In this case it would just be another one of those psychological addictions rather than physiological addictions that was being treated and maybe pampered a bit without looking at the real problems. | Tiger Woods...sorry, but I think "addiction" is just a cop out, unless he is being treated for being an asshole with too much money and everything in the world that anyone could want. He just lost the plot and decided he could take advantage of everyone and everything around him...then threw a little tantrum when he got caught out. Nice...and right back on the golf circuit within a few months. Nike did take the "Just Do It" logo of his hat though....his says "I Did It". | Although...if they do start treating this as an addiction and offer those open door 12 step programs, sign me up. I would probably be the first one to attend a meeting! | Can you imagine...just sitting there waiting for an attractive woman to say "Hi, my name is Sinful Sindee and I am addicted to sex", then admits that she is powerless and starts to tell her story? I know who I would be asking if she wanted to have a drink after the meeting. Forget the steps, let's take the elevator... | ...recovery is for quitters!

Sexual addiction is a psychological condition in which an individual has a severe struggle in managing his or her sexual behavior. Some sexologists prefer to call the condition sexual dependency or sexual compulsivity. The existence of the condition is not universally accepted and its etiology, nature and validity is the subject of continuing debate. Proponents of the concept have offered varying descriptions and models of the putative condition. Some proponents offer an addiction model, which they define by analogy to substance addiction; while others offer lack-of-control models, which refer to it as "sexual compulsivity" and offer definitions based on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Thanks Wikipedia Generally, a person with a sex addiction gains little satisfaction from the sexual activity and forms no emotional bond with his or her sex partners. In addition, the problem of sex addiction often leads to feelings of guilt and shame. (Most older catholics would have experienced this even if they only rooted once a month) A sex addict also feels a lack of control over the behavior, despite negative consequences (financial, health, social, and emotional). Thanks Medicinenet, I've just decided I do not have an addiction! There's a lot of info for a disputed condition. I have certainly known people who could and would fuck everyone they met but hell, they seemed to enjoy it. . . . .maybe they were lying???? Think it could be fun to lose control and have a bit more sexual compulsivity. Hey Stalky, save a seat for me at the SAA meetings, they might not get much satisfaction but hey, its a sure thing we'll get a root! Hell we might even get a gang bang! WILD

I hate to sound jaded, but when Tiger Woods or Jesse James claim sex addiction as a defence when they get caught cheating on their spouses, I get a little bit skeptical. This is not a judgement about cheating, so please don't read it as such. It is a judgement about famous people lacking accountability. On the other hand, I did see a TV special once about a woman in England who had an aneurism, or something brain related, and was in a coma. When she awoke, she had a brand new sex compulsion. She would leave the house to go to the grocery, and instead pick up strangers for sex. It was pretty intense. Her husband had to go looking for her everytime she was gone for more than 20 minutes. So, Sexual compulsions are real, just not in the case of Tiger Woods.

When david duchovny was outed as an addict, someone i know who knows him and his wife told me that in most cases Sex Addiction in celebs is just a PR tool to deal with someone who gets caught cheating. . i think all the tabloid and celeb stuff is probably hurting a lot of people who are genuine sufferers.

Its is when your behavior starts to have a negative impact on your life. As WildTassieGypsy pointed out it is not untill " negative consequences (financial, health, social, and emotional)." that it can be vaguely termed an addiction. For Tiger it most defiantly did. If I had the luck to play with all those women I would not be considered a addict. WildTassieGypsy I do not agree with wiki in calling it an addiction. OCD is a mental illness, that manifests its self in a wide variety of behaviors. Are compulsive hand washers call addicts? Tiger, as far as I know, does not have OCD and is not mentally ill. fionabee "Sex addiction?.....it works for me. lol" works for me too.... :)

I can't defend what wikipedia prints, and yes OCD is a mental illness that can have very negative impacts for people affected. No argument there. Cheers WTG

Just a comment here...but there is a huge difference between OCD and anything that would be classified as a disease. The first group, and there are several...are disorders that are generally brought on by stimuli to the mind and conceptualized by the individual as right or wrong behaviours such as gambling, excessive spending, hording and cleanliness are amongst them. Some may have a more deep seeded phsychological basis, but generally not and they are easily identified. It has become far too easy to class irresponsible behaviour as an OCD and go flying off to the latest treatment centre to hang out until the dust settles...and particularly if you are a high profile personality. | The second group, a disease...has it's foundations in the physiological funtion or dysfuntion of the body and is what separates the true alcoholic from even a heavy social drinker. Addiction too, say in the case of heroin, will cause preeminant changes in the physiology of the body. Interestingly enough...both heroin and alcohol create and leave deposits of tetrahydrolsoqulnoline (THIQ) in the brain that never really do dissipate. This substance gets plugged into endorphin receptors as the kidneys and liver can no longer process acetylaldehyde in the alcoholic...and in the heroin addict is a direct byproduct of substance breakdown. This compound is a sedative so powerful that is has no known or safe use even as an anesthetic by a skilled professional. | Mental diseases also have a true physiological base, such as chronic suicidal depression or more severe forms of bi-polar syndrome ...short form, a dysfunction in the nuero-recptors of the brain and generally centred around a balance of seratonin passing appropriately and hence the use of the SSRI medications in combination with mild sedatives and councilling. These...generally do have some very deep seeded phsychological issues as well and are difficult to treat and perhaps nearly impossible to completely cure. | OCD...why do you think casinos are glamourous? Glitzy lights and you never really know what time of day it is once you are there. Subliminal messaging...illegal in some forms of advertising yet perfectly acceptable in this one. Sex addition...yes, maybe an over active thryoid or over production of testosterone but those would be signals that something else was really wrong with a primary physiological function of the body and easily diagnosed. | Sorry...it's a cop out. OCD did not make me eat the cold pizza in the fridge this morning and as for sexual OCD...do you remember what it was like to be a teenager? Hell, I turn into a sex addict just walking around the streets of Melbourne during the Open...I just don't jump on every hot chick I see! | There...all done. And in my very humble opinion, Tiger Woods is still just an asshole!
