Forumspeak, platitudes, cliches, anodynes and other annoying sayings

September 25 2013

Here are a few of my favourites...There is light at the end of the tunnel.....really,well maybe, but it could be the headlights of an oncoming train.Things happen for a reason....really,tell that to a starving child in Africa....I prefer there are reasons that things happen.Everything comes to him/her who waits..really,and how long must one wait..Miss Haversham is still waiting for her lost love...the wedding cake has crumbled, the veil is shredded.....I prefer, stop waiting make it happenEvery pot has a lid...phtt there are heaps of very serviceable lidless pots in the world...same thing goes for...there is someone for everyone, look around you.I am interested as to why you use these phrases, are they deeply held beliefs or just a parroting of conventional wisdom for the forums?I am guilty of using some of these phrases myself.Do you have some favourites that annoy you too,or is it just c'est la vie.?

I get annoyed with people who are obviously reciting something they misread and clearly haven't thought about what it means ... given it makes no sense the way they relay it.One example that springs to mind is " I could care less about what others think " ... really, well then perhaps you should - it is unhealthy to care too much about what others think ... I couldn't care less if you take the advice or not.I would use some of the examples you have provided for their euphemistic interpretations not so much to be taken as literal expressions. As always context is crucial.Light and the end of the tunnel - push on through the darkness, things can only get better. All good things come to he who waits - patience is a virtue and is often rewarded.Everything happens for a reason - This one is contentious as it is often used with the implication that a guiding hand or fatalism is at work while the literal interpretation is actually correct from a causality perspective.

"Everything will be ok." Who says? "There are plenty of fish in the sea." Sure, but maybe I'm aiming for a dolphin? Or nothing? "You will find someone." Ehh... I found a couple of someones. Why would I want to find just one?   The word Karma in general. Good things will happen to good people. Not. "Money does not buy happiness". If you give it away it does. And finally: "You can't love anyone else until you love yourself". I've seen otherwise.

Que sera, sera. What will be, will be. Life is not what happens while you're busy making other plans. It's what you make of it. Fate, my arse.

Is one of my favourite phrases. In moments of surrender, when I stop fighting life and decide to flow with it gracefully, que sera sera is the first phrase that comes to mind. It brings me peace as I recall again that acceptance of what is can be a form of real strength.

Platitudes, cliches etc... have used them... will probably use them again... whilst they may be half arsed and only semi useful they can also be better than saying nothing (sometimes), though conversely they could be more damaging than remaining silent. However, just like every explosive episode of Myth Busters it is OK to let them go boom at a distance where things are safe and no one is really going to get hurt.As for why use them? Partially parroting and partially because there is no way I could dump what goes through my brain in any better wording (seriously is a mess up there). And nope... none of them are deep beliefs... don't have many of those at all anymore.

The love of my life is just around the corner - Then why can I only see a straight road   Women are more interested in the inner beauty - really, my profile pics show my inner beauty .. pfft   I can't put a photo up, someone will recognise me - really, so if you do meet someone you will perform a Vulcan mind wipe after the date?????   I'd love to meet you - then you never hear from them again lol   I'm only here for the forums - so if Mr/Ms Perfect asks to meet you, they get a polite refusal???? yeah sure lol   Mooks

I think people use platitudes because they don't want to acknowledge the state of mind you are in. I'm currently job hunting and seriously, if I hear one more time "it wasn't meant to be" I'm going to vomit and hopefully over anyone who says it. And yes, "something better around the corner", what corner? where? point me to it cos I could use that something better RIGHT NOW! "Patience is a virtue". Yeah? please explain? When I was in Ireland some years back I was travelling with a couple of Irish guys and they were really bagging Aussies out for our "she'll be right" saying. As one said, "if your mother is sick and then dies, she won't be right, she'll be fecking dead!"I know I have used them and probably still so but in my heightened state of pissed off-ness I can't think of any I use regularly.

I use to hate hearing the expression: I love a man in uniform!   Just once I wanted a woman to say she wanted to see me out of uniform ....   Mooks

Your last one made me spit coffee and I nearly literally pmsl.Always love how the uniform can be like honey for bees when you're working and obviously not available for anything more than flirting. The uniform thing is over-rated.I have an anti-quote for you about karma......"I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, 'wouldn't it be much worse if life WERE fair and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?' So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe"

Seems to be a bit of a mantra for me here... I have noticed I've said it a few times BUT it's true, and we should resist the urge to put down other peoples' choices around sex.

In the aftermath of my father dying, organising the funeral etc., my brother and I often ended up at the same bar at the end of the day. The third or forth day in a row, the barman asked if we were in town for a particular reason. When I told him, his reply was 'I'm sorry'. In a loud and aggressive voice, I said 'So it your fault is it? I've been wondering who to blame.'. His reaction was worth it as well as the laugh my brother got out of it.

Same same but different! When my grandmother passed away my boss asked after the funeral "how did it go" I replied "we successfully buried her.....she didn't put up much of a fight" ........still laughing at the silence that followed. Bloody stupid idiot! .......some of us need to laugh to get through the tough times......- Posted from rhpmobile

gets a bit thin when you have made the same mistake over and over.I'm not judgmental - but I am going to express an opinion anyway.Beauty is within - but no one ever wants to look at my x-rays.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - just some have a lot more beholders than others.He/She wasn't worth it - then why are you feeling so bad?As one door closes another opens - but not when you are locked out.Don't blow your own trumpet - well if you can I say go for it.

An announcement that should not be uttered until the 'recipient' of multiple little deaths is lying semi-unconcious awhirl in the aftermath. . Forum / Moral / Grammar/ Spelling / etc Police... Anyone seen in Uniform should be under contract to undress themselves in the sexiest style of the best quality stripper complete with snakes and the ubiqitous baton cum dildo. Giddyup! . Nite nite

Quoting 'Gayely' I'm not judgmental I think we are all judgemental about something. I'm very judgental when it comes to doing something that will hurt your partner very much, should the truth come out. And I don't just mean cheating, I meany any form of dishonesty that could/would cause tremendous grief when discovered. And I make no excuses for it. *Braces herself*
