Lets play a game with my work mates

July 26 2010

I've been tasked with running the weekly team meetings from now on and I need to come up with games to play with them that have good work meaning. I need silly games I can use to embarrass them with.Example last friday I made up cards with animals on one and emotions or problems on another card. I gave random animals and emotions to people and they had to (in pairs) make the other person know what animal and emotion it was by speaking/communication only in the language of that animal.I had to wipe tears from my eyes by the end of it.I even made some late person demonstrate their animal/emotion infront of everyone... he was a sad lion and I've never seen a 60 yr old man demonstrating an emo lion before but it was worth every minutewhat else can I get em to do. generally speaking safe for work stuff but double entendre is ok toodiscuss

Welcome to the new f'd up world of three letter acronyms, meetings to plan more meetings, use of stupid words like 'granularity' as a substitute for 'more detail' and team-building activities that dont involve drinking or setting fire to anyone. . I blame Julia.

FFS how long are these meetings and what's the average hourly rate of the people attending them?I provide a highly skilled, cost intensive service to my customers and all I hear is how expensive it is. Yep I lived on the poverty line for 10years so I can rip myself off and be cheap for people that may or may not produce anything in their work lives?????Remember the Australia card? I reckon everyone should have one and it should have your occupation, how much tax you pay and what volunteer work you have done on it. As well it can have a rating from all other transactions you do. Now for every good and service you procure you have to swipe the card and the provider gets to look at your info and decide on your bill. Then rate the experience to go back on your cardThis would make people more accountable for what they do and how they treat other people in their lives. If you're an arsehole then you're going to get charged more. If you're flush with money but crying poor you'll be caught out. If you're struggling a bit then people might cut you some slack. If you're a lawyer, your fucked and if you earn tens of thousands of dollars playing stupid games at meetings then good luck!!!

Nothing personal Total_Recall, and it may seem to work in your workplace for you and that's great... but the majority of places where those sorts of team building exercises are undertaken... No. They can be amusing but ultimately it's been proven that they really do bugger all for productivity or stress release. Drinks after work, social outings and group work with a definite measurable outcome (such as charity work etc) are far more productive :) And yes, I'm qualified to say this, it's not just an opinion :)That all being said... I want to be a Llama. I already have a part that spits ;-) LOL

My guess is he either works in a call centre or another type of high pressure sales environment. I worked for a year in of them one day. This is the sort of rubbish they carry on with to try to "motivate" staff.

Get 'em all to set up a profile on RHP and talk about sex and shit in the forums one hour a day. It's a great time waster, perfect work avoidance, and you can be any kind of animal you wanna be in an anonymous situation without anyone poking you with a stick because you're 60 years old and late for a team building meeting... no doubt ... at 60... you've had more than enough of your share of that kind of shit by then.... and hey... maybe a quick lunchtime root is really worth going for to break the tension. Sure beats wanking in the men's toilets to get some time out. Hugs Stalky

What a bunch of grumpy assed old farts you all are !!! We spend a huge majority of our lives at work.....who said it has to be painful and negative and unstimulating ??? Maybe these younguns could teach us a thing or two about work life balance and making our work environment fun and enjoyable !! High staff morale increases productivity........My work environment is often stressful, demanding abusive (from staff and client !!) under paid and unappreciated but i take every opportunity to make it fun and satisfying........I never get to be an emperor penguin but if i could..... i would be !!!

Some people think its fun to harass the crap out of young and new people so they "toughen up". And what's wrong with some team games to help build morale and reduce stress? Its far better than sticking grease guns up apprentices butts (yes that did happen to some poor apprentice mechanic in NSW) or bullying people to keep them performing. Though TOTAL, what bothered me about your post is that it sounds like you are looking for things that could humiliate your colleagues. I would prefer to think you are laughing with them, not at them. And go get a book, there are plenty available or even google, you'll find enough to keep you going for ages. And sheesh, didn't the idea of someone having a bit of fun at work bring out people's judgement!

I understand team building. When a person works in an environment where people are coccooned.. isolated frmo each other, nobody knows anyone.. there's no "helping your mates".. when you have none... and team building activities put a personal character on individuals who others might not know that well. As well, nobody knows "the new guy"..... and if you have a high turnover of staff, the problem is even more difficult to "fix". Having drinks after 4pm on Friday is an old fashioned method... but dead boring for people who do not drink... and also frought with the risk of a claim should someone get drunk.. or overtly frisky after a few... so it also has its limits. I think, whatever you do, you need to mix it up.... keep in mind that the objective is not to teach anyone anything at all.... just give people the opportunity to get to know more about each other. This is why I think a great big fuckfest is the best way to build a team.... everyone should be sworn to secrecy... leave their phones etc out of the board room, tell them the real objective of the meeting, don a wrestling mask, turn the lights down... put on some sexy music and get naked, then see what happens. :p Condoms, lube and amyl on the house. :p Hugs Stalky

Oh that's a great IQ test Mikle. Reminds me of being sent for the good old left handed screw driver. Off I toddled to the nearest cafe, had a nice long lunch and a few cups of coffee, when the boys came for lunch there I was with my feet up out in the sun :)

lots of narcy peeps here huh??Sheesh...anyone would think Total has asked you all how best to cut someones arm off...so that its still entertaining and morale building for the rest of the team.Total...Im sure there are lots of good, clean games/activities that can be suggested to you...but you might be better off asking somewhere where peeps are a little less judging about it.Oh..and have you tried the one with the raw spaghetti and the marshmallows??The aim is to make the tallest self supporting structure...without breaking up the spaghetti (each stick has to be used whole). It's quite fun....and a good engineering task.(just quietly...I rocked at it! LOL!!)Good luck.JMO...BJxxx

Mate, we do similar things at our work. In our recent staff survey (just over a thousand respondents) free text comments stated that they loved the 2PM Wednesday "Kick Start". Our staff volunteer to do odd jobs for each other for 30 minutes on hump day... everyones had enough by Wednesday. Staff wash each others cars, do filing, help out in the canteen and swap jobs. Workers that have something fun to look forward to, are happier more productive workers. Somebody said it's the American way of doing things... Yep it is. And the last time I looked, the Americans are the richest and most successful country. And they're only a hundred odd years older than Australia. They must be doing something right??

Americans are the richest and most successful? Umm don't know who told you that ... they are poorer than us, their health and education system is stuffed, and they were hit the hardest during the last "Recession"!! We did so much better than them in all aspects! But America is successful in having the most employees shoot out their work mates in the worldplace...if you call that success!! I'm all for team building and like the idea of swapping jobs, etc...and the spaghetti and marshmallows sounds great...just not into making fools of other people..that is not cool at all! Morale is down mainly as noone feels secure in their workplace anymore, loyalty in a company and from a company is lost these days and you never know if you will have a job from one day to the next! The best thing you can do for your team Rob is to tell them how much they are appreciated and to acknowledge their hard work. That to me would be the best boost to anyone's morale. xFunlovingx
