Its not about being scared of a few boats coming in now and then. Its about trying to show these allegals that its not that easy to get permanent residence in this country. If we dont do anything, the boats would be lined up nose to tail 10 wide from here to Indonesia.Now thats scary.

anyone who owns a black ACDC t-shirt, ALL COLLINGWOOD SUPPORTERS, justin bieber fans and anyone over 18 who still rides a skateboard. throw in all people who gave thier kids last names where first names should be, eg taylor, jackson, mackenzie. that should be a good swap for a few boat people.

Oh of course we don't want too many of those foreign types in here and both sides of govt know it's a scary issue and are plugging the same ideas so why the hell do they need to advertise it? Hey does anyone have a parent who remembers being a LEGAL immigrant to this country and getting the old "wogs go home" yelled at them? People thought they'd be no good for our country too. Now I think we do need to have some control over immigration but all this scare mongering is so bloody stupid, so bloody Australian. Laid back are we? Bollocks. OK stop the illegals then we can work on stopping the Asians then maybe get retrospective and send all the Italians and Greeks back too. Oh damn I nearly forgot the legal people of "middle eastern decent". From day dot Australia relied on immigration of the "not wanted", the "undesirables" gee I'm one of the many descendants from criminals (or does convict sound nicer?). So maybe, just maybe our future undesirables may forge out an even better country? See Brae has the right idea, swap the population we know we can do without for the unknown and see how we go. Oh and Brae I don't really know which way to look, left or right? Seems to be crap on each side!

yep permanent residency shouldn't be easy to get, maybe give them a temporary visa for 5 years then assess what they have or haven't added to society before giving them the stamp. Same might go for all us long term residents, surely if you've done sweet F.A. for 5 years you're outa here!

From what ive heard... what people are calling ' illegal immigrants' arriving by boat are actually asylum seekers and therefor not illegal. So maybe?? being locked up in a detention centre for up to 5 years??( i think) while which ever political party is in makes a decision about their future is a touch wrong??An illegal immigrant here is some one who comes to Australia with a passport and visa and overstays their offical welcome (mainly poms and europeans)and dont we all know some of them lol I do realise this is a very left view and not all will agree with the sentiments.I wonder why the indigenous peoples of the area never imprisoned Captain Cook??Ignorance of the law? Maybe they had this hope he would fuck off back to pommy land? Maybe they figured Australia was big enough for a few more people??Gourmet xxx standing for a multi cultural society

Yes yes I forgot to mention the original inhabitants. I bet the loudest voices against "the foreign invasion" would also be the loudest voices to say that the aborigine should get over our invasion of them? Now on this note I'm all for dropping the angst and working together to make life better for all Australians. Now how to get out of voting? Gourmet even though it seems useless (and most likely is) everyone should attempt to have their say. I live in a too safe electorate so my vote counts even less. What we need is a lot more swinging electorates (surely RHPers would agree with this) so if you're deluded by it all then vote for the 2nd or 3rd most popular vote getter. The smaller the margin a seat is won by the more the polly will listen to his constituents. Swing away people!

I live in an area where the constituents unfailingly vote in the party representative who does not represent my sentiments. In fact I have little or no sentiment for any of the choices. So I diligently turn up on election day and park my fat arse in the little cubicle where I unceremoniously doodle all over the voting card like a person devoid of any form of sanity... putting numbers all over the place... except in the little boxes... and letting my pencil driven creativity run wild like a person with Saint Vitus' Dance.
