Being female is certainly no protective factor for anal cancer, and as dontgothere so eloquently put it, where there's a hole... What is protective is the mass vaccination program of females against HPV with Gardasil, which has certainly caused a reduction in the rates of genital warts and cervical cancer. There are well over 100 different types of HPV, but we know that the ones most likely to cause both cervical and anal cancer are types 16 and 18, both of which are covered for by Gardasil. So in that regard, women vaccinated against cervical cancer will also be somewhat protected from the HPV causes of anal cancer. There was also some talk of extending the vaccination program to men to improve herd immunity, and men have certainly been able to receive the Gardasil vaccine on their request.And, cervical cancer is also well screened for with pap smears, which is effective in early detection. Perhaps those at higher risk of anal cancers (anyone who engages in anal intercourse - male or female, homosexual or heterosexual, those with HIV/AIDS or the immune suppressed) undergo anal swabbing??? Food for thought...

I have often wondered if there could be a correlation between the increase in prostate cancer and the advent of seemingly free range anal sex. and which of the gay guys get rectal cancer...giver or receiver ?? An estimated 5200 new cases were diagnosed in the US in 2009 of which approximately 3000 were women and 2000 were men. Relatively low numbers considering a US population of 350mil and considering 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and similar number of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer There are also other risk factors associated with anal cance, like smoking. HPV has also been linked to an increase risk of throat cancer as a result of oral sex, so following the logic that anal sex puts you at a greater risk of anal cancer then oral sex at the same time would have to be considered a risky practice. I am not so nieve to expect to change anyones mind quite the contaray we think every one should try. Just trying to be helpful here and NOT all preachy , but if people are worried about bowel cancer the most beneficial thing they can do is go is consider their mouth diet , their arse diet is nowhere near as important , bowel cancer amongst vegetarians is at a very very low rate when compared to meat-eaters. But I do thank you for the info , not sure whether it is a very balanced view , as the others have said , but thanks because it shows you give a shit , if you'll excuse the pun ;) I've lost rellies way before their time to bowel cancer too , it really sux arse I know. Also since I know many of you on here are interested in the taste of cum ----vego tastes better because the diet is usually less bitter. Isnt it great when our bodies are treated right, Our GP referred us to Health dept Dieticans at our request to get our BMI down from 31 to hopefully 25. He said 30% exercise which all that is required just to get heart rate up, 70% Diet. The Dietican advised most of those fast weight loss plans, you lose heaps and proceed to put it back on when you go off. She recoomended to us the current Health dept thinking on portion sizes, correct balance of meat, veges and carbohydrades. 2-3 non alchol days a week and only one drink for the other 4-5 days. We both are losing 300 to 600 grams a week nothing majic but sustainable plus we are confident our intake is what our bodies are designed for. I would guess to remove meat you open another set of problems. We dont think its nessary to have organic, vitamin pills, Hours at the gym to maintain good health. Better go do the Bowell cancer home test kit test now that the Australian government sends to every person over 50, big expense to us all if it is such a small problem.

Going veg definitely doesn't open a new set of health problems , the health dept will tell you that ; they now officially have a vegetarian food pyramid that covers ALL the nutrition a person needs for optimum health AND performance. The proof of this is that so many top athletes in the world are currently and historically have been vego , eg Edwin Moses , Karl Lewis , 2 time Mr Universe Bill Pearl , many of the worlds current top triathletes , power lifters and even champion UFC cage-fighters etcetcetc. This myth of vegetarianism being unhealthy has been perpetuated by the meat industry and it's co-industries which are the most powerful , richest and most ruthless businesses in the world. Just look at their history of environmental destruction and mal-treatment of our buddies the animals and then you'll see how they have no ethical problem with manipulating the media and therefore the consumer. I could go on for days , but believe me it's the biggest single way a person can make a massive difference to their own health and also to the environment.

Ok well first things first. The question was about why the study was on men and not women. The answer is because that's what the researchers chose. Secondly, I'm a nursing student and happen to have just finished an assignment on colorectal cancer. Not once did I cone across any suggestion of anal sex and cancer. The vast majority of CRC comes from polyps developing in the colon. And even they can take up to 10-15 years to be noticed as carcinomas. And by then its usually too late. So people please stop talking drivvle. The suggestion of gay men contracting it is because of their lifestyle. Evolutionarily speaking anal sex isn't normal, that's what vaginas are for. We as humans enjoy sex so much because it's functional. It actually serves a purpose. It's pleasurable because it's functional. HIV men are immunocompromised so any damage cause by penetration is going to be bad news. As for vegetables, there is no solid evidence for it preventing CRC. There is actually conflicting evidence but the one vegetable that always come up trumps is cabbage and other leafy greens. Proven tips for prevention of CRC is exercise, a lower hip to waist ratio (not bmi) that's a nothing medical theory. A higher intake of calcium and vitamin D and smoking. I'd suggest that people Have a higher risk because of the the rectal bleeding. It's breaks down the mucosal lining in the lumen and allows infection. Cancer, simply explained is a change in the tissue type. Basically the body doesnt replace fully the dead tissue as it should when it repairs itself. You can have anal sex but take physical precautions and more than anything, exercise, have a balanced diet, lose the fags and don't be so stressed. Take a fuxken holiday now and again. Te single biggest sign of CRC is rectal Bleeding. So do lookafter that. Low fat high fibre diet (sorry it's better having anal than fried chicken) is very important and if you have a family history of cancer and your in your late 40's and older then I do recommend a colonoscopy. Let me give you the big tip on one hell of a lot of medical research and studies - most are company funded - i should know i work for one!every study can be manipulated to get the result you want, one particular study i know of actually selected out patients they know would skew the results.If you really wanted to see if there is an increased rate of bowel cancer in a particular population - have a look at a male jail!One thing that is really worth while pointing out, cancer is an error in the dna coding for cell replication. There are studies to show supposed causal links between all sorts of things, including oral sex and throat cancer in men. Hell, which would I prefer? Leading a dull, boring existence hoping that I don't die of a type of cancer or enjoying the pleasures derived from feeling woman climax during a a sexual encounter? I have several gay friends who all swear blind they are pitchers not catchers. This being the case, all I can determine from that is that there is one gay man with an arsehole the size of the Sydney harbour tunnel who had better be checked for anal cancer... the rest of them should be safe. Okay, I am now very concerned. As a regular chat user on RHP, most people in there would be aware of my ummm slight interest for anal sex..."its better to receive than to give" i always say.Upon reading the above comments i now feel compelled to visit my local GP to ask for an "internal" check up for cancer. Im not only guilty of receiving swollen goods... but the swollen goods ive received on one occasion was a piece of fried chicken> Does this mean im fucked?ok ok i lied.... it was boiled :D
