Nerdlove

February 20 2013

So, it got kinda fashionable to be into nerds and geeks (until those freakin' hipstas ruined everything by stealing the bad fashion and thick rimmed glasses). This isn't about why you love them, though. What are *your* nerdiest, geekiest, characteristics? (shameless self promotion encouraged)- Posted from rhpmobile

Gawd where do we start here? Mr Otori works in a very geeky profession and until recently I (Ms Otori) was a stats-nerd research assistant for my local university (by that I mean I compiled statistics databases and ran stats tests, which I loved doing). We are massive tech geeks (always need to have or to know about the latest gadgets) but I think our geekiest characteristic is our gaming hobbies. I can easily sink a whole weekend's worth of time into Minecraft to make sure I have my building creation just right. He's been going gaga over the Sim City 5 beta weekends. I squealed with delight when opening my Portal 2 Plush Turret (which says turret dialogue when you walk past) on Christmas Day. I end up creating a rich personal background story for all of my MMORPG characters (and yes I Role Play them from time to time, depending on the kind of guild I join). Shut up, it's creative. We love playing games together, and having mates bring their PC's over for a LAN. We do also play the odd game of Heroquest (an RP board game).I think being a geek/nerd is all about not giving a damn what others think about your interests. So we'd rather be having pizza and fighting imaginary orcs and zombies in a board game with friends on a Friday night rather than going out to poorly-lit, ultra-loud night clubs with overpriced drinks. We're having fun.

My wife's friends only talk to me when they have it issues and then they ask for "Sheldon" (Vixen's pet name for me) Xmas b'day presents over last several years included: A complete doctor who figurine collection. Sonic screwdriver wii remote. Boxes of expensive wood and wire puzzles that are too easy to figure out and anything else from the games shop. When we had the house fire 18 months ago we lost at least 25k in computers etc. New house has over 3km of smart wiring in it. Only recently gave away a half a dozen 80l crates of roleplayng and trading card related stuff. Still have just as much in storage as well as thousands of scifi fantasy books. I mostly read electronically now and ebook collection is over 30,000 individual titles. Oh and redish hair with glasses. Enough said. Mark- Posted from rhpmobile

For anyone that isn't in their 20s I think there is a few things that you have to know or have done to really classify yourself as a nerd. Know what a C64 is and still remember with fondness the tape loader. Extra points if you had a 1541 disk drive or know what a Vic-20 is. You get ultra high points if you knew how to set up the display one at Kmart to repeat a line over and over Know the colour of the basic dungeons and dragons set, know what a d-20 is and for bonus points if your elf or magic user character was real you would have done her You can remember watching revenge of the nerds and loved it when they "found bush". You blew a large amount of time in the arcades because computer games just weren't the same. Of course, you hate jar jar binks and are disappointed with the new Star Wars films. Just a few hard core nerd points....I'm sure there are more but just got to work :)- Posted from rhpmobile

I used to be right into Science when I was in high school and as an undergrad. I loved it all and it was even something I considered a pass time/hobby. But then doing my thesis kind of sucked all my enthusiasm for doing science dry. So I don't know where that puts me now. I spend more time doing 'jockish' things than 'nerdish' things but I try not to dwell on which camp I fall into. I can easily go from watching footy to watching anime (not it's not real anime if it was on CheezTV IMO).

Firstly I reckon this forums is going to be the downfall of us all lol or the anti wingman so to speak. Okay I love to read comic books and graphic novels. I am a devoted batman fan, so much so that I hated the dark night and refused to watch the last installment as I found all the characters to be way off! I still get into heated discussions about it with mates, who I think bring up the subject just to see me go off on a tangent. I love my FPS on either xbox or pc. As well as many other games (of course arkham asylum, and arkham city, and skyrim) The only real books I manage to read are strength training anatomy books, kinesiology books and of course all my forced uni books. I enjoy reading current research articles on hypertrophy and human performance effects from hormones, or training methods. When it comes to purchasing technology, I manage to baffle the salesman enough that he just gives me the cheapest price available without me asking. The only apple device I own is an ipod classic because of its high storage capacity, I dont own any other apple devices because I find they are overpriced pieces of crap, that give you no freedom at all.....

Quoting 'playful4u' Listen to the ABC news...is that nerdy or too straight?     As I settled in for 4-corners followed by Q&A followed by Lateline last night, I did wonder if I'm a nerd or just a boring old fart. I own (and wear) Birkenstock sandals...

So this topic has brought the geeks and the nerds out of the woodwork, but looking at most responders profiles, you'd never know they had such inclinations. I (Mr) have been described as "like Sheldon", my wife is medical science and baking geek, and I think our profile has at least a cursory indication that we have those interests. Just as a pair of geeks, it does make finding other geeks hard if they hide it... do people find it lowers their chances of success? Any particular reasons?

Thanks Manly, C64 was a bit amateur. But in my day we couldn't afford such luxuries. I built my first (286) PC from components, but I tell my kids I carved it out of wood.Hey 303ccc. Hinting that you might be clever on your profile is a crime here. Search for threads on "professional" for some examples.Mr C

Yes we all have nerd/gamer in us.. I was brought up on consoles from about 1982 with the Hennimex console then it went on from there. I had mostly all the gaming consoles since and to this day I still enjoy a good 16hr session of Live with mates. And I can safely say on this thread that I do have quite a few collectables, not to mention my Game&Watch handheld games.. If anyone wants to hang or do some co op or board game let me know, ill be keen...- Posted from rhpmobile

And that is *exactly* why I posed the question... Now, if I can roll 18 or better on my d20, I get to shag the D&D couple senseless!- Posted from rhpmobile

I think everyone has a bit of nerdiness in them, some probably don't like to show it. I'm a pretty outgoing sociable person, love a party and love playing sports. Work in a male dominated industry and in a pretty demanding job and will most likely be found having beers at the pub with mates. However one thing none of my mates that I've known for 15+ years know is that I can play pretty advanced classical piano pieces. I also love maths and always reading into the history and how a lot of theory from the likes of Newton, Riemann and other mathematicians came up with and the importance of it. I guess no one knows about my nerdiness is probably because its just things I like to do in my alone time. I think that's why a lot of people don't necessarily hide their nerdiness, they probably just do things in their alone time for leisure or just as a hobby. - Posted from rhpmobile

I am a trained mezzo soprano from Trinity College London and appear in at least one stage musical theatre production every season. My favourite film is The Sound of Music and I am an ABC girl, Parliament Question Time, Q.I., Catalyst, the 7.30 Report, Insight, Four Corners, Media Watch and Downtown Abbey. I have some Princess Di memorabelia and still have her entire wedding and funeral recorded on VHS cassette tape. Yes, I sometimes watch them. I also have all of my late grandmothers' Englebert Humperdink albums on vinyl. I am a tragic romantic and a sucker for a good wedding, birth or funeral and have a fascination for 19th century Churches and ones of the Victorian Era.I have been known to walk through cemeteries and read random headstones to see if I might know any dead people.I often partake in karaoke nights at the local bowling club where I drink 'shandies' and am the only one under the age of 60. I also enjoy talking to old people. There you go Messolonghi! My own brand of nerd. A daggy, emo nerd too!

During uni I bought old boardgames from garage sales and Ebay (when it was first taking off) and resold the pieces to people who needed them, anything from scrabble to the Avalon Hill or Fantasy Flight Games big sets. Risk and alcohol must keep at least 100 metres away from one another at all times.Done a lot of nerdy things in the past, some things still haunt me to this day. We kind of forget how bad some of the old technology was, even the "mindblowing" stuff - how many of us could deal with a 56k modem now? blergh
