Grammer/Spelling Police...

December 21 2010

There was a post in another thread aboit grammer and spelling. Firstly this is not flaming the poter of that it is simply by slant on how we post in the forums. I think that what we say and how we say it is a relection of our selves. It gives us insight to the person do we use archiac words or do we use text speak. I for one, have no idea what a fragmented sentance is, but according to word I am inclined to type them. At some point I recall a post mentioning spell check in the forums, infering there was one that could be used...if there is please tell me where it is. I think it would be sad if we all posted with perfect syntax, form and style. I prefer substance to style. Granted at times it is very difficult to undrstand a post that is one sentance with no commas...But I know I have said to people in person...Slow dow, take a breath and start again... At other times the style of typing may be intentional. I can think of circumstance where I would prefer the use of lower case i, in fact I would insist upon it (that is probably a subject of a different thread tho). So to what extent does style sway you over substance? LC

Im hopelessly addicted to the "......." I know I share this addiction with a few and it delights me no end when Im typing away a conversattion and its interspersed with the "......" from both parties.I tend to type as I speak, grammtically incorrect. The only time style sways over substance is the no paragraph type posts.I used to find Nymphetamine's style labourius(spell police??) but after reading the love and cherish thread found her to be an extremely good read so I'll take the time and effort to concentrate on her style from now on.What can sometimes annoy me is the quoteing a whole post when in reference to one particular sentence in it. Then someone else comes in and posts the aforementions post complete with original plus plus..I tend to skip that read which is probably a shame but that's just me.LOL Im feeling very self consious about my grammar, spelling and punctuation in this post.....am I going to be graded??P.S oooo Im an absurdly over user of the ??? after a question to!!! ooooo and !!!!! too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I make typos, spelling mistakes, punctuation mistakes and can even be known to start a sentence with "but" when I know it to be incorrect. What I do have difficulty with is all the text talk. It is okay for all the younger people to chime in and say it is going to be an accepted language and I know it will be so but that does not mean I understand nor want to understand half of what the hell they are going on about. You is spelt Y_O_U or even E_W_E it is not spelt U. Unless in u-turn or u-bend. I will, however, persevere through all posts and messages. Even if it means I need to read and re-read a few times to understand what is being said. I also find NymphetamineDrm's posts laborious but on the other hand find ChasingMidnights longer posts absolutely hilarious and have no trouble following what is said and meant. So for me, I like my messages and posts as I like my guys........... With both substance and style!

My parents were both teachers and despite my not finishing high school, they instilled in me an appreciation for grammar and spelling. I care because I consider writing to be a way that I represent myself, but I'm never going to put anyone down because they don't attach the same value to it that I do. This is a place for thoughts - it's not a spelling bee.If you want a spell checker, you can run one through your browser. I use Firefox and it's got plenty of free plug-ins that you can download. I'm sure the other browsers provide the same functionality - if not, write it in Word or something, then cut and paste it when you're happy.

I have just yesterday started posting on this forum. I like to do my best when writing but was frustrated to see all my paragraphed type lost when it finally appeared. Also would like to know how to change colours, use bold or italic, insert smilies, and quotes. There is no help on formating on this site. This post has two paragraphs. My last 5 posts had many and they all disappeared.

I find bad spelling and grammatical errors annoying but I can understand it if the person's first language isn't English. Whoever invented spellcheck should be quietly removed to a remote location and shot! It doesn't discriminate between words such as their, they're and there, whether and weather, one and won etc. And does anyone proofread anymore? It only takes a few moments to re-read what you have typed to see if you have made any mistakes. Spelling Police? Not really. Just disappointed at what seems to be the demise of the written word. Oh, and as for text speak? If I can't make sense of it then I can't reply.

I agree with what MistressT has said here. I'm a little anal retentive on this topic - I can't help it. The OP may indeed have been referring to a recent reply I made to a hot topic (on replying) and the fact that I can be a bit discriminative toward people who write with poor grammar and no knowledge at all of basic spelling and sentence construction. I made that comment solely with respect to the likelihood that I would see it as a sign we may not be compatible. Keyboards and passionate responses to hot forum topics don't necessarily make for good spelling and so I'm not completely immovable on this. Hell, I know I make typos all the time (and innocently blame my dodgy keyboard!). I suspect I have most likely formed this attitude as a result of 'text speak' and watching the steady decline of the written English word. Truth is, sustained conversation with someone who can't or won't spell properly would sh*t me up the wall and I can't help that. It wouldn't be a deal-breaker, but it would annoy me and I'd most likely turn into a condescending, painful grammar-nazi with a superiority complex - not a good look, by my own admission.

Quoting 'GirlTuesday'Australians and English folk tend to use their vowels as nature intended, the American spell check option, tends to remove them. More's the pity :) I dont really think nature has much to do with the english language actually. It evolved from many other languages. Two being German and Latin. It is one of the hardest languages to learn and Australian English (yes there is such a thing) is reasonably far removed from English (as spoken by the British) All babies, the world over start by using the same few sounds and progress by imitating the language spoken by thier priciple caregivers.

