Hookup is for sex, a date may not even involve sex.

Hookup = like a wombat, eats roots and leaves. No emotional attached or strings involved. Normally no dating involved.
Date: = mutual arrangement enjoying each other's company with an emotional attachment over time, with the intentions of getting to know each other. Doesn't always have to involve sex.
