Most of the inner suburbs have a lively pub/club scene....depends on the niche you're looking for. There are some dives, and some really nice ones. Fitzroy, Collingwood, Prahran, South Yarra, St. Kilda, to name a few. If you can afford it, there's Docklands as well.I moved back to Melbourne last May, after 2 1/2 years in Perth :)

....better than Perth, that's for sure! No option fees, for starters.Rent prices...well, depends what you're after. You can find average rents for various suburbs here:http://localstats.qpzm.com.au/stats/vic/melbourne/Of course, the closer you are to the CBD, the higher the rent for a given property. Best thing to do would be to get on to realestate.com.au and have a look at what's available in the suburbs you're interested in.

Quoting 'missopenminded'I have been hearinf St Kilda and South Yarra ... I suppose I am looking for somewhere lively and where the young people are. What is it like to rent in Melbourne?ha ha I dont blame you for moving back I feel SO DEAD BORED over here and I think I have def outgrown this little village town LOL (you know it's time to go when you have lost your zest to do anything) hahahaha There's plenty of young people in Melton up the road from here.... you know... 16 or 17 with a few kids, a lowered Commodore and a tattooed boyfriend.. Assuming you have class and trendiness on your side, I'd suggest Prahran, South Yarra and St Kilda as 'can't go wrong'. I like Richmond too. If you use those as your 'centres' and then work out how far from them you're happy to live you should be able to find somewhere reasonable to rent...if you're used to WA pricing, then you shouldn't come away too shocked. . I'd avoid the Docklands myself... it's just a quieter, colder place than Perth..

Yep good point Jensta. There's nothing quite like moving away from a major capital city (ok... large village - ie. Perth) and then moving to the other side of the country and setting up house in an outer suburb an hour outside the actual city. Sure - Berwick village is a lovely strip of shops, and I'm sure someone has plonked a nightclub out there but I think you're polishing a turd.... and you know what they say... no matter how much you polish it.....

I'd say live anywhere within about 8kms of the city, ideally to the North, East or South side. To be honest its even better to be within 5kms of the CBD. All of these areas have pubs and clubs within walking distance of home. There's lot sof share houses full of other people your age who want to party every night too, so you have a social life straight away. If you are within 5kms (or ideally, a bit closer) and you work in the city, you can live without a car, which is brilliant. Within that 5km ring the tram network is really good, much further out and you rely on trains (which are OK but overcrowded in rush hour) and buses (which are wierd and after 4 years I have still found them hard to work out.Be warned that there is a Nort h-South divide: The river. Its a nightmare to cross it. If you live south but work north its a nightmare as there are no fast public transport options to cross the river (you end up going into city and out again) and only 2 roads outside of the CBD cross the river, these roads are alwasy congested and slow. Like wise if your mates all live south but you live north you'll not see them very often. If you live North of the river the fun suburbs of the inner north are Brunswick, Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Northcote, Abbotsford. South of the river the fun nightlife lifestyle is based around St Kilda, Prahan and South Yarra.Richmond is close to the river, between the above groups, also a good spot, and there's also Hawthorn to the East which has a good nightlife too.I group these suburbs in the way that I did because there's also a difference in the vibe of the Nort hsuburbs to the South suburbs. There is a change in the characteristics and the vibe of the North compared to the South. The inner south suburbs are wealthier, and closer to other wealthy suburbs, so the people look a bit more moneyed, and you see a lot more guys showing off their convertible sports cars there, part of that is its closer to St Kilda beach, which on a sunny day is poser central. You see a lot of Steroid pumped guys and botoxed women walking around like peacocks, more Ed Hardy and obvious dsiplays of bling. The North by contrast is historically a lot grungier, and was popular with artists and musicians as it was cheaper. Nowadays much of it has been taken over by a new generation of yuppies who want to live near the funky cafes and pubs of live music, so its more expensive than the scruffy buildings would suggest. There's a lot of inverted snobbery, a lot of rejection of fashion brands which leads to you seeing a lot of hipsters wearing some utterly ridiculous outfits or haircuts so that everyone can see they are non-conformist. Further out in the inner north you'll meet more hippies and see more organic food outlets, community gardens and similar.Inner north is more about traditional pubs that have been funked up and made contemporary, south has more neon bars. Richmond is stuck between the two, and has elements of both. South has Revolver, a 24 hour nighclub, which sometimes is brilliant, but sometimes is just plain gross and full of messed up people on bad comedowns.I have given you the worst extremes of both, find out for yourself by having a coffee in the following places: Chapel St (prahan and Sth Yarra), Fitzroy St in St Kilda, then go to Brunswick street (Fitzroy) and Sydney Road (in Brunswick). By doing that you'll find your groove. Enjoy, I moved here from the UK 4 years ago where I had a really good party lifestyle. You only get it in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. So don't live outside the tram network as you just end up getting so many cabs you're better off moving closer. And get a bicycle, its the easiest way to get around.

Some reasonable rents out North Melbourne and Flemington way, handy to the CBD without being in it, some good cafes around Errol Street.
