Girls Females Women...

April 02 2017

... are the three most commonly used terms on here for delineating estrogen-rich humans. I Usually use "women" because "estrogen-rich humans" is a mouthful (and may offend some post-menopausal women), "girls", although a bit warmer, strikes me as patronising, and "females" sounds zoological. There's also "ladies", but really, only the Beastie Boys can pull that off. What's your preference girlswomenfemalesladies?

I like 'girls', even though it's been many, many years since I was young enough to qualify as a girl lol. Women/woman is fine. Female/s should only be said in a David Attenborough voice as in: 'the female of the species'... very zoological term to me too. Ladies... meh, not a fan either... brings my mom to mind. CM... yikes. I think 'women' is the most appropriate, but I know I tend to use 'girls' and 'chicks' as well in casual and informal situations or online discussions. It's when men use 'girls' in an infantilising way - and you can tell when they're doing it - that I get annoyed. Re 'females' - I've noticed so many of the MRA types in online discussions use 'female', because it's depersonalising and othering. Many of those types of men don't really see women as equal human beings and it's reflected in the language they use. For that reason I'm always wary of guys who consistently refer to women as 'females'.

woman hear me roar 🎼🎷 Depends on age when I'm using a term. I like chicks for younger women and woman for older women. On the receiving end, it depends on context and who's talking to me, but I like mostly other terms from close friends 😉 babe or their dirty little slut lol love that. But as an example of context, if a guy told me I was a beautiful woman, that works for me 😀 but if a stranger said 'have a look at that woman' translation 'look at her arse hanging out of her shorts' doesn't have quite the same ring to it 😀 Really hate being called a lady, that gets my hackles up 😉

I tend to say chicks only with friends as they say it a lot. I find it a bit odd to call a woman I'm unfamiliar with a chick although I'll use it a bit more when I know her better. With women around my age I usually go for girl though I'll sometimes say women as well and for women older than me it's always going to be woman. I think it's got to do with the fact that I'm still comfortable being called boy by people older than me (as long as it's not in a patronising manner).

No one's bitten my head off yet, so I'll keep testing my limits with that one. "Girls" leaves me feeling kinda dirty-old-man, which I don't care for...and "Ladies" is a bit trying-too-hard for me. It does require a certain amount of tongue in cheek to pronounce it properly. And on the question of women calling men boys, it's actually not that uncommon. Women often say the like of "come on boys" or "what're you boys up to" to groups of hairy men. It never bothers me and I'm sure doesn't bother most men, but then there's no history of a disadvantageous power differential to make it problematic.

Those that are so lame as to need a quick fix should pony up with a few dollars and head elsewhere. I think the intonation and the intention matters to me more and I seldom take real offence at nicknames if the person using it meant well. I don't use most of the terms and I generally try to use the person's name unless I know them really well and we are on buddy terms. I have a TV friend and whenever we meet, we flirt outrageously with each other, poke and prod each other, burst out laughing and we call each other "Bitch!" Wherever we go, some people would look at us with disgust because they find "Bitch" offensive but we never stop giggling over it. Another good friend likes to yell out, "Hey, woman!" which I used to cringe at but she means no harm and she's being relaxed with me so who am I to deny her this little pleasure? When role playing, slut, whore, hooker, escort, slave, etc is ok and in fact, the suggestion of being a persona so far removed from my prim and proper world makes me really excited! It's like a dark secret, double identity thang! Covert action! Basically, if it's a term of endearment used by someone I am affectionate with or am fond of, I am happy with it. I've been called almost all the terms mentioned in this thread and it doesn't faze me again if the intonation is not sarcastic and the intention is amiable. If I dislike / distrust someone, then nothing they use will sit right with me. I even hate my name being used by people I really do not care for. So basically, if I can feel the love and it's mutual, anything goes! Preserving goodwill and harmony is more important to me than making someone feel bad when all they are trying to do is be nice. It's not all about people making us feel good ... it's also about us making others feel good too! Don't sweat the small stuff ... or the sweat will sting our eyes shut and we then fail to see the good stuff!

OP, you're really lovely for wanting to be politically correct though. Very commendable. Shows what a stellar guy you are! OP, I think if you have to memorise anyone's long list of what not to call them before you meet them, it makes it too hard and would you want to befriend someone who takes offence so easily anyway? Life's already very stressful and hard without having to bear extra burdens like that. I'd rather be with sensible, easygoing peeps, feel relaxed and have a good laugh and a great time instead of treading on eggshells with prima donna's or ultra sensitive peeps, being in constant fear that the next thing I say is going to set them off on some hissy fit even though I said it out of affection. Maybe, just maybe OP, the way a person reacts to something that has been said that's ruffled their feathers somehow, could be a very good indicator to you of the person's personality and conflict resolution skills and maybe that could be a factor in whether you'd choose to pursue a relationship with that person or not. Sometimes, it's good to put things in perspective and conserve our energy for better things in life. Better to have friends who are fond of us and whom we are fond of, calling us whatever they wish than to have no friends at all because everyone is too scared of inadvertently offending you with something they say. I used to want to really slap a friend for calling me "woman" in a particular language, which sounded pretty coarse and rough, that was how much I violently hate it; and I used to want to projectile vomit when another called me "babe" but when I took a step back and saw that it all came out of a good heart, all was forgiven and now, I actually love those terms! I even got called Pork Chops by one guy friend and in return, he was Bacon Bits! I was nicknamed a nursery rhyme character by a great ex FWB of four years, now close friend, and it was all good. With another friend, I was Miss Piggy and he was Kermit and of course I sometimes would *"Haaaaaai Yaaaargh!!" *Miss Piggy signature karate chop him playfully. You can only say stuff like that with really great buddies. OP, you are a nice guy. I hope the ladies you meet would be magnanimous enough to see you for who you are and not hold any wrongly used terms against you because that wouldn't say anything about you but it speaks volumes about them. Good luck!

... but actually I don't have any interest in being politically correct, which involves allowing your words and actions to be dictated by an aggregate of what the current dominant socio-political climate says they should be. But I am keen to be treating people the way they would like to be treated, and hence my canvassing of opinion on this. The two aren't always that divergent, so it's easy to mix them up, but the difference is political correctness treats everyone as being a non-distinct member of a number of subgroups (I.e. gender, race, religion etc), whereas I prefer to think of everyone as a unique individual. It just requires a bit of ongoing curiosity, empathy and openmindedness...

Maybe just the way I was bought up but Lady or Ladies. Initial meeting really shouldn't require a label, can we not tell they are the fairer sex when meeting a Lady. If everything goes well and it goes further words are not required

Found this quote from Sir David Attenborough, after posting a comment in another topic and mentioning him, I started watching some of his work, but also found this quote which I loved and to some extent, could be us. He is talking about 'birds' 😉 "Birds are the most popular group in the animal kingdom. We feed them and tame them and think we know them. And yet they inhabit a world which is really rather mysterious" 😯
