Burnt Porridge !

May 14 2010

Do you ever get frustrated when life seems to be going okay than wham or bam it hits you for six, you fall on your face and you think, "what the fuck happened" ? Yesterday was going okay.... I took my daughter to school (on time) AND made it to the gym for 9.15am. I made it to my daughter's swimming class with her school then went home for some lunch and to do some work from home. Then it hit.... my mood dropped and I lost all motivation for everything. All my great plans went out the window. I just couldn't be bothered with anything. I decided I'd go to bed early for change. I told a friend I'd aim for 10pm (I'm usually a 1.30am bedtime)... but the hours just drifted by.... it was soon 12.30am. I'd done nothing. I had a sleepless night after my daughter jumped into bed (she grinds her teeth). This morning I aimed to start all over (a new day blah blah blah). I did the dishes from the past few days, got little Miss ready for school, made her lunch etc but somehow couldn't get myself going. I put on my coat and took Little Miss to school in my PYJAMAS ! I didn't just drop her off.... I walked her to the office to get a late pass then to her class room. Sure, it was a little chilly with no underwear but I really couldn't care. Got home and decided to start again (take 2). I made my usual porridge. I BURNT it !!!! In my 99 years of life (it feels like that) I have NEVER burnt porridge ! What half English, half Scottish person BURNS PORRIDGE !!! OMG... I'm a disgrace to my heritage ! Take 3.... another saucepan, try again.... I nearly burn it again and it turns out to look like a runny inedible mess. Should I just open a bottle of red and eat the Lindt chocolate in my fridge ? Hugs to everyone who is also have a low day, week, month. Miss Saturn

Put quick oats in bowl, cover with light white milk roughly 2:1 ratio and nuke in microwave for 2 minutes. Remove, stir and replace in microwave and nuke for 1 more minute, rest for 30 seconds then add a little mre milk and some honey... Yummmmm and full of betaglucons or something that keeps your cholesterol down. I used to have a lot of days like that until I changed what I ate and then started burning 2000 more calories a day. Vitamin B Miss S, lots of Berocca will kick you along.

Miss S, Sorry to hear that you are down in the dumps. Yes life is full of ups and downs and somedays you just wonder why it is that we have such lows. The highs you can deal with any day, but the lows are just, well, a bloody nuisance. My suggestion, get a copy of Monty Python's Life of Brian, sit down and have a good laugh and remember to "Always look on the bright side of life' Hugs Lets

Hey Capital, Now that I think about it, you are RIGHT.... porridge IS depression food (that's probably why I was raised on it...post-WWII upbringing) ! So it's not ME, it's the crap I'm eating. Think I'll skip the Cornflakes but I like the idea of some "Snap, Crackle and Pop" so may go for the Rice Bubbles !! xx Saturn

Mrs Rough used to suffer terribly from what the doctor described as seasonal depression. Winter in Victoria sucks the big one! Unfortunately not much you can do about it, unless you feel like coming up to Qld for a little sunshine ;p Woke up this morning to a chilly 18deg, but at least it was sunny, and warmed up to 25 deg hehe

...well, well,it must be that time of month(sorry boys feel free to change stations)... this almost sounds like a post i was thinking of putting on myself today... though i am putting mine down to f@#*ing HORMONES!!... i am a lttle over going to bed horny and having hot sex, then txting mrC all my naughty thoughts during the next day, sending the odd pic..;) ready again for the evenings events,.. only to...BAM! POW!... be totally deflated by, god knows what by the time he is home.. Now every month i try to up all my natural 'this n that' to get me thru the next few days and sometimes it works a treat and other times @#*&%#...well you get the picture..(and no we dont like feeling like this or use it as an excuse to totally bitch at you for a few days boys...its a pain in the neck!!!).. so out comes the wine, n the chocolate, and i know the kids see me eating it at breakfast,.. but i really couldnt care less at this point... and stay tuned to this station cause if the Dockers dont win tonight i can not take responsibility for what may happen... so i am sure you are not alone...now where is my wine glass... xx msC xx

...just want to point out that i only have the chocolate at breakfast and not the wine...(thats for after drop off at school)...and i totally agree about the choice of breakfast, in fact dont even go home, go to a cosy coffee shop for pancakes, eggs benedict, and yummy coffee, or hot chocolate,(pref hot waiters also).. then go home n start again, and if this doesnt help theres always tomorrow....and dont forget to dose up on the remedies for next month..... msC xx

Sure hope you've picked up. Mmmmm porridge... comfort food and good for this weather ;-) But I admit I like to use the micro/instant variety... n proper porridge is special. Good ol rice bubbles, I love to add sliced banana to replace sugar. Whatever, there are times that breaking out the wine n choc is the only way to go. Hugs xox Lol Roxxy, there is a recognised condition called S.A.D. - Seasonal Affective Disorder off the top of my head. It's because there is less sunshine from what I hear. Oh look and there I see Mr Rough has mentioned it. Me, I've been sleeping more soundly since the weather got cooler, I think it's that I like to tuck the blankets up around my ears. Yummm n Jose... yes please, hot and tasty... perhaps a light grate of a tasty cheddar Hugs... Mrs P' :-*

