But I do think for children, not having one of their parents there for over a week up to a month at a time is a serious loss at the very least. Long distance relationships don't have a high percentage of success either. Not fancy but basic considerations in my opinion.

Fly in -Fly out work situations arnt ideal but some times there isnt much of a choice I have a few friends who do this with the mines purely because they had some bad luck or dug them self a hole ,and with teenage kids it was weighed up that to do the fly in and fly out option was better than disrupting the kids finishing high school ect and hope that they can get out of the hole they are in soon .They dont like it but the option was to throw there hand in the air and give up and declare bankrupt or to knuckle down and show an example to there kids (there words) that you dont run from your obligations .

I have been in the Industry for years and its simple Yes and Yes. But break it down and it is not so simple. The towns get booms those of which have property sell or rent to the industry for ridiculous amounts of cash.Example 4 bedroom house renting for 2400 a week due to no accommodation for all the FIFO for mines or construction. Those left behind feel some inflated prices on everything, gas stations start charging ridiculous amounts of money young miners go out and party and sleep with the towns women,Or women miners sleep with the men.The mine does down and leaves everything drops now there are too many houses so prices drop all the shops no longer have that influx of cash so yea that leaves a mark but most ventures branch out and more and more years are added to the mine life again and again.- Posted from rhpmobile

Some can make it work..But take my roster the last 3 years 26 days on nine days off that is about 11 weeks off in a year which to a mother, wife, father or husband (I'm neither) is a lot of precious time away from loved ones and being there for the child and or husband, wife. Some rosters are better 2 and 1 ,1 and 1 ,4 and 4. But still at what cost? Than some(most) don't make it,loose connection, can't handle being alone so long and unfortunately most popular unfaithful partners (either man or woman and either the ones at home the ones away) What about us single people you ask,Well how do you meet someone build a connection learn to trust the person enough to let them be your partner? Look around on this site you will find soo many FIFO on here for friends with benefits or looking for hook ups.Funnily enough us FIFO's are shunned on here but think of the ones that want a friend with benefits with all the intimacies of a relationship with put the heart ache of missing some one and tears at the airport and with out worrying about being cheated on the whole time you are away. It's a hard life but we choose it I'm not trying whinge or say Wo is me I'm just trying to answer your questions. These are just my opinion,I have been in the industry for almost 8 years so I think I know a little on this. There are plenty of good things about FIFO but you didn't ask that. I agree FIFO is a huge problem for a rang of reasons. My husband is FIFO, three on three off and when the kids were younger it was hell and we got a divorce. Now ten years later the kids are grown and gone and we are back together I still miss him when he goes. This life makes it easy to have affairs, on both sides the wife at home the guy in the camp Men get addicted to porn as they watch it all day and then want only porn sex when they get home. With condoms most men do not want to cum inside you any more, they want to whip it out and blow all over you the furniture, or the unlucky dog if he happens to walk past Not that I don’t like cum on me but intimate sex is a tad more complex than sowing your seed all over the room. And wives are wanting intimate times with their husbands, and the poor husbands are so horney they want it hot and raunchy and they want it now..thats when women like me come in They used to build a town, put in houses, schools and medical facilities. The USA built a town in Exmouth so the mines can do the same but its greed that stops them people with young families , the best life is a life in a north west town in WA there are always sports of some kind and people know each other and its a fantastic life style being a FIFO worker, tossing your cookies in your donga is no fun trying to get a relationship of the ground does not work when your away most of the time. Men in WA even go to the brothel before they go out, as at least they know they get a root there. They drink too much or they take drugs, they are pretty lonely guys but the money is there , for the hard work. But many loose their family in the process Centrelink is signing up mostly women who have been in FIFO relationships and are now raising kids on their own. Men are getting throw out of their houses and not seeing their kids due to their lifestyle the likes of Gina No-heart have a lot to answer for. For my life now, its easy for me now as I have lovers when my husband is at work. Most if not all my lovers are fifo men.

About FIFO - and its long term affects on workers, their families, the economy, the towns that they are staying at like Newman/Port Hedland where a rental goes for $2500- 3 grand a week The report was interesting to read and damning Socially its destroying people I know that are involved in it.........sure there is money to be made from it all and the associated industries but from a family and social service point of view one has to wonder-byt the economy here in WA is flase - Perth a ordinary every day 3 bedroom house - you will struggle to get under $550 a week and we pay $8 bucks for a coffee...this whole state is run on greed.............meanwhile we cant give our lovely nurses a decent frigging payrise............and our social services is up the shit !!!! Ive just counted on my hand, how many people I know who do FIFO - 11 couples......and everyone of them bar one has small kids and every single marriage, bar one is on the rocks..............how sad is that ? ...........what price iron ore ??

I've been FIFO for over 6 years - I have marriage issues but they're not related to FIFO and were present before I did FIFO, that said I see more of my family now than when I did shift work in Perth...and it is quality time I get to help in the kids school, see sports carnivals etc when many other Dads can't... It also lets me and the family settle, as a kid I went to 8 different schools and I'm determined for that not to happen to my kids... I'm now offshore and it is an even roster but some such as 28 on 7 off I think it would be destructive and I think it is exploiting people. Just my 2 cents worth.... :)

Personally I think FIFO is fucked !!! - it has compeltely warped this city I have a really god friend..he owns a private detective agency...and his work had quadrupled and beyond since the boom I said to him...""h so your like checking on all the lads up North are you - screwing around on theirs wives ???" "You idiot" he said to me "Open your eyes...nope... my work comes from catching out the Missus fucking around and pissing all the 2-3 grand up against the wall that the lads are making and sending home each week ...........men are fools" My mouth dropped...and then among my 10 friends couples - I looked at who was screwing around....yep in EVERY case its the wife !!!!

