I would have been a republican through and through. But I quite like them now. Harry and Wills seem like such nice young men, and Charles seems to have let his hair down now, perhaps that's what true love does for you? Camilla is like a breath of fresh air with her down to earthiness. I think the goings on of the last twenty years - Di and Fergie bringing embarrassment and scandals left and right have really taught them to loosen up. Lol, glad you said it, because I too see Harry, and EVERY time I can't help but think he looks sooo much like that Major James Hewitt ( hope I got that right?!) but then again, Di's brother has sandy reddish hair. But even his features resemble THE OTHER BLOKE. Lol.

I would prefer to have them...than Julia.. lol. Anachronistic.. mm I see them more as 'stable' .. like the latin language, perhaps out of date but classic and unchanging. Imagine if we had to change our 'coin' everytime a new leader got in.. costly and a rather major pain in the bum, and oh, the faces of our modern day politicians.. nah.. give me 'old horse face' any day.. lol

I think it is good for the people to have a head of state, a figure that is non-political and popular with the nation. Australia was colonised by the British in 1778, so there are strong historical ties with Great Britain. Australia was the alternative land for a new British colony as they lost the American Revolutionary War of 1775-1783. The British chose convict labour over slavery. We have it pretty good, the Monarchy does not really cost Australians that much, only the occassional royal visit (which is good for business) and a Governor General in office. Anyway, support for a republic seems to be at an all time low. A Morgan poll taken in October 2011 found that support for constitutional change is at its lowest for 20 years. Of those surveyed 34% were pro-republic as opposed to 55% pro-monarchist, preferring to maintain the current constitutional arrangements. Gillard has stated that she would like to see Australia become a republic, with an appropriate time being when there is a change in monarch. Abbott is more pro monarchy. So if there is no monarchy, would you have us look to El Presidente Gillard? Thankyou, but I think not

I see absolutely no benefit in changing the system we have.It would however cost a bomb to change it,and frankly Australia is living well beyond it's meansas it is.Cheers Felonious

I don't want to get into a debate about which side to be on....but i look at it in a different way. We're not a heavy weight country in the world with only 23 million people. Geographically we have over 100 million muslims living just above our head. The past shows that PNG is the only breathing space we have between certain countries wanting to invade. Countries all over the world have some kind of identity with a royal family/constitution/parlimentary system etc. We need all the help and connections we can get to advance and stay safe. I like to use the big brother, little brother comparison. We are the little brother that is lucky to have a big brother as insurance. America is a good allie to have but don't rely on them to save us if we need help....and New Zealand only has one friggit as a navy. Its like a 15 year old thinking they don't need their parents support anymore and wanting to go it alone....only to be in dire straits 1 week down the track and wanting to move back home again. I prefer them but my angle is not so much about do you like the royal family.....but rather if there is nothing to gain by change except disconnection of support from a bigger player...then why the hell do it.

I'm still steamed at Howard for sabotaging the last republican vote. Rather than put it to a vote for people to decide 'Monarchy or Republic' he deliberately saw to it that we would vote on either status quo or a mangled model of what a republic could be. It as dirty politics. Contrivance and manipulation. Slimey little bastard. Fuck him! Damn it, Freya. See what happens to me when we discuss politics? As for Gillard as our head of state, do you really believe she will remain after the next election? Even if she does scrape through because the opposition is as corrupt and self serving as her, it would still be temporary. I hate the thought of Queen Camilla of Australia. Vote Tuscan Red for President!!!

Yeah we got that whole Repulican/ Royalty shite sorted out approx 200 old years ago..fought a war over the whole issue and won - so there ...neh !!! And its worked for us.... (ok kinda, sorta) Having said that when the Queen came to Perth last year for CHOGM ( and I bet she was duly impressed withthe major road works STILL happening on the Great Eastern, the major highway leading in and out of Perth Airport that have been going on since the AGE of MAN - Perth Joke) well I just happened to be in the rite place (read on Brearley Ave stuck in said roadworks ) at the rite time and I was chuffed when the whole motorcade slowed down and we exchanged a look, a smile and a wave....I waved back frantically like a true royalist geek.... My only brush with fame...................ok must admit Im related to someone famous..another story But royalty ...as a Autralian now by default my opinion is they are probably not as relevant here anymore However I still think they are relevant in Britain..if crowds and support for the recent Jubilee are any indication. ..the whole concept provides a wonderful economic boost for Britian..and the whole royalty connection provides alot of work for a lot of people..important in these uncertain economic times Remember if you take something away...be careful what you replace it with.. LOL nice post - hard trucking !!!

But even his features resemble THE OTHER BLOKE. Lol. Yes, my view on being a republican have changed too. Harry and William seem like great guys and I love how Harry gets himself into incredible situations with his antics. I think that in most families one does wonder who's loins the ginger has sprung from and the poor ginger seems to always have a suspect siring. BTW, the gene for red hair is recessive. It has to be inherited from both parents. I would have thought that these days a genetic test for a royal would be the norm. Camilla is not my cup of (English Breakfast) Tea, though she is a good match for Charles.

However...I would do Kate, Pippa or both in the middle of the MCG and give a rats arse if a crowd gathered to watch. I'd be the guy jumping up and down yelling 'yes..yes...yes' and air punching my way out of the stadium. Coins should have those two ladies heads and tails on each side, we could ditch any small change and all paper money should have 3D holographic images of those two showing off their best in appropriate denominations. As for Camilla and Julia, she might not have courtesied to the Queen Mother but somehow I think one or both made up for it spending time on their knees with each other. No real man would do either one of them. We could save a boatload of money spent on the Royal Useless and spend it toward things we need. That is, after the ceremonial kiss off at the MCG with Kate and Pippa.
