Are other social networking sites psychic...?

October 17 2011

sex

OK. I am officially freaked out! On one of the popular "vanilla" social networking sites is a section called "people you may know". A few months ago a person popped up who I am friends with on this site, but who has no common friends with me on the other site. Now, tonight, a SECOND person has popped up in that section, who I am not even friends with on here (as I don't think she is on here) .... but who I have met at play parties! Again, with no common friends. Just a seemingly random person floating around on a social networking site, that I just happened to have played with! WTF??? How does that site know that I have had sex with these people? Is it psychic? Is it a conspiracy? Am I being monitored by aliens? Has anyone had this happen to them? Does anyone have a more plausible explanation? Help! Mrs Wilko

Some of the other social sites will find emails in your address book.... & will then go off and find your friends. Are you sure you don't have their email addresses stored somewhere? If you don't, well then I give up... the bloody thing is stalking you!!xxMeeka

I am with Meeka on the email thing, I am not too sure how it does it but i had one suggested 'person i might know' who i chatted to ONCE on msn pop up and i get all sorts of random ones based on where i live now and where i have lived in the past, how that works is it just looks at the info you put in and then puts anyone else that has been there on the list of 'people you might know' so maybe you live in a similar area to the person/s suggested???? It is a little scary just how much of our information is out there and how easy it is to make links to people and the websites they are on. We used to be very concerned about people knowing we were on here (obviously those concerns are valid) but now we figure oh well, it is all out there anyway so if someone finds out and has an issue with what we are doing then it is THEIR issue not ours.Welcome to the cyber century where everything about you is being watched, linked and followed (they are all watching us it is a conspiracy, HIDE!!!) lolMrs

Computers and even ones that run websites only do what they've been programmed to do. If you're noticing friend recommendations or other targeted advertising between sites you visit, it's because data is being exchanged between those sites or those sites are using something like shared cookies that stay on your computer until you remove them. I doubt I can link to it directly but you might be interested in this story - search for "facebook violate wiretap" You're not the only one to notice the creepiness of the social networking landscape and some are suing over it.

its actually pretty dodgy. it happened to me before i found out how fb pays for their website.Fb is only free because it 'sells' us as products, meaning, they send out information to other companies about us. so whatever you post on fb, is not private. iv bn contemplating deleting it because there are people i am not friends with but if they are subscribed to my posts they can see my status??!!! iv decided to tweet because if you make your account private, its private. and theres only a limited amount of info you provide them as well.

Data mining is deep and computers can do lots of it very fast. The CIA routinely uses Facebook data. TIME magazine reported that while they were interviewing Zuckerberg, some CIA came into a meeting on friendly terms but with an air of owning the place. We have many patterns subtle enough that we are not aware of them ourselves, and what seems like a short anonymous link in one direction can link up with someone else's short anonymous link in another direction, that's all that's needed for that link to be remembered and used years in the future to provide the context for another link that otherwise wouldn't have been made. It's actually quite shocking, disturbs the hell out of me - but it is real and it exists. It is not coincidence.Gotta go, I have a new friend request on Facebook from Agent Smith - he says we went to school together, hehe!

I'm sure its email addresses too Even people I have long since deleted are popping up on my facebook Including one particular stalker girl in USA     Next thing they are using is facial recognition software So they can track you on various websites that you might have a pic on   And remember... tats are great for identifying bodies... so I'm told

Ok...this is way too technical and a massive stretch for to try and explain but isn' t that the whole thing they were banging on about just recently?I always put it down to emails or other contact details we absent mindedly punch in to our computers on a daily basis.I have noticed this alot on said site...infact I have not only had friend suggestions of other people from this site but also have had the tailored advertisements offer me links to gay and lesbian dating sites etc. xx Salina

... I think you'll find it's because those people have searched you on Facebook, and checked out your profile. Facebook uses that sort of internal information in selecting the People You May Know.I don't know whether a similar explanation would be relevant on the vanilla sites, 'cos I got no experience in them...

Don't forget everything you say or do is kept by f***book and other sites in one giant database. Nothing gets deleted, all your photos remain online. All the while, massive computers are searching through every post you have ever made, every photo you have commented on etc. So all it took is someone that you know, that knows someone else, commented on the same photo that you did and voila, F***book makes the connection and recommends new friends and ads of course. We won't need an Australian census soon as a world wide record of > 800,000,000 people is being collected every second of every day. Also, on top of that you have a thing called a referrer site. Every website running certain scripts can see what site you were on before you went there. So for example I went to F***book, in this same 'tab' or window in my browser, they will have a record of where I have been last. Similar to cookie tracking, but done through your browser.Scary isn't it....

someone on your f=book friends list is also on your msn contacts list i imagine....otherwise its perhaps from tracking cookies. its not f=book doing it, its usually something you have done to yourself...trick is to keep them seperate. we've no one who appears on both so its never appeared to be an issue

Not sure how deep the data mining goes. It certainly seems to pull out contacts from any emails you might have registered, plus it also does the same with people you already have as FB friends. So if any of your friends have also know any of your fuck buddies then they might pop up through that channel too. My FB profile is set to private, so even if you try and search for me I shouldn't be found....and is it also a coincidence that the term fb can relate to both facebook and fuckbuddy??? lol
