I think people in public positions should be promoting inclusion, not colluding with the bigoted minority who can't cope with a changing world by espousing outdated, limiting beliefs. I like the idea if you can't say something sensible, keep your mouth shut! He should have kept his firmly buttoned! Wild (about discrimination)

I think AKER is more interested in being noticed, especially given his best days of footy are behind him.Not sure what to make of him. Is he a product of the homophobic past or is he restling with his own sexuality.I think he would find that there are a lot more gay and bi men in his team than he realises.I have a relative in the gay scene and he knows of a gay/bi sex club that has its windows blacked out as the footy players that frequent the joint don't want the publicity.

I think he might be a little worried about something other than his foot being in his mouth for once

Here's to you 'thegardener68'....aker only comes out with this shit when hes profile in the media has gone quiet....he just want the lime light again.....obviously still coming to grip with no acholades on the footy field, gotta find it somewhere else......more stupid is the 'media' for falling for hes crap.....so....aker 1 - others 0, we need to ignore him and not give him the hype he wants.....which is back in the limelight.....

I think Acker's is right... football fans will not cope if the man (men) they love to watch running around an oval in tiny shorts and covered in sweatbeads fondling balls is gay. It's because it closes the loop.

Being in NSW, I don't really follow AFL, But Jason is quite obviously a complete and total moron, I had trouble even making sense of what he said, Something about not being able to handle a guy in the dressing room if they were naked, and the guy was gay.....I think Aker needs a good fuck up the ass, to fuck some sence into him....Maybee some of that peroxide has seeped into his Brain ?.......What a Cock Head...lol

What article did you all read?? Not the same one as me, obviously!! Aker does not have a problem with Homosexuality and never has...He was talking about the Football world in general. Look at the swimmers and rugby players and so forth that come out of the closet when they have LEFT their professional sport...all were too afraid to come out while playing at an Elite level as they knew it would not be accepted. Do you really believe that other players and supporters (especially opposition supporters) will accept a player if he is gay? I can confidently say no!! I used to date a top AFL player and I can tell you all first hand...they would be dead in the sport if they did come out!! Aker just spoke the truth!! Oh and btw I am not a Footscray supporter!! xFunlovingx

Unfortunately I have to agree in this circumstance . Pips

Please bear in mind that the majority of (male) football fans read the Herald Sun (Victoria), vote liberal, drink shit beer and generally don't like gay guys. If keeping your sexual preferences to yourself is some kind of self hate crime then I'm guilty of it too. I don't tell everyone about my sexual escapades! Do you really have to wear your sexuality on your sleeve? There's more to you than who you root and I think the best fag is one who is my mate and can drink a beer and doesn't pout or mince about and is generally a normal happy human without feeling the need to declare to the world from the top of a mountain that they like stubbled jaws, sixpacks and a cock in their mouth. If we know them enough we already know that and if you choose not to tell your mum you're a filthy swinger who likes a cock in all three holes at once then that's ok too. I do however agree that maybe one or two guys coming out in the AFL would probably encourage young dudes and chickybabes to be more comfortable with who they are within themselves. But it probably won't happen. These guys want to be known for what they can do on the field, not in the sack.RandomRandom

I also read the article and I didn't detect any obvious homophobic comments made by Jason.I have a gay cousin, my brother in law and his partner are in a same sex relationship and I also have many gay friends who are quite open about their sexual orientation.I don't really follow football, although I do remember when Ian Roberts "came out" many years ago, It was a major media "bombshell".I totally agree with xFunlovingx that in general, some football supporters would use this information to villify those players who chose to "come out". Also, imagine the behaviour of the homophobic team-mates of these players? Sure there are some sports where homosexuality is accepted, but unfortunately in 2010, football in this country still has a long way to go. I interpreted Jason's comments as trying to protect those players who were considering "coming out" Maybe my interpretation was wrong?

