No question - a poorly written profile is less attractive to me than one where a bit of care has been put into the spelling and grammar. I've done a bit of proofreading in my day, so noticing mistakes is a natural (and in this venue, somewhat useless) skill. It's not just me who finds good communication sexy though - I've had women tell me that they wouldn't ordinarily have been interested in me, but they responded because they admire good communication skills. With a face like mine, I need all the leverage I can get...

Sadly the computer generation is slowly losing the seductive art of the English Language and all it's nuances. I agree. my spelling can be appalling, especially on msn when there are more typo's than anythig else. A profile should reflect the personality of the person. It is all about presentation and this is a case of first impressions. Fionabee

but a badly spelled profile is rather off-putting. If you can find RHP online then it's not that hard to find an online dictionary. And don't get me started on the messages that are spelled like a phone text!! If I can't read it then I can't reply to it.

We all have things that get under our skin at some time or other. Ultimately' Its the way we let it effect us that is the real problem.. If you are sitting there winching about some poor buggers lack of education I would suggest it is you that has that problem.. I'm sure those less fortunate and maybe not quite as educated as yourself are not bothered the same way it effects the forums Spell Police.... So what is your solution' ? should they stop posting til such time they are more worthy ?? I dont think so.. Live and let live... Get over it..

Had I started this topic I would have written and re-read the passage a dozen times because you just know that if you fukk up.... I found 2 missing question marks and 2 good spots for commas as well as a spelling error/additional letter. I do however agree that some people could try a little harder and perhaps use MS Word prior to cutting and pasting to the forum.

I'll admit to wincing when it is obviously not a typo and is consistently terrible (or worse, it is txt-spk)... but being a single guy on RHP, we all know I don't read the profiles and skip straight to the 'flirt' or 'send message' button to flick off "howsa bout it luv?" ;)(One problem with the perfectly crafted forum post is that so often now we're using mobile devices to access the site, and they don't always lend themselves to nicely formatted messages - I know when I type it on the ipad it looks fine, but when it gets posted it seems to just be an ugly block of text)

Quoting 'justjuice' If you are sitting there winching about some poor buggers lack of education I would suggest it is you that has that problem.. I'm sure those less fortunate and maybe not quite as educated as yourself are not bothered the same way it effects the forums Spell Police.... So what is your solution' ? should they stop posting til such time they are more worthy ?? I dont think so.. Live and let live... Get over it.. First, the issue refers to profiles, not to forum postings. I think everyone is more forgiving in a less formal environment such as this, but a profile is where you're putting yourself up for assessment and to some people, it matters whether it's right.Second, it's not just an education gap that causes it. I dropped out of high school after year 10 and I'd be willing to bet that some of the serial offenders have a university education. A lot of it is force of habit or (dare I say it) laziness. It's no secret that a well-written profile helps - RHP tell you that from the moment you get here. Sorry, but it's not wrong to be annoyed at very poor use of the English language, especially when spell-checkers are everywhere.

It annoys you because you let it annoy you.. I dropped out of school at 14 years of age' so my education didnt really start til I got out into the real world.. I still make mistakes when drafting a letter or posting a thread on here. But Im not going to beat myself up just because someone gets all fuzzy because I miss spelt a few words or failed to use the correct grammer.. One thing I must agree with is the way a profile is presented' it can either make or break you. If a profile is interesting you are more likely to become interested.. but if not ' you just simply move on to the next profile. It really is that easy.. Mr JJ

I think most guys join the site when they are horny and wanting a bit real quick...so it would be hard to fill in a profile, let alone type about yourself and what you're looking for with one hand on your cock!! And I don't think that Education has anything to do with it, as I only completed Year 7 and do ok with my spelling! xFunlovingx

Yup, incorrect word used (your when they mean you're) or using text speak in emails. Gives me to total shits. What ever happend to the art of writing/spelling? I thought it was just the younger people but I've gotten some emails from older guys who .... well, couldn't spell to save their lives! If someone puts in the effort to write a decent message then I over look some things, but when it's short and poorly written I cringe! Must be my age..... Sweet

Point out spelling errors in menus, hotel pamphlets, websites, advertising..... (Saw a truck with the advertisement "no job to big or small". I phoned the guy and told him there was a spelling error on his advertising. He didn't appreciate it. Don't know why! If you're advertising a business you should AT LEAST use proper english and correct spelling. Oh god, I could go on and on........ Sweet

Quoting 'phoenixlady64' I work in a school we were told at a literacry workshop by an authority on literacy that sms txting shortcuts would one day be an accepted language.... A study in the US on texting showed that far from making people worse at spelling, it actually made them better at it. The conclusion was that people actually adopt a second language, requiring more skills rather than fewer. All the same, a profile should be considered to be closer to a resume than a chat with an acquaintance, I think.

