Cross feeding, wet nursing & breast milk for cancer patients

April 25 2014

My ISP is down so doing this by phone, eek! Just watched a great show on breastfeeding. I recall the ex was horrified when my mate was still breastfeeding at 2 and he was horrified by how abnormal that was, by the time we became patents he admitted how close minded his old attitude was. Fast forward and I would still be an advocate of cross feeding and wet nursing. WHO (world health org) has stepped down the average weaning age from 7 to 4 1/2. Why do we treat such a natural phenomenon as a gift that can't be shared? And how cool is it that cancer patients show amazing recuperative powers being fed breastmilk? Would you cross feed or wet nurse? I certainly would. In fact I have... - Posted from rhpmobile

I breast fed many babies that weren't my own. I've donated extra milk to the hospital and I wish I had known previously about cancer patients being fed breast milk! I would have helped them too - Posted from rhpmobile

Forgive me for my ignorance but i believe crossfeeding is where one woman breast feeds another womans baby ??? I do believe some populations and tribes or communities in other countries and ours do so ! But i was only talking to a lady not long ago when this lady had a newborn and as a newborn does gets passed around a bit like the new toy anyway at my friends horror as her little one was being held by a lady this lady seemed to take a liking to the newborn and without a care started to whip out a tit and try to suckle my friends baby !!! I dont think that would be appropriate do you ??? She did not think it was and i tend to agree. - Posted from rhpmobile

Completely inappropriate. She should have asked if she didn't know the mother. The other woman obviously felt comfortable and must have done it regularly with her friends and didn't even think about it. That's why I asked the question, there seems to be two categories of people, you are either for it, thinks it's just natural or hate the idea of another woman having that kind of intimacy with your child. And then there are people like my sister in law who refused to breastfeed her kids, wouldn't even give them the colostrum as the fact of a kid on her tit freaked her out. I still don't get people who are offended by breastfeeding in public. I whipped mine out wherever I was and point blank refused to feed my kids in public toilets. Good on you fitzy - did you cross feed or by milk donation?

Was premature... Twenty-nine years ago...she was in hospital without me for four weeks.I went to the hospital twice a day to feed her but I wasn't allowed to stay.....it was very difficult to breast feed her and the nursing staff made me feel an utter failure....another woman feeding her was just not an option given to me...I am glad times have changed xx Q

Quoting 'Highpriority' Q... Biggest hugs xo Other than that my only contribution is that breast milk tastes awful... Hp xo💋 Because you're worth it... Maybe thats why its for babies?............ Breastfeeding.......amazing....an amazing connection between mother and child. I had issues with my first born and even after suffering for several weeks I had to give in and give the bottle....with my second well everything was different there and fed till babe was two. Many people thought that was too long and often told me I should stop. Well I did what was best for me and my baby and not anyone else. I cant fathom people who are shocked at feeding in public.......the only place I would never breastfeed is in a male prison.

Quoting 'Cest_la_viebaby' I cant fathom people who are shocked at feeding in public.......the only place I would never breastfeed is in a male prison. Love it! I might draw the line there too. And to you dear Q, so sad today's options weren't available to you, and pooh to the staff who made you feel that way. You would think they would have had more empathy. Cest, why do people feel the need to tell you when to stop feeding your child? I'll never understand that. I'm jealous, my baby self weaned at 10 months and I was devastated.

visiting the hospital and seeing my mum with her with a breast pump on one side and my baby sister on the other, she had so much milk that she would express for other babies in the ward.... I always thought that's what all mothers did :). When I lived in the US one of our friends breast fed her child until 5, she was saying her friends when they had to run around and couldn't take the baby, they would all take turns caring for the children and this included feeding them...

Funny Coriander (yes I dont mind corriander in small quantities) why they tell people to stop because they can tolerate an infant but as the child grows they think come on they can feed themselves. It was a double edged sword stopping ......... that child and I were always close. Oh and I actually did have to visist a prison whilst breastfeeding and poor bub would not take that bottle..........I have visited a few prisoners over the years .............more fools than hardened criminals.

When my baby finally came home after a month, the visiting nurse told me to drink STOUT,to help with my milk....didn't help with milk and it had a disgusting taste, tried it once...I now know what ill informed advice that was! ..When I took my baby to the Baby Health Centre ,I went with a friend who also had a premature baby...the same nurse had a few students there and when we arrived she exclaimed"'Oh look, here come the little premmie babies, you can tell they're premmie by the shape of their heads!"....but that was nearly thirty years ago and I am sure there is much more enlightened support for new mums now xx Q
