Taro.....do you like it? Do you get any allergy from eating it?

February 19 2014

Yes I am here to talk about food this time :-) hopefully this would bring out the foodies to share their love for food :-) Taro is one of the popular vegetables used in Asian cooking and cuisine, especially in the south east Asia region. I grew up eating taro made in many styles of cooking......fried fish & taro soup; deep fried taro duck; sweet mashed taro; sugar coated taro bars; steamed taro; and many more to list. I love eating taro because of its starchy taste and its yummy smell when it is freshly cooked and served hot. Hmmmm.......the smell of it is heaven! It is nothing new that I love eating taro, as an Asian, but I am interested to know how many of the non-Asian RHPers are there who have actually tried and like eating taro too? For those who don't like it or have never had it, why is that? Is it because of the culture different, hence different eating habit? For people who have had taro, do you get any allergy from eating it? Although I have used the term "foodie" above, I don't mean only food lovers to contribute to this Thread. Everyone is welcome to share their love of Asian food, especially taro lol and your contribution would be well appreciated :-) - Posted from rhpmobile

I've had Taro because I love S.E. Asian food . It's also widely used in the Islands (Fiji , etc). I wouldn't say that I've necessarily found Taro to be the Star of a dish , but it's OK . Thanks for the Topic SweetGem . As you know , I love cooking ;) I'm also quite partial to a good Root (vegetable)... GG♒️ - Posted from rhpmobile

I love Food! I Love Asian Food More! I have a weakness for Japanese & Korean Food even more! I would die happy if I could eat it for every meal every day until the day I die. Having moved from a small town where there were no Asian foods available other than Thai I found heaven when I moved to the GC. A block from my appartment there is a whole block of Asian food restaurants and eat out places. Although I have never hear of Taro? What is it? Knowing my love of Asain food I have most likely already eaten it and had no idea what it was lol Taby xx

My fave is the taro ice-cream! I have made taro cake from my mom's recipe before. Its awesome! Some people find it a bit strange though, eating a purple cake.

Quoting 'MisterGreen' Thanks for the Topic SweetGem . As you know , I love cooking ;) I'm also quite partial to a good Root (vegetable)... GG♒️ - Posted from rhpmobile Thanks MisterGreen for liking this topic :-) I love cooking too and love my food lol The texture of taro is very different to potato, so it is understandable that not many foodies would find it a star of a dish :-)

Quoting 'Taby_Daring'Although I have never hear of Taro? What is it? Knowing my love of Asain food I have most likely already eaten it and had no idea what it was lol Taby xx Taro is a type of yam and is a root vegetable. Its skin colour is light-dark brown, its flesh is white base with purple strips run all over it when still raw, but it turns light purple colour when is cooked. It is indeed one of the popular and expensive vegetables consumed in South East Asia :-) If you have time, Google it and you will know what it's like :-) Thanks for posting and my apologies for the late response as I don't log in via my laptop often, and I can't find this Thread when log in via my phone :-)

Not fussed on taro or most other varieties of that type of vegetables. There are much better tasting vegies like Bok Choy in all its varieties.
