Thailand Somewhere named Koh Samui
May 25 2014
Anyway, I've never been in this situation before, but I find I am suddenly able to go somewhere cheap but exotic (compared to Sydney) to live for a while, work up a pretty decent tan and do this so long as the place has a decent broadband connection.
Has anyone been to Koh Samui? I've never heard of it before... but there seems to be reasonable accommodation there in the high country for around $30 a night, lmfao... I'm thinking that it is possible to FIFO well scheduled client meetings.... and still operate my small business remotely, as I do now, but with increased distance. I suppose there's no reason why I couldn't also provide advice in my new location, expanding my client base.
So, Koh Samui? Has anyone been there?
If you could work from anywhere, what location would you choose?

not to Koh Samui in particular. I have heard it is beautiful and a good couples destination. Friends of mine went there and they went back and are considering it every year. I love the rest of Thailand what I have seen of it and Aussies are well received there. Good Luck :)
I like to use Trip Advisor as a good honest reference as there is good professional and traveller feeback.Smilingwithfun

Is a bit unstable politically atm....visas can be a problem, you need to renew after six months I think....leave and go back....if you like mountains,Ubud in Bali is a great place....and there are small village where you can rent very cheaply...visa situation similar to Thailand xx Q

But I'm not too sure about quality of internet connections. Hmm then again you might only need slow internet for emails as there'd be no real need for downloading porn - you can source that content down the road at one of the bars :)

There's absolutely no problem in Thailand due to the coup bars close at 10 is all.
You can rent a nice room walk to the beach around bophut for $15/day add $60/mth for motorbike and food as little as $10/day
Get a multiple entry business visa before you go and you can stay 90days at a stretch for 15mths.
Superfast reliable internet is $45/mth
Friend us and let us know if you come over we love to party

I have been and its an amazing island. It is big enough that there is everything you need and you are also very close to the Full Moon party! You should definitely go.

Totally agree frednmary. A coup in Thailand is not like elsewhere. Apart from seeing some military in the streets it is business as usual. If anything bangkok and the rest of thailand is safer now than before, because the military are policing the streets. Little do many know but some of the police are aligned to one side of politics and hence why there were problems caused by one political side that were blatantly ignored by the police. Never a safer time to go. The only issue is the curfew hours but this will most likely be tapered off over time, particularly in the tourist areas of PHUKET, Koh samui and pattaya. My advise is go to Thailand and don't worry about the coup.

We agree with Exotic don't worry about the coup it was the same 10years ago you will have your dreams come true in Bangkok & Pattaya the people are wonderful, this is the better time to go the hotels will be cheaper there wont be as many tourists You can get to Koh Samui from Phuket or Koh Samet from Bangkok but as a single man I would try Pattaya walking street this is earth shattering have fun,,,,,,,,

A military coup in Bangkok was always going to be on.. They have a history of coups 'its a way of life over there.
Besides ' Koh Sumui is a world away from Bangkok and I believe it would be business as usual in Phuket , Pattaya etc , ' except for the 10pm curfew..apart from that ? all good...
This would not stop me from going there..gazpacho

Thanks Guys. I appreciate the advice. My internet needs are a bit higher than email. I need to VPN. I'm thinking I can trial it for a month, while the weather is crap here in Sydney... and make up my mind from there.
Frednmary, I owe you dinner.
Woohoo!

Close friends of mine lived on Koh Samui for a few years...he was a GM of a resort there, she did a lot of nothing at that time.
They both loved it when the Italians arrived ( it is a very popular Island for Europeans)...they loved to swim in the pools but hated to lay in the sun in wet bathers so would strip naked by the pool and pop on dry togs.
This couple now live in Phuket...politiical problems only effect Bangkok.
Most ex-pats living in Thailand do a visa run when required to Singapore...well they try to tell me their shopping trips are visa runs.scubaboy69

I've spent a few months in Jomtien and, amongst the tourists, it was mostly single guys of all ages, English couples and Russian families. Loved the locals but I left wondering where the single ladies from Europe holiday or live in Thailand? Koh Samui? Phuket?

I am not sure if this is still relevant or not, but any unrest in Bangkok RARELY makes a blip on the Islands…it is like saying there is unrest and protests in Sydney, so do not travel to Tasmania.
Koh Samui is amazing, relaxed, laid back and bit more of a a hippy vibe to it than say Phuket. Lovely food, and nightlife (which is always great in Thailand) The beaches are 4000% better than Phuket, the bar girls less aggressive and not so many.
Overall it is our favourite place to travel to relax.
We travel up to 5 times a year across the world….not much beats Koh Samui IMOtotallygenuine

I was last there in 2012 Sept stayed there for a month....mostly Europeans, Russians and English...the place is mainly for couples though (well I think so anyway) but we were lucky enough to hook up with the Russian girls (from Galaxy strippers) from the start of our trip. Mind you having blown 20k (between me and my mate) within that month (nothing on the girls) we had a blast it's pretty cheap there as well. I think peak season starts in Nov so prices with accommodation double. Our next trips to Koh Samui is in planning already for this season can't wait.
