Losing weight

March 10 2013

Turns out it's pretty easy after all. My tip, reduce (but don't eliminate) carbs, choose low GI carbs, reduce animal protein (a generalisation but we eat WAY too much), choose lean protein, reduce fruit to 2 pieces a day, choose low GI high nutrient fruit, and here's the real trick ... significantly increase plant foods ... yep, veggies. Keep fats and oils to a minimum but don't be extreme. Flavour with herbs and spices. Add a small palm-full of nuts and veggies dipped in hummus for snacks. You'll be surprised how full you are, how your energy levels rise, and how you get some balance in your body in all sorts of ways :) Of course, add exercise too, for its many benefits, and adjust your food intake to account for the activity. So ... your tips??

Best advice I heard is to not give up any foods that you love at all! That is why there are so many diets out there as nearly all of them fail telling you to give up this and give up that pffffttttt! . If you like to eat carbs, eat them If you like chocolate, eat it If you like animal protein, eat it . If you have large portions of pasta then once a week serve it up but with just a spoonful less....If you drink a whole bottle of coke in a day...then once a week cut it down by even a third of a glass or a thimblefull if you like! If you eat cake every day then just cut it down by a sliver every week..and so forth! This way you are not denying your body anything you like and your stomach will naturally and slowly shrink until you eat less! . I hate hearing about diets...what works for you may not work for another and may indeed make some sick! Stick to what you enjoy eating, love life, and most importantly love yourself just as you are! xFunlovingx

I don't like 'diets' at all. I've come around to the idea of truly healthy eating though - putting in the stuff that's really good fuel and not putting in the stuff that is crappy fuel. That's how I arrived at the tips above. Everything in moderation of course - I'm a chocolate lover after all ;)   What motivated me to post was the realisation that people make losing weight complicated, like somehow they should still be able to eat copious amounts of fat, sugar, salt, processed foods etc, and have huge portion sizes, but still look and feel great, I'm sure some people can, and you're absolutely right that what works for one might not work for another, but I think for many (me included!) a reality check is needed.   I'm in a glass house so I'm certainly not throwing stones, I'm genuinely interested in other people's ideas, experiences, tips etc. There are plenty of fit, healthy people on here and I'm sure they don't get there on genetics alone.

Gets it off and keeps it off. C25 is a good program to get you started. Also watch your portion size. I cut my portions in half to lose weight and gave myself the option, if I'm still hungry I can have the rest... Usually I don't want it. Cut down alcohol too. Everyone i know who does febfast loses weight.

this is a timely post for me.A young friend who is only 27 had a heart attack yesterday. He is seemingly one of the fittest people I know.A total gym junkie, tall and muscular ,he had a diet of junk food. Yesterday after playing football he had chest pains, his girlfriend drove him to the hospital where he had the heart attack.Last night he had surgery, one of his major arteries was clogged. The doctors have said that it is a direct result of his poor diet. He is expected to make a full recovery but some major changes to his lifestyle will need to be made. Thanks for the tips on healthy eating Lil_bit.

Die with a "T" added on.   Very sorry to hear about your friend Freya, i do hope he gets well soon.   Heart failure is usually the cause of super fit people keeling over, they create a huge demand for oxygen to their muscles and their heart grows larger, it's just a muscle to and when it gets larger it can't pump effectively.   The simple truth about fat loss is calories in verses calories out unless you are on a ketogenic diet, the ketogenic diet works by metabolic trickery, it's not really calorie dependant. The latest TV diet " bodytrim" is a borderline ketogenic diet, most people i know that have tried it have had good results with it. Diets that are going to be lasting should really be considered a lifestyle change not a diet though.   Diet is only half the equation though, a good gym program helps, muscle is the furnace that burns fat.

Running is a fantastic way to keep weight off or get it off! So many ppl say 'I can't run' maybe they can't for various health reasons, but where there is a will there is a way! If you can't run, then walk! Everyone is different n works for one person may not work for the other! I also refuse to have scales in my house!

That I need resistence training. Cardio alone is not enough for me to lose weight and then keep it off. A couple of years ago I lost 30kgs and now Im getting set to lose the last 15kgs.   Wish me luck   Kisses Focud

Having gone from a very active lifestyle including heaps of sport, to a 60hr week in front of a PC or in the car, I know how to put weight on!Fortunately also worked out how to get it back off again. Some good tips above, but the key for me has been eating smaller amounts more often. I eat six times a day in small portions, and try to avoid the obviously "bad" foods as snacks. That and drink nothing but water (most of the time) have been the key things for me. Lots more exercise helps, but the reality is weight gain/loss is all about what you put in your mouth. Putting something in and out, in and out, in and out probably isn't going to help no matter what orifice you use, although I certainly recommend trying!Mr C

