecting people and their property.....what a great job! At the moment I'm an interstate truck driver, and I love the job too, but I yearn to don the blue uniform.

For 17 years. High school art teacher. Loved it but I've evolved. Now I'm a mum. I now realise that that is my dream job, for now. I'll go back to uni when the kids are in school to study for my next dream job ...

growing up in a migrant family (mum spanish, dad greek) and initially having english as a second language, my parents came to this amazing country with literally the clothes on the backs and a handfull of photos to remind them of those they left back home.   mum worked an asortment of factory jobs from seamstress to working the production lines at philips. the old boy took his trade background and became a renderer.   so from the age of 8 till i finished my high school education, i spent nearly every weekend and school holidays labouring and rendering with the old boy.   i loved it. hanging out with the old man, being blokey on sites and working on amazing buildings. but the work has taxing and the old man's constant mantra was off to university and become a lawyer/doctor.   so being a non-compliant type of kid, i went on to get a double degree in architecture and building. haha   was fortunate enough to get snapped up by an international firm straight out of uni and spent the first 4 years of my working life on design teams working on projects in places ranging from dubai to seychelles to barcelona.   since that time i moved back and have been running my own firm for the last 13 years. i love it. everyday is different. from designing someone's dream home to sourcing the right kind of stripper pole.   i was called in just recently to give a talk for careers night at my old high school and told the room i love my job, i am living the dream. the fact that u need to be part psychologist, part artist, part mathematician all fits perfectly with the person i am.   oh and no, i dont wear all black, dont drive an audi or bmw, and am probably the meanest looking mother fucker to ever tread the drafting boards. bahahaha

There was a guy not long ago on the news, what a breath of fresh air he was... He wanted all his life to be a Police officer but he didn't make the grade, so he went and bought his own badge, uniform and blue light for his car, he pulled over many people and gave them tickets etc, until the long arm of the law caught up with him... I think he is in prison now... pretending to be a Prison officer.   I thought it was very funny, talk about persistence.

I always wanted to be a doctor - or a professional dancer   And I am (well a doctor - I dance on the side for fun - professional ?? hahaha )   However growing up in a funeral home , I was much more fascinated with death - live people scare the shit out of me...so I chose pathology as my chosen field and from there, as the years went on , I studied forensics etc...   After 4 months off work last year due to various reasons - I started back at work this week - just 3 days to start with....but oh so good to be back..... and realised how much I missed it...yep I did   While I was off work, I returned to Uni..and Ive commenced a law degree...............what was I thinking ?......   ....kick me

I had a nurses outfit to dress up in. It was always what I wanted I be, so I did. I am still a nurse in NICU, but I would also have loved to be a horticulturist as I love creating in my garden. I only work 2 days a week though as poker has been a great supplement to my income for the past decade or more.

When I grow up. When I was young I wanted to be an artist but my father said no money in it. So I left school and became a Jillaroo on a station in the NT, all of 18 years old. I have been a barmaid, a waitress, a employment consultant, a social worker in prisons , a cleaner a cook on a banana plantation in Israel a shop girl, nanny in Greece a field hand picking grapes, banana, mango , beans , strawberry A factory worker I have been living the dream all my life, as I think any work is good work. I just took what job came along and was not to proud to clean another house, while I had a university degree. My best achievement are my two grown girls, and my every changing and amazing relationship with my husband I am living the dream still, doing my artwork and kicking up my heels with my lovers. My daughters say when I die my funeral will be like out of the movie BIG FISH My life has also had its struggles like all of us, but its one step at a time and make that step a skip. I will let you know the answer when I go grown up. You could be waiting a long time TR peterpan

