Does Semen Make Women Happy?

March 09 2011

sex

I read this article tonight and just had to share. I so love a great discussion point! It's too late at night to paraphrase though.. This guest article from PsychCentral was written by Daniel Tomasulo, PH.D. "Seems to me the basic conflict between men and women, sexually, is that men are like firemen. To men sex is an emergency, and no matter what we are doing we can be ready in two minutes. Women, on the other hand, are like fire. They are very exciting, but the conditions have to be exactly right for it to occur."—Jerry Seinfeld . . There seems to be rather compelling evidence that semen may be a natural antidepressant for women. The intriguing feature about this finding is that it emerged from research with lesbians. . In the September issue of Scientific American, an article focused on the many virtues of semen. No kidding. It would seem an article like this would be a comic's dream to find. But even Jerry Seinfeld would have to give the facts a second look. . The McClintock effect, synchronization of menstrual periods, happens when groups of women of reproductive age all live or work together. We have known about this phenomenon for a long while, and have accepted that pheromones, secreted scents, are the factor regulating the hormones. . But this isn't true of all women. . Researchers Gordon Gallup and Rebecca Burch tried to understand why the synchronization of periods did not occur with lesbians. The most obvious difference between the two groups is that the lesbians are not exposed to semen. . Could it be that the biochemical makeup of semen is such that when absorbed through the vagina it affects a woman's hormones? . Sperm is suspended in semen and isn't absorbed by the vagina. It makes up approximately 3% of the solution, but the rest of the seminal fluid has more than 4 dozen other chemicals. One of which is serotonin: The main neurotransmitter in antidepressants like Prozac, Lexapro, Zoloft and Paxil. But wait—other mood enhancing chemicals are also present, like oxytocin, the "love hormone,"  which has been linked to such things as orgasm, social recognition, maternal instincts and anxiety reduction. Gallup, Burch, and researcher Steven Platek surveyed nearly 300 college women on their levels of depression. They administered the standardized Beck Depression Inventory and compared women who typically used condoms or had no intercourse, to women whose vaginas were regularly exposed to semen. . Guess who was in a better mood? . They also struggled with fewer symptoms and had fewer episodes of depression. So, faster than I could think WOH, I thought 'Wow! This makes a lot of sense!' and figured it worthy of discussion. I'd be interested in the collective thoughts of semen lovers (and loathers). Flirty (Self-confessed Semen Lover)

I think it is the sex and not the semen that is the mood trigger. I am sure that if a sample group was given a turkey baster full of semen every day but had to abstein from sex while another control group had sex every day, the group that had sex very day would be the happiest of the two. l Women who work and live closely together do get thier periods at or around the same time. I always thought this had more to do with the phases of the moon....like tides - most things are tied to nature. I was actually beginning menopause when I started having teenaged girls come to live with me. Now I can forget the menopause and we all get ours together, every month. My ten year old son wants to leave home and knows more about periods than most kids his age. Oh and most of my girls are not exposed to semen but they still fall into line with thier periods. l Another point not mentioned by the study was that of condom usage. If this is the case then the semen is not absorbed by the vaginal walls and the women will still be in sync. Maybe the study needs to broaden it parameters slightly to obtain more accurate data.

Fionabee: i'm not saying the study didn't have flaws, but saying "it is the sex" makes no sense since they didn't just ask who is getting one thrown up them and who isn't - they split the "having sex" group into those who were using condoms and those who weren't and thus exposed to semen.

Quoting 'sydneyboy3au'Fionabee: i'm not saying the study didn't have flaws, but saying "it is the sex" makes no sense since they didn't just ask who is getting one thrown up them and who isn't - they split the "having sex" group into those who were using condoms and those who weren't and thus exposed to semen. I may have suggested the same, but didn't want to appear argumentative over what is fundamentally a very basic study. The entire article goes into a little more depth, but even on a surface level, I thought it interesting and wondered what people thought. . And as PBG notes, I too know lesbians who's periods are synced. . I guess I thought about my erm ... semen intake, which I am in the (un)fortunate position of being able to isolate to a specific time of a calendar month at the moment, and I can say beyond doubt that I am MUCH happier for that intake for a good few days afterwards. Can't walk properly sometimes, but when I walk, it's with a big smile and not a grimace!!! I guess I'd just never considered the possibility that semen may play a part.