I had a quick listen to Acker on the nine website and read his article in the Sun Herald. Firstly I'd like to advise you that all that sweat, smell and mud in a men's locker room can be a turn on for some. People are kinky for strange things at times and the only certainty is that it can be unpredictable. Seems to me Acker is simply saying that paying or pushing people to "come out" is a stupid thing for AFL to do. He says homophobia exists in the clubs and there will be a negative reaction from some players that may not be good for the game. Come out or dont come it... leave it to the player to decide... but dont go gay hunting... Now, I know he isnt the most articulate bloke in the sport.. so he might have confused his message a little .. seems to me.. his message is alright. Come out.. or dont come out but dont make it a witch hunt to find al the gay men in your club. Homosexuality is not a choice, but it ought to be your choice to choose whether or not you want to share your sexual preferences with other people in your workplace. His other comments.. about feeling embarrassed naked in front of a gay man.. well... what he is really saying is that he only feels like that when he knows about it so he would rather not know..... and I guess that's not too mch to ask. A person's sexual preferences are irrelevant to the game... and another blokes bedroom habits .. why would he need to know about it in the workplace? Fair cop I think. I say good luck to him for speaking out. I've gotta be among one of the least homophobic people I know.. and I love perving on me footy players.. but I do not have to know their sexual orientation to enjoy that! Hugs Stalky

Quoting 'randomtip' and if you choose not to tell your mum you're a filthy swinger who likes a cock in all three holes at once then that's ok too. Random But should I tell her anyway? Will she tell dad? Will dad be jealous? You know what he can be like lol. . Well said btw. You are what you eat, not what you root. Hmm - although I like to eat what I'm rooting, which complicates things :-D

There's no dout in my mind that teenagers struggling to understand their sexual urges, preferences and curiosity would have an easier job of it if they saw a community that accepts people regardless of where they stand on the Kinsey scale. Also, If our heroes are "coming out" with it, no doubt that helps young minds feel more comfortable with their own urges and more people would get laid, releasing more dopamines and the whole world would no doubt be a happier place with rainbows everywhere. . . Just between you and me I'd love to live in a community like that. One where nobody felt the urge to make an announcement to the world attesting their sexuality. God forbid should they ever develop a penchant for the opposite sex this week! I mean to say... we do not really need these labels at all to enjoy ourselves sexually. We just need to know that it is ok not to be heterosexual, but the magic man in the sky is really the only obstacle to this humanist utopia. PS Jeano ...about the ... ummm...... don't tell your mum. :p Hugs Stalky

Even if Aker was homophobic, and I don't believe he is, the view he was putting across was his. He wasn't representing a group, not his Club, not the AFL...........he was talking into a microphone, all on his own. I don't know what the prompts were for him to say it. Not sure of the circumstances. However, it's great for the media. Stick a microphone in front of someone, then complain about what they say into it. What a set-up.............what a goose! If anyone should've stayed in the closet, it's Aker with his comments........but he probably couldn't fit in, with the stash of hairdye he keeps in there.

He is entilted to his opinion, he didnt have to say it to the media. Personally to me it doesn't matter either way, but I can understand some being put out being in the dressing and thinking they might try to come onyo them etc..

Dont feel sorry for him in benig attacked. The guy writes a regular column in a newspaper.. which is where this stuff started.. he brought it all on himself... you know.. publish or perish kind of thing.. all publicity is good publicity.. and so on. He's no fool... just playing that game off field. Hugs Stalky

As an ex-journalist, I can tell you that, while Aker may well write a column for a newspaper, he does not have the final say in what is published. The Editor does. At no time have I said I felt sorry for the plonker. I'd also like to say, in response to some postings that, just like hetro men and women, I believe that gay men and women are attracted to certain types of people, in various types of circumstances. We all come into contact with people who share our same sexual persuasion, at work, parties, various places. However, when was the last time I jumped someone at the photocopying maching?? Yes, NEVER!!!! If a footy player is gay and closeted..........or a female netballer, basketballer, whoever, and they're in a situation where they find their team mates naked, they are intelligent and controlled enough to perhaps, admire what they see, without bending it over. In other words, they have standards and are professional. Just because a man may be gay does NOT mean he wants to jump every naked man he sees. Wouldn't it be great if a few guys started to wind Aker up in the showers now? You never know...........he MAY just be the gay footy player he's talking about. Perhaps it's not so much about others at all and is much closer to home.