Currently unemployed looking for anything to get me back in the workforce. At the same time I am still trying to find that allusive niche.   As a kid (including up to 18yo) I wanted to be: A doctor/nurse (cant stand the sight of blood or needles mind you), A hairdresser, A teacher (primary school/childcare), An accounts manager (went as far as telling my mum she couldn't die/retire before I was old enough to take her job – the things 5yo say), A scientist (I was 10, I had no full concept of what they did just thought it sounded cool), a secretary, an actress (stage and film), a model (fashion/print), a fashion designer, a stay at home mum/housewife, a business owner (retail/hospitality), a cocktail waitress, a hospitality manager, a bar and gaming attendant, A flight attendant, A travel agent, A tour operator/tour guide, An events manager/co-ordinator, an Olympic shooter (I wanted to be the next Michael Diamond...I was 16 and never even held a gun unless you count a water pistol), an interior designer, an architect, a tradie (plumber/electrician/mechanic), a landscape designer, a florist, a cake maker, a park ranger/fisheries........   I think you get the gist - my dreams of a future profession were/are all over the place. The closest I've come to any of those is.....a bar and gaming attendant - I had been doing that on and off (mostly on) mixed with a customer service role in a large poultry company for the past 10years. I left that job Easter last year and haven't looked back. Being sexually harassed by a drunken customer was the last straw for me.   Today however, I ultimately want to be a stay at home mum/housewife - but without kids or pets to look after I'm finding it very boring. But even when I get the said kids/pets I will look into a career I can do from home so that I am still earning an income of my own.

Now I'm currently working towards my goal of becoming a trainer for the company I work for, not quite what I envisioned but I really enjoy my job and the company I work for is great. Hoping to one day be able to travel around australia and the world with my job.

I always wanted to play with mechanical things as a kid, i use to build my on mini bikes so i did an apprenticship as a motor mechanic. I lasted 10 years as a mechanic before i came to my senses and joined the Police force, that lasted 25 years ( i must have been mad to stay that long) and to be honest the best thing i got out of that was my wife. Now i manage a Brothel and i can tell you it's nothing like most people think it is.   I'm still not sure what i want to be when i grow up though.

My father, (a ex boxer ).. left us when we were very young.. so when l just only turned 14 and I had to leave school to help support my mum and sister. At the beginning it looked like I was destined to work in a factory and could'nt hold down a job for love for money. Like alot of young guys I had no idea what I wanted to do so I took on anything only to find but I become easily bored when given all the shit repetitious jobs.. When I turned 18 I was lucky enough to land a contact with a ARL club now called NRL (rugby league ) which lasted for 14 years and was very good to me. When I retired from footy, I took up a consulting position with a large well known company , staying there for quite a few years before getting itchy feet and taking up my present business which I now love. These days' Im out doors, visiting many different organisations eg : banks, lawyers, doctors, large company's etc. most who have great people I get to deal with, not to mention the sexy receptionists I sometimes get to flirt with..lolI also get to travel o'seas at least once or twice a year for both business and pleasureLong gone are the days when I did'nt have a clue what I was going to do..

My childhood dream job was to be a vet, as I love animals. I probably would have started studying it after high school but the uni here didn't have a vet science course at that time and i didn't want to move to Brisbane. So I studied environmental science and then never ended up working in that field. Finally last year I took the plunge and started vet....and found out that it is actually not for me. I am too soft when it comes to animals and would probably have a nervous breakdown every time I would have to put one down. So I'm going back to finish my occupational therapy degree which I started a few years back. I think that is the profession I will be sticking with....it really interests me, it offers a lot of variety and opportunities for travel, and I can be more objective when it comes to humans and not let my emotions get in the way of doing the job.

Like jay-me, I've bounced around from job to job from 15 til now, I haven't worked for the last year due to injury/workcover and now I'm in a position to choose (within reason) what I want to pursue. However I have no idea what I want to do, I'd love criminal psychology but that's damn near impossible, plus workcover won't support me for however many years. On top of that, I'm stuck with a 4.5-6kg lifting limit for the rest of my life so I can't even do some management training in fields which ive had previous experience in. Like GB, I did security for a few years and loved it, covert armed cash transport, pubs/clubs, etc etc. the one downfall was the constant threats of assault charges when you have to physically remove someone. Lucky for me no charges ever went past the police questioning phase.

