Sinead's letter as it appeared in the Guardian I didn't think she came across as the moral police at all. I felt she came across as a wise woman who had walked the path previously and was trying to share her knowledge with a young artist coming behind her.- Posted from rhpmobile

At least somebody is trying to offer Miley some decent advice. Pity she doesn't want to take it. I guess we all must learn from our own mistakes!

While I don't agree with everything that Sinead said in her letter, in looking at it overall I don't think she was trying to be the 'moral police'. She even praised Miley and said that she had talent (something I definitely don't agree with). And Miley's reaction - particularly in pointing out and making fun of Sinead's mental health struggles - was immature and offensive, not just to Sinead but to all people with mental illness. She's making herself come across as a spoilt, ignorant little brat who simply throws insults anyone who takes issue with her. And she would do well to actually heed some of the advice that Sinead gave her. I hope Sinead does take legal action against her, and Miley starts to learn that winning the sperm war and having bald labia doesn't make her as special as she thinks she is.

I dont think its right for women to be told that they "should" act in any particular way because they are women or (worse still) "precious young ladies" in O'connor's words. I accept that this means that women may act in a way that I don't like - they may choose to wear a hijab or to simulate sex in a flesh coloured stage costume - but that is the cost of any freedom. Rather than imparting some quiet advice, O'connor published her letter. In doing so she appointed herself the arbiter of "appropriate behaviour", hence my reference to "moral policing", and she also opened her own conduct up to scrutiny. I believe that Cyrus, despite her youth, knows precisely what she is doing and is doing it very well. If I am wrong and she is becoming unhinged as o'connor suggests, then a publicity stunt like the open letter will merely add more fuel to the fire.

One further thing - based on the comments and posts made by Cyrus that I have seen, there are no prospects of a successful legal claim.

I've no doubt that's what Cyrus has been up to mister green but hadn't thought about the possibility of the same being true of O'connor on account of her preachy form. Does she have a new album?

I thought Sinead's letter to Miley was open & honest, & to me, seemed to genuinely come from the heart of a woman who wanted to reach out to somebody who was starting off in the industry, which she herself has been a part of for over 20 years. Sinead has witnessed the exploitation of young women in the music industry first-hand. She is reaching out to Miley, who is being adored at every level at the moment, & trying to make her see past the illusion which has been put up around her. Young women, and in this case Miley, are used & exploited & then tossed aside when their moment in the sun has passed. Miley's 'advisors' should be fired, she does need to have people around her who are looking out for her & only her. She is a role model & she is somebody millions of young girls are imitating. Girls as young as 5 & 6 are aware of their diets, their body shapes & are imitating Miley & others her age. Yes, Miley is now legally an adult & she has every right to be an adult, but I do believe that being in the public eye, raking in millions of dollars from the general public & being adored by loyal fans also brings responsibility. This responsibility is by setting an example for those who are younger & are more vulnerable than her. She is in a position where she holds a power that could make people take notice & if she refused to be manipulated & refused to be exploited or play up as a sex object, others would follow. Yes, all young women should enjoy themselves, be that sex object if they want to be, explore themselves & so on, but in this case you can't have both sides of the coin. Only yesterday, a report was televised saying that 4 out of 5 women in their early 20's are unhappy with their bodies & themselves & are finding they are trying to live up to ideals, that are at time unattainable, though which are being told to them to be the new norm. 4 out of 5!! this is a ridiculous & alarming high number & something which needs to be addressed. for Miley to turn around & 'diss' Sinead with the comments she made shows how young Miley still is, but it also highlights the need for education to rid the still, far too common ignorance, many people have towards mental illness. there is still a stigma, still the need for funds to be seriously channelled towards the care of people who are suffering, still the need for funding for more medical staff to be made available to the general public, the ones who don't have access to private health insurance. mental illness is becoming more & more prevalent in today's society. more & more people are finding they are needing to seek help or information on how to help a loved one. this one example of the way Miley is being exploited & in turn influencing the decision being made by many of her young female fans, is leading to the isolation, depression & other things young women are experiencing today & finding themselves seeking help for. mental illness isn't a dark, mysterious evil to run away from, it is as normal & as real as a broken limb, the only difference is the break is not always visible to the naked eye. mental illness can be treated, with care & compassion & people can & do live full & normal lives whilst 'suffering'. left untreated though, the effects can and are life-threatening. as a modern & progressive race, we need to address this also & make changes now. reading over what I have just written, I feel I am the one who is all preachy now. I don't mean to be, but perhaps it's my age, perhaps I do remember a simpler time. perhaps I am genuinely worried about the young women & adolescent girls who are close to me personally & who I am watching try to navigate their way through a world I didn't have to face until many years later. some of them I am genuinely fearful for. here endeth the sermon mrs funky

It's like Madonna and Britney Spears kissing . You get an old Star and a new Star together and it creates Publicity and then you can sell more Albums . Without this Publicity / Controversy these "Stars" don't have anything to Sell ... GG♒️- Posted from rhpmobile

I'm curious Bathsheba, did you read the actual letter or was your reaction from the media hype that came after? Sinead did not at any time set herself up as being the moral judge, nor imply that she hadn't made mistakes in her own life and career. Sometimes having walked a path previously enables a person to share some of the pitfalls that might be encountered along the way......that's not judgement, that's knowledge and wisdom. Admittedly, there are always those that manage to come off sounding judgmental no matter how they phrase something. - Posted from rhpmobile

My views are not as a result of being 'conservative' with respect to Miley's sexualised image and behaviour. I really couldn't give a shit what she does with her body, how much she twerks it, flaunts it, or how many construction tools she licks. In that respect, as I said, I didn't agree with everything that Sinead said, e.g. about your body being only for you and your boyfriend. And anyway, it's not like nearly-naked pop starlets are a rare thing these days, it's actually getting pretty boring. My main issues with Miley are her other behaviours- which include appropriating black culture with origins in underprivelege for her personal gain, while not giving a shit about those that she is exploiting from her very priveleged position, and in Sinead's case, the use of her mental health struggles against her; basically very publically making fun of her illness and attempts to get help. In doing that, Miley is showing a great level of immaturity, arrogance, and ignorance. To me, she comes across as nothing but just another spoiled child born into privelege, who's always had everything her own way and no boundaries ever set for her. Hopefully she will learn some lessons, and since she's obviously not open to taking any advice and thinks she knows it all, she'll be learning them the hard way. She may even end up needing help for the very thing that she mocked and made fun of, and learn first hand just what it's like.

It's the Information Age and children are going to be exposed to things that parents might not want them to see - people not living in accordance with their family's values, people engaging in unhealthy behaviour, people behaving in a way that might be confusing and (shock horror) women behaving sexually. The parental role is to regulate what they see and, to the extent that they see things that perhaps they shouldnt, to educate them as to what healthy/appropriate conduct is and to point them in the direction of great role models. It is not a parent's role, or anyone else's, to tell other people how they 'should' behave. Being of the opinion that it is ok for one woman to tell another how she ought to behave, is being conservative. I appreciate that some feel that oconnor was merely trying to come to Cyrus's aid, however, in my opinion, heartfelt and sincere advice would not have been published in an open forum.
