when it first aired on 'Insight' SBS.com (19th Mar '13). People do not stop having sex just because they get old. They still have the same feelings as young people do. Now with the ready availability of Viagra*, and similar medications, males physical obstacles with regards to sustaining an erection have been removed. Which means people are staying sexually active right up to their 90's and beyond. (Up to their death in fact.) As much as most folk don't like talking about, or even thinking about, old people's sex lives, it is a fact. Aged care facilities do not have the right to deny the elderly direct physical contact with another in their twilight years. Not while they are still able both mentally and physically (and even then?)It is ironic that it's often the adult children of these elderly parents, who are living in aged care, that usually end up running around with their knickers in a knot when they discover that 'mum' or 'dad' have been enjoying themselves in a healthy adult way. Statements to management like; "How could you let this happen to my.....m..*insert parents name here*" ????!The thing is these oldies weren't born yesterday. They have paid their dues in life and have seen it all.Good on them to be indulging in what they now have so much more time and opportunity in the day to do.And to answer your question OP?Yes.......I hope I go out with a BANG!

I think we are all so raped up in beauty and youth, its hard for most people to get their head around sex and getting older.I think we kidding ourselves to think lots of things will change. We will still fall in love, we will still have the desire to fuck, its just a little bit more harder because we cant do all the positions anymore.Its sad in my eyes we only see American movies, when we would see more European movies you will see sex is still on the agenda even with old folks.Yes some folks go right off sex, and others not. Look around you, isnt this alraedy whith some younger people. How many men and women are on here in there 40 who are sex starved?There is no limit on sexuality because of age, just how we are able to do it.Hip replacement or not, dentures or not,Viagra or not, lots of lubes or not. Litonya you are right . A lot of regular contributors on here are in their 40's . So its interesting to think that in say 30 years from now will we be carrying on as we are now ? I have had the odd thought on sex when older, I kind of envisaged it as more tactile and gentle sort of a mutual masturbation, I guess it depends on how much general mobility and sexual function you have.I think libido and desire have everything to do with it, some peoples libido seems to evaporate in their 40's and yet most of us are here because we have powerful libidos, good omens !I would think with the seventies and eighties it's going to be a bit of a lottery. I Know a lot of very active 70/80 year olds, some attend my Aerobics classes, most travel, including my own mum who is leaving today to do the "Rivers of Europe" for 4 weeks. None of these people have dentures, yes mum has had her hips replaced after being a dancer for decades, but i know 40 year olds who have had knee and hip replacements! I have no idea what their sex life is like, but if they can manage to travel, look after Grandkids, attend Aqua Aerobics, drive all over the country side, go to dinners and shows etc, im show they can manage more private activities too!!I think OP you need to spend some time with older people, they are not all in homes once they hit 70!!

I believe when we would see sex as a great healer for out body and soul we would have it prescribed by the Doctors. I think we would feel much better......think of it. U go to the doctor and he/ she says, the first week there is sex 7 days a week, should you feel still sick after that take the pills three times a day.I know it sounds silly when I write it, but I think we have not enough healthy sex.What keeps us young in Body and mind......say it SEX.Just a simple three letter word SEX and it has magical qualities.Cheers

As someone who has had two hip replacements (the last one 7 weeks ago) I can tell you there is still life in the old girl yet! I believe in Quality of Life and support it also.As I age I would like full support in that area from family/friends/careers to enhance my sexual needs in any possible way as that is part of my health and well being.If I want sex at 70/80/90's let me bloody well have it! yes, while the ol' aches and pains creep up, and us guys have that 'man' problem (nothing viagra cant fix), i think you would just learn to compensate, which would make it more fun.If all your teeth all out now a days, you havent had good oral hygiene or u are REALLY messed up on drugs.i have tried the viagra thing a time or two and have to be careful with it, as I turn around and knock lamps over:)

Clever and a bit of fun. I had a good giggle! The sad part is its usually mind or body that goes one before the other. So you get crazy (literally) elderly groping the help, or in a moment of dementia think they are back in the day with a sexy woman...whoops that's the nurse! Or those poor buggers whose bodies haven't made it to the finish line and with mental health in tact they must endure. But given your knowledge of old people's homes I suppose you've seen plenty of that? I like the idea that old people make love instead of fuck. When I was 18, 30yr olds seemed ancient. Not sure if you are aware of this but the average age of hip replacements is now 63. I, the female, have now had both hips done and I am still in my 50's!!! it has a lot to do with how active you are as to when you wear them out. No one would know the difference apart from a few scars, and i really think you need to retract a lot of what you have said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This thread is very interesting...and very relevant to some things I've been thinking about lately. I study occupational therapy, and the head of the OT school at my uni is actually also a qualified sex therapist, with that being his research area of interest. Sexual activity being an important human occupation, OTs are theoretically supposed to be able to help people overcome barriers to and realise their sexual potential in safe and appropriate ways, but I think in practice - as is so often the case - either the therapists and / or the clients are too embarrassed to discuss these things in much detail. And certainly while you're studying at uni there isn't much emphasis placed on learning about sex and how to help people have it. I see so much potential there though, for OTs to help people maintain, restore, and achieve satisfying sex lives, by overcoming perceived and actual barriers of disability, illness, ageing etc. And in regards to this topic, OTs working in retirement facilities could play an active role in proving education about and facilitating healthy sexual expression among residents. Of course this is far from reality at the moment due to various reasons, some reasonable and some not so reasonable, but the area of sex therapy in general is one I'm keeping in my mind as a possible, very interesting future area of research / work.

I had huge fun reading the thread and I am nearly 5 years older than I was when this thread first came out! It's all the more relevant now than it was then. Sex makes people feel good, it should be encouraged as long as possible. Anyone reading the forums over a period of time should be able to see a variety of posts by people explaining how lack of sex effects their quality of life, for the better and worse. I honestly think that when the well dries up and the tap is turned off (or is turned off for me), I will just give it all up. I'm not talking about libido (or whatever you want to call it) there, talking about simply getting no more interest from anyone. I will simply erase sex from my mind. I went through a drought lasting 7 years when I was in my twenties, I just tired of fretting about it so just did not think about sex anymore. And then of course the drought ended. What you find when you're not actually looking for it, eh?
