The standard deviation for the perfect body

February 01 2011

Ok I was thinking the other day ( it sometimes happens! ) after reading that Stalky has 12kgs of fun lovin to get back to his ideal weight and it struck me that I'm in exactly the same boat after a fun lovin summer. Then I got to thinking is there an allowable weight gain/loss above or below our ideal weight that makes us unacceptably out of shape? More to the point of my thoughts was could there be an ideal percentage of ideal weight where once passed we're definitely "out of shape"?For my body I think my ideal weight would be around the mid 80kgs. I seem to feel ok and get positive responses from others up until around the mid 90kgs, so this is around a 12% leeway. Although a dare say I'd be way too skinny at the mid 70kgs (which is where the silly BMI index would have me)So what do we all think, is there a magic percentage here? Is it different for above and below ideal weight? Is it different for men and women?OK I know in reality there's so many factors to be taken into account but was just a thought and wanted to see if it could spark any HAPPY discussion. Please if you can't discuss without ridiculing others then move onto another post!

well over the Xmas break i banged on around 5kg and knocked my weight up to 94kg .. i am happy with 88kg as it works for me being 6 foot 4 i dont carry any gut at that weight. Most of my problem is the beer it just loves to hang out on my GUT

I'm pretty sure we most will agree that BMI is stupid. I don't know about the magical percentage because I think 'ideal weight' is a very wide range between two unhealthy extremes. As long as we are healthy then our weight is ideal.

Yeah... bmi measures are rediculous if you've ever done any weight training. My body has apparently decided that it will never be below 82kg unless I'm dying. 6 kg above that however, and I start to feel uncomfortable.... I think you shouldn't worry about weight though... and concentrate on your body fat % instead. It's a complicated method of measurement unless you have a set of electronic scales to help you out. There is a sliding scale of body fat % for your age by reason that as you age you ought to carry a higher % of body fat to provide additional energy to help your body fight through any aging illnesses.. For whatever the reason most of us naturally get a higher body fat % as we age anyway because of lowered testosterone levels and high % of oestrogen. Obviously if you are a hard gainer your body fat will be low... but that's anther problem entirely... My ideal body fat% is down around 14%. For visible abs a dude needs about 8% body fat... and whilst Ive been that low in the past (as a young bloke) Ive almost starved myself to death get there... it's unhealthy for me... that is for my body. We each are individual, so you need to work out what is right for your body. As a general rule, weight is irrelevant because of the weight of muscle compared to fat... that's why I look at measuring body fat. When I say I am 12kg off my ideal weight.. that is in relation to my muscle mass and targeting an ideal body fat for me of around 14%.Women naturally have higher body fat contents by reason of the additional oestrogen. It is unrealistic to expect a healthy athletic woman to have as low a body fat content as a healthy athletic man. Women simply do not have enough natural testosterone in their bodies to build that ratio of muscle to fat... plus.. they really have to have a wonderful set of tits and a cute shapely arse... which requires fat... Fat is truly beautiful in all the right places... plus it makes meat taste great. :pHugsStalky

I agree... it depends on how your body carries the excess. I am pretty lean, but if I put on weight it goes straight to my penis. This isn't a bad thing. But if I was to put it on around the stomach, and started hanging my gut over my belt, I reckon girls would be less enthusiastic about my penchant for schweineshaxe. . Same goes for girls... proportion is important... I don't know how you make all that ice cream go to your breasts, but I know what to do if I smear it on there ;)

It is approximately 8 kgs to one dress size (for women) most of the time this sneaks up and then before you know it, your clothes dont fit. Last week they were only a little snug. I have a voluptuos, round body type so tend to put it on evenly and loose it evenly. 8kgs either way is barely noticeable by others. Only me.

The beer takes the fat out of my penis and wraps it around my belly, it's just not fair! haha

"is there an allowable weight gain/loss above or below our ideal weight that makes us unacceptably out of shape?" it's never 'unacceptable' if you're prepared to accept yourself

I love the whole idea of fat going straight around my penis... this morning I was just trying to appreciate what that might be like by practicing with a sliver of bacon. :p Not bad jeano... but wrapping a pair of ta~tas around them... or hey... a pair of bum cheeks .... these all just work better than bacon... :pHUgsStalky

I have never been particularly fussed about how much fat I have, so long as I am healthy. I could gain 50 kilos of fat and wouldnt care, as long as I gained strength to match and kept my healthy heart.

You know you need to lose a little weight around the middle?