Agreed..Bad english and those who swear all the time can sound bogan like, and unappealing (to us anyway) But petty people who judge others by spelling in a profile or reply really need to get a life.. slang is here to stay and sadly abrieviations are the future of the english launguage (NOT american booooo) Bernie

The problem with text 'speak' or badly written posts is it takes some brain power just to decipher what is being said, let alone it's meaning. This isn't so much an issue in the workplace, where bad grammar and spelling is what it takes to make it to the top these days.. But on rhp, where blood flow to the brain can be limited due to diversion elsewhere, it can be. . Personally, I like a grammar nazi with a superiority complex.. it makes you tri harda. Keeps u on your tows. U no?

Mmmm Pusscat, hope you're well and that you and Woody both have a Merry Christmas! I couldn't help myself, please forgive me hehe... spelt is spelled spelled Pmsl LC, and aboit is about... etc. I'm not too sure you didn't load up a whole pile of typos for fun. I'm wondering if they're... fragmented words haha.I'm not too sure mine is not the post you read re: spell check though I have seen it written by others. I'm not too sure how it works but our pc is set up to spell check automatically... maybe under tools? Son agrees to look under tools The thing I've always wondered is why many don't use capitals for their profile names? Other than that, I was taught to write as I spoke (deal with that spell check) and sometimes I like to misspell deliberately ya know. I'm not that well educated the same I'm sure as many others, mind you some of the better educated people I've known can't spell etc for crap. Oh and Markusss67, a possible solution I read in the forums (seems you're not on a mac lol) had to do with using a different browser, hope that helps. Hugs all and hopes for a very Merry Christmas!!! hehe

Whilst it is congnizant to be able to compose a easy to comprehen missive to allow your thoughts to be understood by the other participants, it sometimes isn't that easy! * For starters, I have trouble with the entire RHP Forum engine. I compose a nice post, make sure spelling is as good as it can be, and most importantly, ensure suitable paragraph breaks are entered. I click on the "Post your Comment" button. Thanks to the good fortune of the RHP Admins I get instant posting so I immediately check to see what my post looks like REAL. And I am alwasy dismayed to find that all my paragraph breaks have yet again disappeared. * Apart from that, I can accept the odd spelling mistake but please not long winded posts. We have one contributor that I have never fully finished one of her posts, I lose interest about a third the way through!! * Mooka P.S. "*" is where I had paragraph breaks lol

To me, there is NO bigger turn on than a man with a large vocabulary! While I don't necessarily judge people upon their spelling or grammar, I'm far more likely to sleep with people who know how to spell basic words. After all, how will you be able to pleasure me by writing the alphabet on my clit with your tongue, if you get stuck about what letter comes after 'P'?

Thank you Pusscat, the lead up to today was a bit of a trial but the day was all I could have hoped for and more. Awesome to be getting so much well deserved joy out of our family :-DI delved deeper into the mystery of the spelt/spelled question and checked a few sites and got different opinions. There were repeated mentions that the use of the word spelt is archaic but I ended up noting that my spell check tells me spelt is wrong and spelled is right after reading the next article a lot of spell checks use American English... n I have long noticed my spell check spells neighbour as neighbor, replaces s with z in words like sympathise etc. http://abhishake.wordpress.com/2007/12/04/spelt-or-spelled-how-do-you-spell/http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_it_follow_English_rules_to_say_spelt_instead_of_spelledhttp://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=misspeltSo there you go, there was I thinking spelt was a common misspelling of spelled after seeing it on a list some time ago which it seems is not so simply the case. Roll on the New Year! Marcusss, amusingly (to me at least), I also 'googled' grammer/grammar @ (http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic31228.html) and found the spell check tip for google chrome there only moments ago. LC... looks like another little problem in the whole spelling/grammar equation taking American English etc spell checks into account lol. Hugs n a Merry Christmas xoXox

I hate how my words get all messed up when the final article appears....hence why i change line every sentence.I find it much easier to read a post...when its separated like this.Long winded posts that go for 3 full scrolls of the mouse wheel...are simply skipped over...(my brain says TL;DR)and while i like a well composed post...i wont skip a badly composed one..with terrible spelling and grammar...unless i find the content abhorrent.I also find the regular sized italics hard to read.So if you must italicise...make it bold...or make it bigger.Oh...and i hate how if you quote someone....if you dont put your cursor down far enough...you are stuck in the world of grey italicised writing...hate that!!JMO...BJxxx

Text talk is one of my all time turn offs! Honestly, if you can't take the time to say what you mean using proper words- then don't bother. To me it says, 'I am either too lazy or too unintelligent to speak/write' .....or 'See how up with all things cool I am?'. Nope sorry, we won't answer you! Ransom spelling/grammar mistakes are fine~ It happens!

No matter what I do I don't seem to be able to get good spacing but other people do. Also what is this 'Instant Posting Rights'? How do you get it?
