A thread about remakes of (hit) songs...for better or worse

January 17 2015

Firstly I'll vent my spleen on Wet Wet Wet for murdering Love is all around...the worst remake I've ever heard. But I do love Nico Vega's remake of Bang Bang (My baby shot me down)I also like Santana's Black Magic Woman...a lot but it will never beat the original.

I think that Faith No More's version of Easy like Sunday morning was way better than the original. Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah is another one that springs to mind. I actually love listening to some artists interpretations of other's music, it's why I love the Triple J Live at the Wireless series. There are some real stand out covers done there.

My fav jjj version is Husky playing Inxs' Need you tonight. Theyve slowed it right down and sexified if more. Its foreplay for the ears.

It's quirky and clever, but not really my cup of tea. I really liked Lorde's cover of Retrograde, and Bridges covered by Meg Mac, but then I have a total girl-crush on Meg Mac right now...

(Lover) You Don't Treat Me No Good No More - Chet Faker. Original by Sonia Dada. I also love Birds of Tokyo's like a version of Kendrik Lamar's Swimming pools... unfortunately I've ever been able to find it to (legally) download :/ Great topic, Mr Denials :) Much love, Elle xx

I really liked Lorde's cover of Retrograde, and Bridges covered by Meg Mac, but then I have a total girl-crush on Meg Mac right now... The Lorde cover doesn't do it for me (I do like the James Blake original), but then again I'm not really a fan of Lorde anyway. Other faves for me from LaV are Owl Eyes doing Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks and John Butler Trio doing Pharrell Williams' Happy. Moving away from LaV, two covers I love are both by Pet Shop Boys - Always on my Mind (Elvis Presley) and Where the Streets have no name (U2). Also Placebo doing Running up that Hill (Kate Bush) and Nine Inch Nails doing Hurt (Johnny Cash).

Quoting 'Elle67'Great topic, Mr Denials :) Much love, Elle xx Thankyou Elle, each poster here has brought their bit to it and made the quality it is, thanks for posting...and thanks to Pleasure Purr for inspiring it. I never thought about JJJ like a version when I put up the OP but yes some great stuff has been done there.Robert Plant (& the Sensational Space Shifters) do some truly original takes on other peoples songs. It's a fine line between doing a bland copy and making your own imprint on a song. Then again there's Stairway to Heaven which is one of the most covered songs since White Christmas...

Apocalyptica (four guys who play cello's) cover nothing else matters (Metallica) and Stairway to heaven (Led Zeppelin) they do quite a few heavy rock covers and it puts the songs into a new perspective. Gary Jules - Mad World (Originally REM) i prefer Gary Jules cover more than how REM originally arranged it.

american pie I nearly clawed my eyes out. Prefer johny cash's "hurt", but i could never get into NIN, which is wierd cos i'm pretty eclectic with my music tastes. sometimes covers are great, sometimes they suck balls. But it goes to show that some songs were so good they just keep coming back. As awful as madonna's cover of "american pie" was its a song well worth reintroducing to the young-uns who might otherwise never find out about don's incredible song. Now if someone would do a good cover of "vincent"... Or "moonshadow" (since yusuf doesnt seem to be drawing the young crowd he once did), i'd rest easier knowing the "gimme it now on a silver platter" generation were at least getting some of the good ones reintroduced to them.

Madonna should be slapped with a large wet tuna for her cover of Don Mclean's American Pie.Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP should be beaten savagely with the aforementioned tuna for the remix of Sugar Man.

Johnny Cash and "Hurt" was the first to spring to my mind too…. and such a tragic sound to it, as if it was an epilogue to his career. He did a great cover of U2's "One" as well. Though, I've always liked the Mary J Blige version best of all. Vocally, she pisses on Bono. What a voice! How about Bryan Ferry? He was a master of the cover song. Such as Bob Dylans "Hard rain gonna fall" and others. And Cyndi Laupers "True Colors?" I like the Phil Collins cover just as much as the original, but I'm not as fond of theKasey Chambers one. It's something in her voice….a bit nasally for my taste.

Hi Jack, I came in to post about Neil Diamond and his Hot August Night Concerts. The first one was performed when I was 9 years old and it was a big influence on this impressionable young girl, lol. The 40th Anniversary version, is not the same on CD, LOL. But the DVD reveals things to me in some songs that are repeated in the second performance of them that I was not attentive to in the first concert, which of course is not available as a DVD or video etc. The concert in 1972 has been heard by me on record, cassette, cd, video, and dvd, as well of course, radio and TV. . Sadly, after all these years, I've decided I'm a bit of a slut with remakes. UB40's remake of, 'Red, Red, Wine', is a favourite. . Dolly Parton's, "I will Always Love You" as done by, "Whitney Houston" may she RIP.
