Communication with our fingers only

February 11 2010

Can we rely on communication with our fingers only ??? and no I am not talkin about feeling one up or flippin the bird. Although that is a great way to communicate. I am asking about the internet. How important is the eye contact, facial reactions and body language??? Stalky. Bare with me. People (I included) communicating in this form dont seem to consider the way other people will process information and produce a response. A tongue in cheek comment can cause a drastic over reaction/under reaction, cause we dont have the ability to see for-mentioned tongue in the cheek in the first place. I see the youth struggling every day, to look at you in the eye when you hold a conversation with them. Is this the future??? Thoughts?? Where has the love gone.. Cheers and happy fishin HesheWA

I have always been a face to face person..Starts on the phone to get a feel for the person ..i.e. does she laugh at my jokes..then if the phone call is good ,the face to face is the next step..umm and then if that is good ..breakfast !! you are so right though about a tongue in cheek comment via the keyboard..I guess the keyboard in the instance is the ice breaker.

Cheers Taipan. So I guess we communicate with all senses. Be it phone, we listen. Be it close range, we touch etc. I just hope this is not a reflection of the way we are headed. Dont get me wrong. We have had a great start to our RHP journey and the keyboard has been the key. But as a society are we becoming detached from the emotion of it all? So if you have any opinions I would love to hear. Just want to know what fellow RHPer's thoughts are. Cheers HesheWA xxx

hesheWA I agree completely. I can say things in a string of facial expressions that I could never say in words... because it's mostly a subconscious espression of emotions.   Communicating face to face is so much easier than this. And this form of communicating gets us into trouble as you've indicated... but at the same time this is fast (absent the moderator) and far reaching.   That little stroke of my arm as you speak... the gentle hints... the absence of the arm stroking the next time we meet... so many of our actions and expressions betray our feelings... no matter what is said. Nobody can see the tears dripping down her face as she types her comments here. You can say things in writing you could never say while the words choke in your throat with the pain of it. This means of communication is very limited.   You have to have reasonable literacy skills for starters and that is not always achievable. People who are very confident socially can be very uncomfortable in this environment and vice versa... and in the pitch dark.... naked strangers can meet and communicate their intentions without saying one word... we can communicate very clearly with our fingers. There's an entire  language based on communicating by signing, its very common.   Hugs Stalky

You can learn a lot about a person just sitting in their garden, following them around in their car, checking out where they shop and going through their garbage.    I call it recon - my girlfriend (well - sorta girlfriend, she doesn't know that much about me, just my name from the court papers), well she calls it creepy, the police meet me halfway and call it stalking.   But you're all right - I've learnt heaps more out and about than you do on here.... except for Stalky's gems...  they are lessons that don't always need a face for.
