Cultural Perspectives on Nakedness, Sex and Sexuality.

October 13 2013

It will be hard not to generalise in this thread, for nothing applies to a whole population, but would love to hear your own personal perspectives on how cultures differ in their views, lifestyles, their permissiveness, liberalness (if that's a word), culture & customs regarding the naked body, sex and sexuality. Travel stories welcome, cultural comparisons, & your own personal insights if you are from another culture.

to be naked in public places is not such a big deal. You will find people stripping of and sun baking on the rivers, or the swimming pool. Going into the sauna means you can choose between men/ women or mixed, and all are naked no bathers to cover your body, yes you have towel to sit on.Newspapers show half naked women, Playboy Magazine and the likes are openly advertised in the Newsagents.High schools and restaurant toilets have condom machines present, so it is easy to buy some.Gays can marry and prostitutes have rights.I am living in Australia now since 25 Years and most of these was in place except the last two.

I go to Bali I visit a village in the North. The older women there are usually bare breasted...not the younger women though...Unlike the rest of Indonesia Bali is Hindu not Muslim, this makes a huge difference to how nakedness is viewed but if Westerners wander about topless or naked in resorts, it is definitely frowned upon and you could find yourself in trouble with the law.

Australia is overall very conservative. Definitely different to Europe. Another interesting point, which is a little off the point sorry OP, a Dutch friend of mine mentioned that for country that is so family orientated we are actually very backward in our laws and workplace practices when it comes to accommodating families.

Australia is conservative compared to other cultures yes and maybe I am a prude but I like it like that! Personally I do not want to see women's or men's jiggly bits on display while I select my frozen goods in the supermarket. Similarly I don't want my jiggly bits on public display either. There is such a thing as leaving something to the imagination. When you get given a gift half the fun is unwrapping that gift, if it is not wrapped then it is an anticlimax really.- Posted from rhpmobile

I have travelled a fair bit.. lived in india for 2 years.. very very very conservative there lol and the blokes are extremely misogynistic.. As a culture I found them to generally be very closed minded towards sex and nudity.. that was in 91,92 and 93 ..hopefully its changed abit there . Not to sure since they have one of the highest rates of rape and sexual assault in the world. I also spent a lot of time in the Philippines.. To me it seems like they put on a show of being chaste and proper ,but as soon as they get a chance they really love to fuck ..The amount of sex including orgies, 3somes etc I got upto over there far out did anything I experienced over here in aust. .. I met a lot of women that seemed fairly educated and church going kind of folk, but as I got to know them I discovered they did porn for trikepatrol or were atleast very open to all kinds of sex.. I think as a people there really tired of the catholic church and there corruption and control and all the other bullshit they get upto .. maybe they want to break free lol Also we love nudity and kind of wish people were more open about nudity..we were born naked and we die naked whats the big deal?? I don't want to imagine someone nude I want to see it lol

When you travel overseas. But when does that conflict with your own personal beliefs. We have a freedom here that allows us as a group of people to openly express ourselves. Tolerance of others is something that is vehemently defended. Diversity of sexual orientation is sadly something that not all world leaders share. Yes I refer to Russia.   Should I ever vist that country I would not respect their laws and make a stance. Holding hands with my girlfriend is not a prisonable offence.

I agree it is nice not to have smutty magazines in open display. But in Europe it is good that nakedness and being naked is a natural state and that they are more open about sex. It's isn't something that is hidden away. Northern Europeans are so practical... Unlike some of the south. :P I remember as a child being in Italy and watching a game show where the aim of the game was to get naked. The contestant who was naked first won. The guy in the show was some sleazy old guy, or maybe that was a child's view?, and he was always surrounded by gorgeous topless women. I find it quite bizarre for such a religious country. The Italian psyche is certainly an interesting one.

