coke used to come in bottles and worth something when you returned them ? you used to drink water from the hose? when you could play out on the street till almost dark and your parents didnt even worry? you actually knew and talked to your neighbours?

My friend and I bought a big dodge for $50. Fit four of us across the front seat. A packet of cigarettes cost 45cents as did a hamburger. A crate of long necks (beer) cost $5 and you got a dollar back on the wooden crate full of empties. We all saved our crates and emties and then had a huge party every six months. The age limit at the pub was 21 but I used to sneak in at 15. TV was black and white and there was only one channel.

There was no computers, let alone the internet. No mobile phones. All telephone calls went through the exchange. It was safe to hitchhike. The only std's were ghonnoria and syphalis, herpes was only just beginning and AIDs had not yet come out of Africa.

when the most 'out there' thing at school was to smoke, wear an earring and have your shirt out. Chasing girls and sneeking a kiss. holding hands. scribing in trees xx loves xx Sharing you lunch with your girl. Street clothes day where the girls would head home and breaks and change clothes! SMoking in the middle of the oval. fights were fair. one on one. everyone watched and if someone else tried to stack the odds by joining in he got the shit belted out of him. No knives, glassings, no pack fights. The Police would give you a clip 'round the ear and send you home. Playing from sun up to sun down and parents weren't worried about where you were. Doubling on a push bike down a step hill and the mate you were doubling steered. Roller skating every Sat night. Shagging at the drive in n fogging up all the windows.

Delivered milk to the door every morning in glass bottles. Sorry, showing my age here but I also remember pounds shillings and pence. TV was black and white and there was one channel. No need to change it Focus. There was no choice. There was no computers, no internet and our telephone calls went through and exchange with the operator listening in. I remember the attendant used to come out at the service station and clean the windscreen while putting petrol in the car.

Now come on Methuselah. Women have been emancipated for many more years than you have been alive. The Matrimonial Properties Act came into being in 1958. Prior to that women could not own property and even if they went to work, thier wages were legally that of thier husbands. Gone are the bad old days of being under the thumb and having no other choice but to stay in an emtionallyl or physically abusive situation because you were married. For better or for worse. Lets not get carried away here gentlemen. Some of the good old days were not so good. There was no dish washers, no vacuum cleaners, microwaves or automatic washing machines. The toilet was out the back and stunk in summer. A woman did stay home but it was certainly not luxury. The household chores were long and arduos. There was not contraception and no such thing as rape in marriage. It was a mans right to have sex with his wife, she had a child every year and many died young through complications arising from childbirth. Yep. Life sure was fun for a woman back then!

Remember thinking that, when all men had the same hair cut the furore over the first mini skirt illegal street marches in Brisbane when you could go into a school ground on a weekend with your mates to play footy or cricket houses only cost about 2 and half times your annual salary Hey Charger adds Milky Bar Kid Wagon Wheels Sunny Boys late night shopping first started when Cabramatta was a mainly European based society kids respected their elders when skinny kids were the norm when hot chicken meal was reserved for Sundays when take away was fish and chips or chinese when Gerry Harvey and his blonde offsider sang "We're gunna get ya" after being rissoled from Norman Ross (by the way where are they now? Guess he got em) Granville train disaster when afternoon delight was a chocolate bar smoke filled bars and restaurants when a gentleman gave up his seat for a lady on a train or bus Oh the memories and what will be remembering in another 30 years

When the only 'porn' about was National Geo, and Playboy. The russian girl in the red bikini. Festival Hall (Brisbane), Cloudland. '74 Floods. "chooper" bicyles. The first BMX bikes. The only sandshoes ware Dunlop Volleys. Squash courts in every suburb. Getting "the cane" at school. Fire crackers. Public Phones that had A and B buttons. 20c worth of lollies was a HUGE bag full. No helmets for bicyles. My first car - a 1970 Escort 1100 two door. Panel vans. Stickers that said "don't laugh your daugher may be inside" (when you saw a panel van rocking); "if this van's rocking, don't bother knocking". The only diest soft drink was TAB (with only one calorie). Going to Bribie Island was considered "going overseas". When you started your apprenticeship after year 10.

remember when you could have a few beers at the pub and drive home without fear of a booze bus when you could fly over seas without fear of being blown up you could smuggle drugs out of southeast asia easier lees security you could walk into a chemist and buy what you wanted without feeling like a criminal as the indian security guard gave you the once over on the way out remember when you could buy a house for less than $100.000