I personally don't drink but wines have very low carbs. So, if you want to drink take that instead of mixers (lots of sugar) or beer (lots of carbs). Wine might help not put on more weight. Alcohol does lower blood sugar levels though so diabetics take note.I have been steadily losing weight, about 1kg a month. I've lost about 9 kg so far. I have a combination of exercise and dieting. For my diets, I would have smaller meals more often (say 5-6 times a day). Dieting just means portion control. I weight my food and eat that amount, nothing more nothing less. I also tried using protein shakes. They all taste horrible but it does help fill you up so you don't have to eat more, well for me anyway.I tend to go for long brisk walks. I might try some resistance training though. Oh, and the result. After an occasional heavy meal, my weight does not shoot back up because my body has been gradually losing the weight. For people going on low-carb diets or any other diets, make sure you have enough vitamins and minerals. If not, take a supplement. Hope that helps. I am no expert although I've read up quite a bit on it. I am vegetarian though so if anyone wants to talk about a veg diet with me, please feel free to contact me or post on this forum. Do understand that I am not a professional and you should consult your own dietitian for expert advice. Pretty much, please don't sue me if things don't work :) Good luck.

Lose your wife (and appetite... don't ask ) Walk 10kms (or about an hour) each morning before work Eat whatever fits on a bread and butter plate 3-6 times a day (don't limit the type of food, just the amount in one sitting) Don't eat after 7pm (if bedtime is 10pm) Half the amount of sugar you drink (now reduced to what is in alcohol and home squeezed fruit juice) Lose the scales for a few weeks (they put you off if you keep looking at them)   Worked for me... lost 15kgs between the beginning of December and the second week of Jan. Have lost the scales again so can't tell how much more is gone BUT an down 2 shirt sizes since new years...

..a lot of it is also about serving size. I'm very skeptical of all the no-gluten, no-carb diets - I believe in the 'everything in moderation' philosophy. It's astonishing how many people will actually eat until they're simply stuffed, when in fact eating 3/4 of what you had would have been sufficient. Also identifying the speed of your metabolism and customising the amount of meals/snacks you have a day and their quantity helps as well. Some people stick to strict eating regimes but then have a 'pig out day' once a week where you give into every craving you've desired over the course of the week.I used to be quite a fatty. My stretch marks remind me of what I used to be, and unfortunately I can still identify which fast food chain food it is that the person behind me is eating simply by smell..!Fabulous to hear your progress, OP!

I have lost a few inches in the waist. It is getting harder and harder to keep my pants on even after putting new notches in the belt. Then again, from what I hear on this site the aim is to get the pants off Hmm...a bread and butter plate huh? I weight my food but I think it should be about the same though. Speaking of which, time for my small plate of grapes.

But i get up 1/2 early every day - well work days...oops...and walk.... I dont like diets. Ive tried shake supplements and granted they work, but as soon as you stop the weight goes straight back on... as someone said earlier and for me its about making a lifestyle change. I could give up alcohol for Feb fast but what happens on March 1? I enjoy a drink so for me to give up forever... that will never happen. So.... back at square 1 on March 1 me thinks! lol Everything in moderation. Carbs adore me.... and i sooooo adore them but I have learnt that there are no more to be eaten after say 3 or 4 in the afternoon - and for me thats worked. The older ive gotten the lazier i am... its hard to shift my ass off the couch sometimes but i've made a deal with myself to MOVE (i know.. sad right?) And the scales thing - well we are all different but i find the more often i weigh myself the more motivated i am... especially when i first started and saw the results on the scales. Now when i've eated badly A. i feel guilty and B. the scales confirm it.... I love red meat, i adore cheese, pasta and bread, thankfully never been big on chocolate or other sweets but love my savoury - give me a dim sim anyday! - they are all my enemies, but i've learnt how & when to enjoy them to most benefit me and my body. I think the most important thing is for individuals to work out what works best for their own bodies.... Trial and Error Wishing us all the very best of fat loss!

If you don't mind me saying so, but that is a fine looking arse. The two things that kills a diet is carbs and fat. Meat and cheese have low carbs but can be high in fat. Oils and butter/margarine is pure fat. The main problem is the pasta and bread. I can control the bread but can't judge the amount of pasta. Pasta, like rice is evil. I always think it is too little. That is why I weight my food now. I know I have 70gm cooked pasta on my plate and that is it.

By far the best proven way to lose weight is through High intensity training and utilizing weights. (Ladies you will not bulk by lifting a little weight!) what you put into your body is also important. A 20-30 mins HIIT session will burn fat alot quicker and more effectively than long cardio sessions such as running. To build muscle you need carbs! If you train at night eat carbs (good carbs like sweet potatoe) as soon as you can along with a quality protein shake. It doesn't matter if its after 7! If your exercising 5 times a week with 2 HIIT sessions thrown in you will get results.

losing weight? we eat a healthy diet...nothing restrictive or exclusive, just fruits, salads and lean meats, sensible portions all the time....we indulge in junk food when we feel, and i have a very sweet tooth (mmm love cream donuts, lol.).Shels the same size as she was as a teen, i'm not as i was pathetically skinny back then lol... we dont exercise at all, and are happy enough with our physiques that we frequent nude beaches when the opportunity arises...oh, and the doc tells us we are healthier than most our ages.....
