How do you know?

I'd like to put this primarily to the men on the forum...however either gender is welcome...as it has always interested me how/why this happens. If you have ever let a partner down in an extreme way-which has caused your banishment from the relationship... How is it you know the precise moment that your ex is now content, happy and determined to move on? Do you get a "feeling" or is it a reaction to hearing the news through the grapevine that they are happy? Why is it that it is only when they have made the decision to let go and move on with their life that you decide to return-to darken the doorway with apologies, remorse and promises to change? Is it clarivoyance or is the time between your banishment and return the time it takes to complete an accelerated course in psychological warfare-ie "If I will not have them I will leave them utterly destroyed"? Is it genuinely because you want them back-you truly cannot live without them or you just can't stand the idea of them being happier-potentially with someone else? Should someone ever give you another chance? Why? Have any of you only ever learned the error of your ways because of banishment and implemented changes or was it all lipservice just to get back into their bed and be serviced? I sound like I should just lock myself in a room with some razors and the Smiths due to my indecision and despair don't I? It's not that bad-I'm quite resolute in regards to my situation-there's just some unavoidable housekeeping to be attended to... I'd just be interested to hear why men do this?