And while I admit to being incredibly tempted by the money, I can't miss out on the best years of my daughters life. FIFO places no more stress on a family than if a parent was an interstate truckie. I know this because my dad did both over the last 28 years. I genuinely don't understand the effects on the mining towns as described above, but it tends to make sense that the mines come in, build up prices, and then when things slow down everything goes to shit for the residents

First time on a mine full time... (I had been on mines since I was 15, in '74..) But. went underground in 1980.. I think I got lost down there somewhere, and have never been able to find my way back to the surface since. I have 5 children to 5 women, broken every vow of honesty and fidelity to every one of them.. AND more! Now days.. I see men doing FIFO.. and watch them chase skirt as soon as they get up there.. I love to tell them their wives are getting more sex then they are...and it is possible I AM ONE of their wives fcks. FIFO is not fckd "Per se" . nor is the internet, nor is porn, nor is the piss...nor is drugs. PEOPLE are fckd... people don't have control.. people are greedy.. people break the rules .. people fight.. people fkc other people... people fck around on their partners... people cheat.. people... people.... people... As a great CLASSIC country song goes.... "You load 16 tonnes and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt... St Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go... I owe my soul.. to the company store...." What does FIFO give back to the local community? VERY LITTLE in true value sense... And it seems.. WA is the leader in the mining sector for scumbags and miscreants. Tossers so up themselves, no fckn wonder their wives fck around on them. Let me tell you.. when I FIRT went to the Eastern Goldfields, it was 3 full months... living in a mining company town.. before you got EVEN your first weeks HOLIDAY allocated to you. You played up, you got kicked out. Period. You fckd your mates or other camp members over and you got flogged.. Period. I am on 4 and 1 now.. best lurk yet.. more money then a bull can shit. In a town, NOT owned by the mining company.. with all the perks of a town.. and a social life... And STILL get the chance to rub a few young noses in their own shit :) (As you gotta do when you are training pups..) Tuscan.. "Good onya girl..." And, you KNOW I MEAN that... Embrace what you can..and don't sweat the rest... You will NEVER change the heart of people!

Hubby is FIFO, has been for the 5 years we have been together, and we have young children. Dont get me wrong, it is hard, and we miss each other a lot. But I think when you dont have as much time together you try to not get into little arguments or get pissed at each other, because as you only have a bit of time together we would rather spend it in happiness!!!Unfortunately most people are jealous, possesive and not trusting of their partner in general, so being away from their partner for a lot of the time is not going to work. So i think for the majority of people who need to be in monogomous relationships where they need to keep tabs on their partner its a yes and a yes. And its not just the guys tuscanred, hubby has told me many a story of guys coming home to their wives having other men around without their consent. But for us, as a trusting loving happy couple, who are also happy for each other to release our sexual urges elsewhere if out partner isnt available (and then have hot phone sex after lol) it works just fine :)

I've been working FIFO for the better part of the last 15 years - some in Australia, some in foreign countries. As an Engineer or Manager, I don't do the FIFO for the dollars, or for the 'awesome' nightlife in my donga, and I'm certainly not into paying for cheap thrills at a brothels when I do get off site. As for those who believe the guys have plenty of opportunity with women on the sites - think again - women who work FIFO are generally outnumbered better than 20 to 1 on a mine site - and that's before you even try to find one that you might be attracted to!I work FIFO simply because I get immensely bored with the humdrum 40hr/week grind of working in a city office. The FIFO that I do is for project work, where every day is a different challenge - the project may last a few months, up to a couple of years (my longest project has been 3 years) - but, it is never the same thing each day. I doubt I could ever do FIFO operations (that would be more boring than working in a city office - 80hrs of groundhog day per week instead of 40!).As for relationships - yes, it is difficult to find a partner who will tolerate the FIFO lifestyle (especially project FIFO, where the on site stints are usually 4 or 5 weeks at a time, with only 7 to 10 days break in between) - however, I have met a couple of ladies over the years who are equally as focused on their careers (as opposed to wanting to have kids and make a family), where the FIFO relationship can, and has worked. So, is FIFO difficult on some people & families - yes. But, does it suit some people - definitely yes also. Those that are suited to the lifestyle should do it - those who aren't shouldn't. At the end of the day, everyone has a choice - no one is forced to work FIFO - they all choose to.

Don't just generalize all the FIFO guys and girls. A lot of that mentality has faded over the years sure a lot still happens but just because you do FIFO does not immediately change who you are or how you act. We are not all loose lunatics fighting, fucking and fucking people over. I'm glad to see some make it work.- Posted from rhpmobile

Wow, I've learnt more here than in a month of newspapers or radio... The idea that fifo is bad isn't my opinion, it's the tone and mood I've picked up in the press, and coming from unions, and other places. Maybe the bad press is actually just marketing by the mining companies so they can justify reducing the wages as the bust comes... I dunno. It does sound like Ballarat circa 1850's, with plenty of opportunity to tempt and ruin people... but not everyone reacts the same way. Amazing descriptions... feel like I've been "there", thank you for sharing the heartfelt impressions!!- Posted from rhpmobile