With all due respect Gordy to your belief that it's a journalists absolute right to get to the truth for the public good... or some such misguided noble cause., it is precisely the kind of speculation that you raise about Aker's sexuality that Acker, rightly in my opinion, objects to. It's none of our damn business what he likes in the cot. If he wants to make an announcement as to his sexual preferences, then surely that's his privilege and not for others to try and coerce him, or anyone else, to force his hand. Your attitude and attitudes like yours turns this situation into a witch hunt, I think. Hugs Stalky

You are asking why he wrote a piece on Gays coming out of the closet in AFL? I will type this slowly for the ones that can't read properly...for a while now there has been a "witch hunt" by some groups of players to "out" the gay ones!! He is stating that this is ridiculous and should be stopped and that it is up to the individual to come out, its not for these immature little shithead players that think they are soooooo manly by doing this!! Nor is it anyone's business. And seriously Gordy for an "ex journalist" (cough cough) you know crap....and to call someone "Gay" that isn't gay?? Well no wonder the real ones don't want to come out......Even this ignorance is just plain stupidity!! xFunlovingx

I didn't actually say that. My response was to your comment above where you said I shouldn't feel sorry for Aker. You said he writes a column and brought it on himself with his comments. What I'm saying is, it's not his decision what is printed. The Editor decides. And you're right........what he does in the cot stays in the cot. Similarly, the gender of who he has in the cot should stay there, too. I'm not witch-hunting anyone. What I said about Aker, was tongue-in-cheek. I'd gladly shower with him to show there are no hard feelings. And if there are hard feelings, don't dare assume we're gay. It's a well known fact that dicks have a mind of their own. Hey, Stalky, I was naked when you hugged me before.............careful mate. lol It's all good, buddy.

OK, Lets pray that one of these fellas does come out so we can see for ourselves what the reaction will be. I fear nobody wants to be the first. What will happen? PUBLIC PERSECUTION ACCEPTANCE RIDICULE RECOGNITION OSTRICISED WELCOMED HARRASSED ON FIELD CONGRATULATIONS These are just a couple of possibilities. Not to suggest that if 1 comes forward the floodgates will open. I believe that more will take up the sport if they are not scared of persecution. More people playing sport of any kind or just being more active is a good thing.

I'm no Aker fan, but I think he did have a reasonable point to make, he wasn't being homophobic, and he's been rather unfairly attacked. What Akermanis was saying was not that he hated gays, or that gays didn't belong in AFL, yada yada, but that any player who came out would be in for a very difficult time of it. Can you imagine, for instance, how the fans of rival clubs would absolutely vilify the first player to come out? Remember the abuse heaped on Nicky Winmar not so long ago, just for his skin colour? The sad truth is, as enlightened as we'd like to think we are, there are some sections of society where coming out, or being outed, is career death. Just ask David Campbell. There may have been good reasons for him quitting, but just going to a gay bar should not have been it - nor should it have been any of our damn business. I may not like Akermanis at all, but I think that, in some degree, he made a fair point.

The AFL won't divulge the drug takers let alone anyone that has sexually assaulted someone....It is only if they are charged do the public find out who the offenders are. I am sure alot of money is exchanged for keeping quiet too. I had problems with a football player years and years ago that tried to grab me from a laneway into his car as I was walking home. Thankfully I was saved by a cyclist riding by at the time. The lengths that that Club went to to keep it all quiet would shock your pants off. Even the Police talked me out of having him charged!! I wonder if people getting caught with drugs can appeal to the Media not to mention their names unless they have been caught 3 times?? Society has all different laws...One for the rich...One for the AFL and One for the rest!! xFunlovingx

Apparently she was at least 16 at the time and sex was consensual. Not very bright on the players behalf but not illegal at that age. As for Akers I am with Stalky, I think he meant well, just worded it rather poorly and has been widely condemned by the media for his comments.

It's not just AFL players that get away with it. There has been plenty of cases of League players doing the same thing and all and sundry do all they can to hush it up. Mind you I can't say I blame him for wanting to grab you. There is always a proper way.

Has it been proven that the footy players are, in fact, guilty, and one of them fathered her baby??? Or was it just another beat-up story that folk loved to hear about? Is it fact.........????