A simple typo is easy to distinguish from knot noing witch word two ewes. For those who think such things as punctuation don't matter, consider the two examples:"Let's eat, Grandma!""Let's eat Grandma!"
-

Here's another example of punctuation completely changing the meaning. o A woman without her man is nothing. o A woman: without her, man is nothing. If a profile meant the second but said the first, it would hit the ground with the same sound as a wet turd falling from a tall cow.

Quoting 'DominaT' I am sitting here going back through the posts seeing all the misspelled and misused words. I think I will stop reading now. Please don't! I don't think that anyone would hold forum posts up to the same scrutiny that a profile deserves. Here, the opinion and sentiment is definitely more important than the formal construction. Picking on spelling and grammar here is a waste of time and effort, but in our profiles, we ignore proper English at our peril. I'm sure mine has errors - girls, feel free to send me a message and mention them to me, particularly if you're cute and nearby...

So many posts saying how much it irks them' yet they make the same mistakes themselves.. Probally' I am just as guilty.. Anyway' since when do we all have to be so politically correct .. I'm really surprised this thread has attracted the amount of interest is has. ? I have meet many people over the years both female and male who admit to being absolutely hopeless in composeing a letter because they dont have the essential spelling skills. Yet in the real world' they have all the nessasary communication skills both socially and corporate.. So to sit here nit picking about a a few spelling mistakes just seems to me to be a total waste of time.. Surely there are more interesting topics ??

I find articulate women very sexy and to be honest I think the effort that goes into a well written profile pays dividends. Choice of words tells me a lot about the personality of a woman. Subtle word choices and innuendo indicate a sense of hunour and intelligence that I am drawn to. Mind you, that is my personal taste, others have different preferences. Who am I to say?

Ruggedly_rugged, I think a person's accent has no bearing in the context of writing a profile. I am sure Julia Gillard is more than capable of writing eloquently! My point is that I could easily say "I am intelligent, funny and enjoy witty conversations". Anyone could say this about themselves when writing their profile. It is their witty writing and choice of words which actually backs up this statement. You can't fake that language and ability to manipulate the toe of your profile. I have found this to be a pretty accurate gauge of those I have gone on to meet. Anyway, good sex often becomes great when complimented with an intelligent and witty personality. I am the first to admit that I am not great at writing a witty profile but I certainly like those who can. I should add that Julia Gillard is unlikely to get any flirts from me, she is just not my type ;)

Serious fun? Have you been listening to the words of the woman? Taliband? 4 times she referred to the Taliban as Taliband and that's just the tip of the iceberg. They'll bring out a sequel to Pauline Hanson's "My Words Have Been Murdered" using Gillard this time.

Hmmm, Rugged, didn't you just say that you "don't find slaughtering the english language offensive"? I don't like a leader to mispronounce, but I take comfort from the fact that despite having the majority of the world's weapons of mass destruction at his fingertips, we survived a US president who couldn't pronounce "nuclear"...

I know have been guilty of typos and poor grammar at times.... But, yes there is a but, there is one word that really rubs me up the wrong way when mispelt 'sense'. It seems to appear many times over as "sence".....drives me nuts. Years ago I was offered the opportunity to learn speed writing instead of shorthand. Basically you leave out all the vowels and it is surprisingly easy to read...this would then read as "Bscly y lv t l th vls nd t s srprsngly sy t rd" Somewhere along the way, the brain inserts the vowels automaticallly.... The only time I like to read or use it though is when taking notes for myself....text talk drives me nuts as well.

"Although I much enjoy reading profiles with correct spelling and grammar, unless the person is making out they are all that and more I don't find slaughtering the english language offensive." Julia Gillard is definitely making out she's "All that and more", she's hijacked the Prime Minister job ffs... If I was paying someone $400k a year they would have a resume a lot more impressive than a career politician and they would want to have a thorough grasp of the English language, both written and verbal.

May I agree with you, save to say; May I also express my suprise when I noticed in the same paragraph complaining about spelling, you indeed made 2 spelling mistakes along with at least 3 grammar inconsistencies?? Indeed there is room in this world for people who are gramatically coherent, however, I must stress that unlike the law, ignorance indeed is an excuse. So now that we have proven that I can write ;) Perhaps you should give people a bit of a break when it comes to RHP cause afterall it's a social site where people come to relax!!!!!! But enjoy picking up on their mistakes as I know that I always will, but we won't make them feel bad in public forum ;) Have Fun, Be Safe Dan n Kristie xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Outstanding contributions snowshoe! (WARNING: deliberate grammatical error follows) And many well expressed views by others. My thoughts are that structure APPROPRIATE to the circumstances brings clarity to communication, It is therefore self-evident that it is important to make an effort to use an APPROPRIATE structure, unless you are so self-absorbed you don't care whether people understand or not. Snowshoe, it's clear to me you have a deep appreciation for communication without being fixated or dogmatic about the 'rules'. I salute you. Oh, and ditto for me with the the visual disadvantage point. :-) funandmischief - who are you to say? You are you and entitled to express your opinion which you expressed articulately and even more importantly, without placing an expectation on others to agree. It would be nice if those who feel that they are the 'target' group could respond similarly rather than taking offence and reacting.