What i really wanted to do when i left school (no uni for me - the grades just were not there!) was be an air hostess... but alas i was too short... Remember the days of TAA & Ansett! Oh to one of those ladies who got to travel the world while serving you a coffee! And the pilots!   So then i decided i would work in a chemist. Not a pharmacist, just the girl in the shop that led you to the haemoroid cream or vaginal thrush creams! For me, that didnt last i hated being sooooo nice & polite all the time!   So after being fired after just 5 months in my very first job at 17 (big suprise) Dad sent me to the receptionist centre in Melbourne to learn to type & answer a phone!   6 weeks into the course and they had a bulletin board of jobs in the area, i went for a receptionist one at a local Real Estate Agent and 27 years later im still in Real Estate.   Im not on the front desk anymore (anyone who knows me well knows why!) but have worked my way up as far as i can go, and have to admit, i do enjoy my job and after so many years, late last year i started studying for my full Estate Agents Licence...   What is ironic is that i do accounting. In year 11 when i finished school i got an F for maths.... other than year 8 when i got a C... i had never passed maths!   But now there is the invention of the calculator! Saved my ass!

Since I was little I always wanted to be a police woman, crime scene investigator...or a flight attendant, but they didn't get much money... When I left school I got a job as receptionist and worked my way up the ladder to a manager after 8 years there....moved to brisbane from Melbourne to run the warehouse up here...became redundant and then got a work from home job..,met my partner and decided to start our own business working from home...it's a successful business now and we are lucky enough to be able to take off and travel the world when we want to :-) So I think I've found my dream job...- Posted from rhpmobile

The occupations I was dreaming of as a kid: artist (I was never very original but I was great at copying - friends reckoned I would have made tons as a professional forgerer), or a vet (love animals). Didn't have much of a clue what I wanted to do during high school, I did well in a wide variety of subjects so it wasn't like I had a particular niche. Although I did do particularly well in food tech and topped it for two years so tried work experience as a trainee chef, almost died. Commercial kitchens are not for me!   Studied a smart-sounding double degree my parents suggested as I had no ideas at the time and relatively enjoyed it, although I can't say it drives me with particular passion. Have now finished my studies and not quite sure in which direction to take it and if I'm up for being absorbed in it for 50 hours a week. Would love to become a celebrity chef though. :)

firstly.......THANK YOU...... for the open an very interesting stories and im sure is a mere snippet of adventures along the way........me i left school at year 11 and got on the tools, probably because it was around me, i've always been an animal lover so vet or zoologist was up there but under it all i yearned for something creative, i diligently finished my apprentiship early with a couple of awards thrown in then chased the mining crowd, and even though moved from fifo work i find that the away work can be a tricky trap to conquer.......... but we do the best we can and wear wide smiles of deep love and friendship. from here i certainly am thinking of opening my own business and driving forward toward successful well delivered projects and who knows from there.......... cheerz XXXXX

...doing something that certainly pays the bills although after many years, it's become simply a mechanism to allow me to pursue something I had done since I was a child and now has become part of my reality as that sort of 'job' I never really thought I would do. When something you love becomes what you do...you really aren't working at all. When I grow up and the income exceeds need in doing only what I love to do, which should be soon...I do only what and exactly what I choose to do.Oddly enough...none of it has a thing to do with my formal education although that is a bonus too.

I left school early and became a hairdresser, finished my apprenticship but hated the job so went back to school (TAFE), did VCE (High School Certificate in Victoria) got really good marks and then went to Uni. Studied for my Dream Job and worked for a very little while doing that before Children Came Along (bless them). Well The Dream Job and families don't really mix well (such a high divorce rate in my field!) so I took some time off and then went back to study, did another degree while the chickies were wee and have gone into another field. It's not too bad, I feel quite passionately about the job I'm in but as a child this was the last job I would have thought I'd be in. Seriously!

Thankyou all for sharing your stories! So interesting n inspiring! I left school after doing the HSC in 1990 n went onto uni to study nursing! I worked in a nursing home while studying, a very interesting place to work! I met my husband at uni n I decided not to finish my nursing degree due to personal issues! I went on to becoming a fitness instructor while also working for a chiropractor..... A better position come along at a pharmacy, n this job I loved, I also remained being a fitness instructor! We moved to where we live now and I continued to work in pharmacy n as a fitness instructor. 4yrs ago I had a huge career change n I now work with children... This is not my dream job. I am now studying remedial massage therapy, still working with children, but keeping my options open!