The good old US of covering up A!   I travelled quite extensively in my former career and my rule was to try to adhere to the local customs, no matter what country I was in.   But then I got posted to southern Ohio in the USA, right on the edge of the famed bible belt. Some of the more stranger things I saw:   - BY LAW, the waitresses at Hooters had to wear bra and pantyhose under their shorts and tee-shirts. If they didn't, the waitress and own of the restaurant were fined heavily.   - The three strip clubs in Dayton, the girls could only strip down to g string and had to wear pasties. All three were regularly raided/inspected by the local police.   - There was a proposition (kind of vote) to ban women wearing string bikinis and men wearing speedo type bathers at the public pools - too much was being revealed.   The majority of beaches we visited in the country, a woman going topless would be arrested and carted off in handcuffs, saw it happen at least a half a dozen times and in nearly every instance, the woman was a foreigner.   Hell they still have counties there that are dry - no alcohol is allowed to be sold or consumed within it's boundaries. Oh sad is that   It is a truly strange country in regards to sex and nudity ....   Mooka

Nakedness. Most Aussies can't deal with it. Can I pigeon hole most 'westerners' here? I was brought up by nudists and was regularly live modelling as a teen. I'm nearly 50 and some peers are still horrified by the concept I can be naked in a room full of strangers. And that's with no arousal.   Sex. I've lived in Germany, travelled India and that's just responding to above posts. Every country has different sexual taboo's and liberties. Sure, everyone gets their kit off in Deutschland, and no girl should get on a bus in India alone, EVER. There is nothing to compare every extremity. No point trying.   Sensuality. My thoughts here are 'we are all individuals'. We could live in a sex positive space, but unless we are comfortable within ourselves we can't be free. You could live in a ultra conservative society, but have enough self love to grow.

Maybe there is a sexual elite in every culture lol? A percentage of the human race that has propelled our species into dominance by pure reproductive numbers? Apostles and disciples of the Roman God of Love or members of a dynamic African tribe? Equally the bell curve would illuminate a percentage that were asexual or close to it. A species wouldn't survive and prosper if it didnt enjoy procreation? Maybe sexuality is so hard wired that suppressing it and squeezing it only makes it pop out in another culture like a balloon filled with water? If you get a chance, watch Christopher Ryan's Big Ideas lecture (So interesting). Man Explorateur.

Thanks for your posts everyone. I didn't have time to write one when I posted, but here goes.   While I was in Germany, I went to what could be described as a naked fun park, it was huge, family oriented, with a smaller section for adults where you could lounge around, receive massages etc.   One part resembled a holiday park with heaps of open space, banana lounges under shady trees, picnic & BBQ facilities, volley ball courts ( use a bit of visual imagery here for a laugh ), and more. Lots of people chilling, some active playing sports, frisbee etc.   Another part was full of different sized & themed pool areas, waterfalls, fountains, outdoor spas of different temperatures, & foot spas. Some were large and open, some were smaller and offered a bit more privacy & seclusion for relaxing. In this area was a sauna facility with various rooms offering different styles of sauna, one dry & hot, a few of varying temperatures, one ultra humid & ultra hot, and one with aromatic oils or herbs filling the air.   The adult part was enclosed & very chilled. Banana lounges, sunrooms, reading rooms filled with large bookshelves. I think there were a few health practitioners that you could do consultations with there, but I was drawn to a massive round raised platform in the centre of a large circular room with Roman columns & high ceilings. It was about 6m in diameter, wonderfully tiled with a radial geometric mosaic, & heated from within, and there were bodies literally baking themselves on top of it while waiting for their turn of a wide variety of massage styles offered in the curtained alcoves surrounding the raised pedestal. I am a sucker for trying something new, so I had a Turkish style full body skin exfoliating where I lay on a warm marble bench and, using a material a lot softer but similar in weave to hessian, there was a mountain of foam created as I had the top layer of skin gently scrubbed and invigorated. I was appropriately draped for modesty when lying on my back.   The vibe throughout the whole place was one of openness. People openly looked at other peoples bodies in passing, but there was no staring, gazing or voyeurism associated with it at all. There was no sexual charge or vibe to the place, just naked people doing what other people would be doing with their clothes on, au naturale.