Here's an appropriate example for the RHP environment which would cause two completely different responses:Assume?Ass u me?He he ;)And ps: for me, like others who might be termed 'snobs', if I'm not stimulated by a person while they are fully clothed, there is little chance of proceeding to stimulation sans clothing. But then I must qualify that their personality (who they are as a person) seals the deal. Snowshoe this appears to be a great PR forum for you, hope it brings you success.

The beauty of the language is that it is capable of absorbing new words and phrases and sounds from all the other languages, many of which have not survived. Bill Bryson's book "mother tongue" tells the story. Changes in the language are continual, are not incorrect and should be embraced. The English language nazis of today will be horrified by the standard English of tomorrow which will be full of shorter and more phonetic words, and current swear words will be in routine use. So get ova yorselfs noobs

"Ok now as I write this I am donning the protective helmet but here goes!! How many other people out there read profiles with poorly spelled or simply incorrect words and wince. Is it just me or does it piss other people off as well. I don't expect a crafted essay but a sentence that makes sense would be good. Uusing the right word instead of one that sounds the same would also be nice. I get that on MSN spelling sux and that is ok. But in a profile where you have the time to get it right why do so many people get it wrong? Is there room for people who will read over a profile and point out obvious spelling mistakes?" Come on people! As far as I can see, there's no point in criticising each other's forum postings. The original posting raised the far more interesting issue "How many other people out there read profiles with poorly spelled or simply incorrect words and wince. Is it just me or does it piss other people off as well?"Proofreading everything that everyone posts here is just getting us off track and probably making people reluctant to post for fear of criticism. That's not going to advance discussion at all, though maybe it is an indicator that people really do care. Still, it's not really in the spirit of a forum, is it?

I am with you snowshoe. I find it annoying with any spelling/grammar errors with any area of communications. Not just on RHP. I don't quite understand why there are abbreviations in text messages. It is still going to cost you the same to send "Oh my God! Roll over from laughing. That sucks!" as opposed to "OMG! ROLF!THT SX!". How are any of these people going to hand in a resume to an "old school" employer that requests a hand written application? It really aggravates me when I pay a ridiculous amount of money for a book, only to find the editor must still be in pre school. It makes me sound so anal retentive but I guess everyone has something that really pisses them off. Spelling and grammar tends to be my gripe. (Along with water spots on my bathroom mirrors and people who leave a shit load of toothpaste around the top of the lid). Anyway - I still think there is room for improvement with all sorts of stuff not just spelling. Hell, I am not perfect and neither is anyone else. If you truly believe that you are perfect, well ........ more power to you because you will need it.

If I spell sumfin rong, or just have bad gramma, (Breaks into song) Will u still love me tommorrow? Seriously though. I personally do appreciate profiles that are well written. I also work hard at being clear with my own communication, but sometimes I find it difficult with an email message. I prefer face to face communication. I have a lot of friends that have bad spelling and grammar, for whatever reason, so would never judge on that basis alone. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully their bad spelling is made up for in other ways! ;)

There is no point picking apart everyone's grammar and spelling in forum posts, it detracts from the original question. My spelling is certainly never perfect in forum posts because I am writing on the go. What you put in a profile is a different issue as it is your public pitch to others. This is where the thought goes in and is intended as a persuasive tool to attract others. Poor spelling makes me wince, and like it or not, often leads to the assumption that the person doesn't care about what people think. For me, that is the same as turning up at a date without caring about your presentation and how you cone across. At the end of the day, we are talking about first impressions. I think that is the end of my contribution...

Sometimes it can be a typo, or usually in my case I simply don't proof read, so I try to be objective when judging profiles, as I'm often guilty of being a slack arse myself. I hate text speak, it's not like we're paying by the letter or in a rush, so why do it?. Txt spk is not gr8, it tells me the person is lazy, uneducated and immature. Some profiles are like a small book, while I appreciate that some people like to clarify things it usually makes me thing that the person typing is a little anal. Itemising ever sinlge requirement you have also makes conversation hard to establish!, it becomes almost business like!.

Quoting 'aussiebred' I don't quite understand why there are abbreviations in text messages. It is still going to cost you the same to send "Oh my God! Roll over from laughing. That sucks!" as opposed to "OMG! ROLF!THT SX!". but originally you were limited to 164 charcters, and phones weren't able to do messages spanning multiple SMS messages - then they could but the problem was that going onto an extra message cost you more, its only relatively recently that people have unlimited text messaging. I always typed the full thing out because it was faster with a decent dictionary/predictive text and I couldn't be bothered whittling away at the letter count.
