The golden rule.

January 28 2012

Every major religion and school of philosphy have a version of the golden rule as the central focus of their ethics. Six hundred years before Jesus, the Greek philosopher, Pittacus, wrote, "Do not to your neighbour what you would take ill from him." K'ung-fu-tzu (Confuscious to Westerners) wrote, "Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself." The Wiccan Rede states, "an' it harms none, do as ye will." I am not a religious person but I am an ethical one. I do not believe the things written in the bible were trully the words of God but I do believe in treating others in the manner I would expect to be treated. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Bareing this in mind, could someone explain to me why there are still so many arrogant, self righteous, hypocrites trying to impose their own beliefs on us? The Gay Marriage topic is particularly divisive and it shouldn't be. Why are people with different sexual orientations to what is called normal looked upon as being evil?

Thou shalt not kill is also another beauty. I draw the line at coveting my neighbour's wife though. She's simply irresistable. Listening to the Australian Open tennis final is making me horny. Hugs Stalky

...start with the Bronze Rule and work our way up? | I'd rather be an over-achiever with lower expectations than totally fuck up trying to achieve perfection.

All that is...is all that is. And thats all there is, everything. There is nothing else or it would be called - All that is, plus what's outside. . The is-ness of it all.

...and this is only a personal opinion   But deep down we all seem to want to know answers to the be questions, why we are here and what it's all about and least at some part of our lives.   I think religion is an attempt to put it into a framework that some people find it easy to cope with life. That there is something out there and that it look out for us and here are the rules... easy peazy. And there is nothing wrong with that if it helps you get through life. But religion is man made, not divine and is fallible. It has problems adapting and when it becomes challenged people panic because they are faced with the possibility that their belief is wrong and that no one is tending the pilot light. People will defend the un-defendable to protect their belief. It's better to be in the tent pissing out than outside pissing in.   >   ... oh and my golden rule is never do anything you're not prepared to explain to an emergency department nurse.

Jennylee - not everyone has the same moral and ethical rules as you do. As for the different sexual orientations being looked down upon, many many people are afraid of what they do not know.

I am not against gay people but why do they want to get married to pronounce their love for each other if marriage is not about love.

we are all equal...even with , and despite our differences...gay, straight, trans, bi or undecided...it doesnt matter... these people are only after recognition...from society...from family...and from lawmakers and administrators... the 'marriage' they seek, and which is denied more often than not....is the legality of the union...and whether or not it has any value as an institution to others..... these people are just like the rest of us here...have all the same hopes, dreams and aspirations....they just stand beside someone of the same sex....so what? give us all what we are asking for, and give these people a little dignity and allow them access to 'marriage'....give them the same property rights, the same protection, the same access to facilities and support that older 'straight' married couples have access to in retirement etc......that gays, or transgenders...or anyone....are discriminated against....is not acceptible.... not in 2012.

....but the gay marriage aspect is only one example of the hypocritical judgemental attitudes I'm against. Remember in "From Russia, With Love" there was a particularly nasty KGB agent who was portrayed as a lesbian to make her seem more evil. In "Double Impact", the assasin was a lesbian. In an episode of CSI, the victim and murderer were swingers and it was portrayed as very seedy. "Law And Order" had a similarly themed episode. We are not evil people and our chosen lifestyle doesn't make us such.
