Rodriguez

April 06 2010

I saw him play to a jamn packed crowd at the Basement last night. The rumours that he sang "thanks for your time and yOu can thank me for mine" and then shot himself on stage are false. He does however only have three fingers which makes playing guitar more challenging but he plays beautifully and his voice is completely recogniseable. He was lead out to stage because he's now as blind as a bat.... while he has his back turned tuning up... some of the less reverent youngsters yelled things like " turn him around this way"... lol.. but old Rodriguez shared nothing but love and beautiful music. What a graceful soul. He played all our favourites. He wore the same hat that he wore the last time I saw him which was in 1981.... With each song all those colours to my dreams kept flooding back. What a beautiful night! So..... how was Easter for you? Hugs Stalky

Beautiful dreams are right, I discovered Rodriguez way back when I was a baby of 19, even today his sound makes me chill n smile and think of long nights on the beach with a fire burning... memories Good for you for catching him, he played over here last summer and I cry that I heard AFTER the event. Time to go pop a CD on I think Dev xxx

We heard he died down in Mexico years and years ago, Then found out 3-4 years ago that he is still alive, he was just working some menial job until he was re-discovered. When he actually dies, no one will believe it. :) Hugh.

Back in 1972 Rodriguez released an album called "cold fact". It was too controversial for USA audience and rodriguez didn't do himself any favours by playing entire gigs wearing a big floppy hat and turning his back to the audience the whole time... so his album went nowhere and his songs got no air time. The album is a cracker though and people here learnt about it through word of mouth... it got no airtime here so the only way to hear it was if someone you knew was playing it... Through the 1970's his fame grew in this underground Market but Rodriguez had basically turned back to labouring in Detroit.... I heard his music in highschool in the 70's and so apparently did these other Rhp members. He was invited to play in Australia and toured in 1979 and 1981. I saw him in 1981... but then he disapeared for 20 years. He said he was still labouring all this time.... unaware of the cult following in Sth Africa.. where his album was selling on Cd .. Everyone thought he was dead and nobody was sending him the royalty cheque. Lol. Eventually a fan from Sth Africa tracked him down and in the late 1990's he did a gig there. He's never been invited to play a concert in the USA but here his music is pure gold. I played it to my kids and they play it to their friends... there's a whole new generation of people singing "I wonder". Hugs Stalky
