November 21 2018

Any one on here that are or thinking of travelling either as a couple or a single or who have already traveled and can give some free camp grounds( no pun intended )

I love a good road trip, do a good interstater about once a year and try to camp as much as I can. It all depends on how self-sufficient you are. If you are travelling in a motorhome or towing a caravan which has its own shower and toilet, there are many free camping sites dotted along the highways all through the Territory, South Australia and WA.
When I travel I pack up my ute with my swag and bedding, some basic cooking gear, a 25 litre drum of water, an esky, grog, suitcase with clothing, tools and extra oil, transmission fluid etc.
This allows me to camp wherever I like. I generally like to stay away from others (grey nomads can be particularly irritating with their generators and chit-chat) so I am always on the lookout for old gravel pits which you can spot off the highways with a bit of a keen eye. They are flat, have residual gravel so are not dusty and generally off the road aways so you have privacy.
I am able to camp thus for days at a time, but generally every couple I stop in at a town and get a dinkum campsite at a caravan park or whatever. I can have a proper shower (as opposed to bird baths on road), restock with water and all the rest then keep moving. Boot up some good podcasts - they are excellent for keeping you alert, set the cruise and climate control and head forth. I love my driving holidays.
I am not sure about the East coast - being the most heavily populated areas of Australia they are probably a different kettle of fish, you would probably find far fewer free camping spots. I intend to do one next year covering NSW and VIC but imagine I will be camping in caravan parks and the like a lot of the time. Which means I will have to endure unsolicited mind-numbing ''conversations'' with grey nomads about their ''rigs'' and how many grandchildren they have.

Download an app called WikiCamps. It’s got all the caravan parks and free camping spots all over Australia and all the info you will need. Eg wether there is water, phone service, toilets etc.