As a kid I wanted to be a pilot but I found out that me and height we don't like each other. Yeas I fear of heights... Then as a teenager I discover cookery which became one of my hobbies and I decide to follow that as soon as possible afte the school... so I went to one of the top colleges in europe to unleash my talent but after three months I gave up because I had to touch and smell seafood things and fishes...Ah yes i hate the smell or the taste of whatever comes under the sea. So I decide to follow my second hoby which is computers. And yes I became an other IT guy....In 2004 I said ok... I can cook for my friends and me... I am in tecnhology and computers but what about my third hobby. Which is music. So I started to work as d.j which after a couple of years change with a radio show for 6 hours every week. i said ok but what about kids..I love kids....So I start to teaching kids. In 2009 i realized that doing 4 things at the same time it is not so good... So I gave up everything except form computer and I became IT in AUDI... That was my zenith... Computers and cars...I am dreamin or what ??? No it was not a dream it was the reallity which I fought all those years. 2010 the year of my descent. 2011 working as a casual stuff and serving people and making coffees :) I am very obsessed with my coffee... If i dont see a smile of happiness to my customers then offer them an other one.... The boss doesn't know this but she sees all the happy customers coming in waves and she is ok with that.... meanwhile I am putting all my effords to go back to the IT world... and yes I start to learn base guitar. Because of Jazz and Rythm and Blues styles are simple the best to my ears. So what else is there...perhaps I will buy microsoft and I ll became a thrill of the base guitar...Till then... my advise is to barricade your computers and protect your ears... :)

Still have a thing for planes...one day.In mid-high school, loved the cooking classes and wanted to leave school at end of year 10 to do an apprenticeship, mum refused again, stating I was to finish year 12 minimum... still love cooking and experimenting.Moved to Brisbane, as I wanted to be an architect seeing that opportunities were better here than Perth. Well, realised that is was more of a hobby to design than a passion...Finally got into sports science, seeing that I have always been active and sporting. Love my field both the clinical and sports medicine side of it. Just started my masters.. who knows where is will take me, hopefully to various places of the earth:)

When I was in my early teens, that is all u ever dreamt of being ! Never told anyone at the time though as I was raised in catholic girls schools :) I have had a very financially rewarding career for the last 15 years, flying interstate and overseas every 3 weeks to speak at events and teach what I love. Unfortunately I have severely overworked myself these last 3 years, and now don't seem to love what I do so much ! My dream job now I am nearly 42 is to be a beach bum , to downsize my ridiculously over the top lifestyle and do not much at all . To live each day looking at the ocean , having great sex,and weekend parties around a fire! I want to be happily unemployed ! ( I will retire at 50 but damn 8 more years!???)

I will race you to beach-bum status...a very noble/worthy endeavour! After years of starting various businesses I finally recognised the pattern (slow learner perhaps!) and discovered the success of the business in each case would ultimately be incredibly exhausting and very much an anchor geographically - plus would eventually miss the mark as far as emotional fulfilment goes also. So for the last 2 years the shackles have been off and Im having a ball...and seriously focussed on the road towards fun and doing as I please - and Im in total agreement that a beach lifestyle and the ocean will be pivotal !   PS/ Teaching what you love has no doubt been a wonderful prelude to a more relaxed/indulgent future!

I was terrified of flying. My first memory of being in a light aircraft was me trying to find the way out while dad was flying....must've been around 2 years old.I overcame my fear at about 8, when I flew to Canberra with Ansett.Since then, I've always wanted to fly. When I was 17, I started lessons, and after three years, I had my private licence. I'd wanted a commercial licence, but circumstances conspired against me, and that never happened. After a couple of years of taking the mates up, life got in the way, and I stopped flying. For the next fifteen years, I could only watch other people fly, occasionally talking my way into a joy ride. After going through my separation and divorce, and moving back home from the other side of the country, I found myself with the opportunity to fly again, and regained my currency.3 months ago, I passed my flying instructor test, so now I teach people to fly on weekends.Next month, my son turns 14, and will be starting his flying lessons. I'll be a very proud dad when he does his first solo.
