Viagra. How it actually works, basically

August 12 2009

I just wanted to explain exactly how the drug Viagra (Sildenafil) actually works due to the amount of people who talk about it in the wrong context. First of all lets talk about how a man gets an erection (boner, stiffy, rod, pole for humor sake)First of all, a man needs to have some form of stimulus. This can either be in the form of physical, visual, mental or a combination of all three. What this causes is a signal to be sent from the brain to some arteries in the base of the penis. This signal goes along the nerves till it get to the base of the penis and then releases NITRIC OXIDE (a chemical found in the nerves) onto the surrounding arteries (blood vessels). What this nitric oxide does is cause the arteries to relax and allow more blood into the penis = good times , a erection! This release of nitric oxide continues for as long as the stimulus from the brain continues. After ejaculation (blowing your load) an enzyme called cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (big name, not important) breaks down nitric oxide, causing the blood vessels in the base of the penis to constrict. Less blood into the penis = bad times , loss of erection. :( What Viagra does is blocks this cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 enzyme. With this enzyme removed, the Nitric oxide is left to stimulate the blood vessels at the base of the penis for longer which causes more blood to go into the penis and the maintenance of an erection. So contrary to popular belief, Viagra does not give u an erection, merely allows a man to keep one longer. If there is no stimulus, then Viagra will have no effect on a man's penis. Now there are no excuses for getting it mixed up. That said, this is only a brief summary of the mechanisms involved. If you want more details, go see wikipedia.Comments?P.s. Don't fuck with this stuff! If you take it and are on some other medications / drugs / random other things, it will stop your heart. ALWAYS TALK TO A DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING VIAGRA OR ANY OTHER MEDICATION.

While the primary target of Viagra is erectile dysfunction, it is still a drug - which means that *anyone* can take it, whether one has ED or not; the chemical reaction propagated by the drug will function regardless if one has ED. However, the side effects of Viagra are quite well documented. However, as Xer02 says, don't mess with this, cause it may have unforeseen interactions with any drugs one might already be taking. Viagra works only on a majority of the popular. If you're in the 10% or so of people on the wrong end of the gene pool, it won't do anything for you, or it might give you a bad trip.