Aye aye, we all been thru that. It happens to a lot of people esp in winter times, also known as SAD - seasonal affective disorder. Unfortunately I got it too and my solution is to exercise like crazy (it produces the feel-good hormone that can balance things out), eat really well, breaks the mundane routine wherever I can, keep myself really active outdoor. The more I am indoor, the worse I feel. And of course, I fly out of Sydney once a month to the tropics so that helps a great deal. The good news is its cyclical, it comes and it goes. So even it u feel really down, trust that it'll go away IA. Info as follows... _____________________________ Seasonal Affective Disorder is a depression that many people experience during the winter months, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. Often referred to as seasonal depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder was discovered in the early eighties by the National Institute of Health in the US. Seasonal Affective Disorder causes you to feel down, gloomy, and lose energy. You may have difficulty concentrating and feeling alert, withdraw socially and have carbohydrate cravings. Seasonal Affective Disorder sufferers also experience sleep problems. In Australia it is still estimated that 1 in 300 Australians experience SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder vs. Winter Blues Although often confused with the ‘winter blues,’ Seasonal Affective Disorder and Winter Blues are not the same. Seasonal Affective Disorder is manifested by symptoms of clinical depression, with impaired social interaction and cognitive ability. On the other hand, Winter Blues is milder than SAD and is typified by the lack of energy and feeling sad or down. If you have the winter blues, you can still function. If you have Seasonal Affective Disorder, normal daily functions are difficult to perform. Although Seasonal Affective Disorder and Winter Blues differ in the degree of severity, the treatment is the same for both conditions. What causes Seasonal Affective Disorder? Researchers agree that the lack of sunlight in Autumn and winter causes the effects of seasonal depression. Without sunlight, the brain doesn't produce enough serotonin, which results in the symptoms of depression. The darker days also signal the brain to overproduce the hibernation hormone, melatonin. The symptoms diminish as the days get longer, although many Seasonal Affective Disorder sufferers note brief (1-2 week) periods of SAD-like symptoms in the summer. Symtoms often include fatigue, weight gain, sleep problems such as insomnia and hypersomnia, mood swings, introversion and food cravings. The problem many doctors have in diagnosing SAD is the symptoms overlap with many sleep disorders and other forms of depression.

Ms S...it just sounds like "one of those days" when it may just be best to have a rather large dog and be sure to kick (gently, please!) the end that does not have teeth lest you find out just how ugly "man's best friend" can really be when provoked. At least you managed to bring the water to a full boil before burning anything? | Chasing midnight is not just a name...it's a lifestyle and I think anything over 4 hours of sleep on any given weekday is a bonus! We all have those days...but I try to laugh a bit as I walk out the door (dressed, not in my PJs...a suit is part of my lifestyle during the week as well) at about 7:15 a.m. heading for the city thinking that, with the way the day started...everything and anything else is going to be a lot better. Usually that works, and if not...I am already in a foul mood anyway! ? Carpe dium ... life is too short to take seriously!

Thanks everyone. Nice to here your words of encouragement. I enjoy the slow cook porridge because it's lower G.I and more healthy (the quicker it is the more processed/refined the grains). the weekend has finished in anothe low low low.... I can't cope with the low lows..... don't know what the answer is. Tonight it's red wine and cheezels. And YES, I do experience the Winter Blues. I usually go north or overseas for as long as possible but this year there's no escape due to finances (except for 5 days on the Gold Coast) in late June. I want to curl up in a ball. Hugs, Miss Saturn

It's 7am on a Saturday and you just woke up to a morning where it's 8 degrees outside. Do you: a) Pull the doonah up and sty there until midday then sook all afternoon you got nothing done b) Wake the person next to you and have sex gving you enough endorphins to get up and get at it c) Leap out of bed, put your runners on and exercise, feel the air burn fresh in your lungs and get high on exercise endorphins It's 7am on a Saturday, you just woke up and are hungry. Do you: a) Eat plain porridge and be indifferent about it b) Eat something yummy with 2000 calories per 100 gram and regret it later on the scales (been there) c) Make some porridge with a handful of sultanas, top it with skim milk, sliced banana and honey, eat it thinking how good it tastes getting the benefits of the Beta Glucans and go for a jog instead of the walk you planned We all have our good days and bad days but in the end the only person that affects us is us! I don't have bad days anymore, I have good days and great days, if something doesn't go my way I change it, if I can't change it I leave it be. The days I exercise hardest, work hardest, love hardest and live hardest are the days I don't feel like it, those are the days that I benefit most from pushing myself. Don't be cheated out of a good day by negative thoughts or emotions, win back every day for you, your entitled to it.
