We could write a novel on this but to keep it brief. The opera CARMEN has been cancelled in WA due to Healthway sponsorship concerns over the setting within a tobacco factory. Films depicting smoking are still being shown. Is Romeo and Juliet next because of teenage suicide? What about Operas/films/plays that contain alcohol drinking or extramarital sexual activities? We are non smokers and believe money would be better spent subsidising nicotine patches. Your thoughts (before the nanny state bans that)

The idea that Carmen promotes smoking is so ludicrous and new that I can’t find any reference to it having been made before. We definitely wouldn't want impressionable young women thinking working in a 19th century Spanish cigarette factory is a glamorous occupation. These social engineers are also involved in removing the cigarette from history. There are now quite a few examples of anti-smokers re-writing history a là tyranny. For example, concerning a commemorative stamp issue, the US Post Office authorized the airbrushing out of a cigarette dangling from James Dean’s lips. The same was done with Black American blues guitarist Robert Johnson and with artist Jackson Pollock. The French Post Office did similarly with philosopher Andre Malraux (and Jean-Paul Satre). Columbia Records has removed a cigarette Paul Simon was holding to his lips for the CD cover of the retrospective of Simon and Garfunkel titled “Old Friends.” A cigarette was airbrushed out from the hand of a cast member for the cover of the 25th Anniversary CD of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. A cigarette in Paul McCartney’s right hand has been removed from the cover of the album “Abbey Road.” Can you imagine how many head nodding moronic discussions went into taking this ground breaking decisions? Lookout Les Miserables wil be next as it could be said that it encourages political violence and sedition

From what I hear it wasn't cancelled at the sponsor's request, but the organizer out of "respect for the sponsor". Well I'm not sure all this controversy around it is doing either of them any favours! NN xx - Posted from rhpmobile

I feel a little sorry for wa opera they probably need all the sponsor money they can get,but that's where it ends. But i am with you aristippusx2, Healthway should put their money where their mouth is and give it to cancer research or something instead of bullying an opera company

NudieRudie2's comments struck a chord (sorry for not re-quoting, but 'reply with quote' is not working for me today). I've just finished re-reading 1984, and the examples that Nudie gave of removing cigarettes from history could have come straight out of it. Winston Smith's job at the Ministry of Truth was revisionism... rewriting past newspaper articles so that the historical record always supported the current party line. Scary stuff. Much love, Elle xx

If the play was good enough to make it on tisket sales alone, then there would be no problem. Its not like it has been banned. A financial sponsor has an agenda to push... SHOCK....HORROR.

I was in Istanbul a few years ago. I turned on the tv while I got ready to go to bed and there was an eighties movie, I can't remember which one, Every now and again, I'd. See this flower moving across the screen. It took me a couple of scenes to realise the flower was covering the cigarettes being smoked. Makes plain packaging seem tame.

I like your comments nudierudie. Its a pity most people don't know what sedition is these days. But lets face it , we already are in 1984
